DC Films The DC Studios News and Discussion Thread

Hopefully his two big TV shows will keep Goyer busy and away from DC movies for a while. I wish DC would just learn to quit him, but alas, now they've got him on Sandman. :( I blame Nolan for giving him all that goodwill.

Flyby was a horrible script though. It completely changed the superman mythos beyond recognition. Audiences would have hated it. I KNOW I WOULD! I am excited about Abrams but when I heard about Flyby it made me very concerned. I wish they would just bring back Cavill and give us the MOS sequel we deserve. We made MOS a success despite how unfair the critics were to it. They should have given us a sequel instead of rushing into forming the DCEU and this mishap and/or missteps discussion wouldn't have even been a thing. And btw the sequel would have made even more money.

Eh, I maintain that the final draft of Flyby without the Kryptonian-Fu or Kryptonian Lex would've made for a good movie people could have enjoyed a lot more than MoS. But Krypton still being around as a war torn planet for Superman to go to at the end and the Zod ripoff character were not J.J's choices to include, but Jon Peters' from what I understand. Still, I could've lived with those mythos changes given the other strong points of the script - he had a Clark and Lois with actual personalities and banter, Clark finding his journalism calling in college and I really liked his take on Lex. He got the most important part - the characters - in a way the movies have failed to do over the years, imo.

I can already tell that we disagree on MOS which is the best Superman movie ever made IMHO. It is also in my top 5 best CBMs of all time. I believe it is criminally underrated so I am pretty sure we will not agree on this topic. Also, I like Goyer. I don't blame him for BvS or Justice League. I blame that mostly on Zack(But not Zack alone I think others also had a large hand if not larger on those missteps). BTW I do respect your opinion. The MOS thing just breaks my heart cause I feel it was done so dirty by the critics.

Though it does does certain things with the character that I disagree with, I still like MOS for the most part. It's no masterpiece and I very much prefer the Donner movies, but ultimately I still think of MOS as being a pretty damn good comic book movie.

I'm getting annoyed of seeing Michael B Jordan as Superman rumors again and news about him pitching a movie to WB with him in the role. I know I'm about to get angry quote replies but I want Clark Kent/Superman as is and not suddenly black or whatever else! Minor characters are okay I guess but majorly established characters such as Batman and Superman is just a no no for me.

If Michael B Jordan wants to be a DC superhero then give him Black Lightning, Green Lantern or Steel!

I don't think MBJ's pitch included playing Clark Kent. It would've been Calvin Ellis, I'm guessing.

I agree with not preferring a racebent Supes, but for selfish reasons - unlike some here, I still haven't seen MY Superman in a movie. I didn't like the Reeve version, didn't like the Snyder version. If I had loved one of those, I'd probably be fine with them changing it up, but I still haven't seen the Superman in my head that I read in comics and grew up watching in animation all the time brought to life in a film, so until they nail that version in my eyes, I'd prefer they not move onto something else. I think there's still a great modern Supes film featuring the traditional Supes that hasn't been made yet, and I'm dying to see it.

So could the problem be your expectations?

Nah. Like I said, I'd have been happy with Flyby if it had been made, based on the final draft. The problem is Snyder went way too far in the opposite direction of the Donner version. In that vast gulf between the two, there's a happy medium to be found, and it honestly shouldn't be that hard to find. You can modernize the character without rejecting the basic principles he's about. As they've proven on on TV.

It couldn't possibly be :woo:

I understand. I love Batman Begins so much that it left me content with whatever Batman followed because I got my Batman movie. I would love the same with Superman. I appreciate the original Superman movie but it's not something that I hold on a pedestal that can't be topped. What's frustrating is so many of these other Superman movies have self inflicted wounds that doom it to underachieve right from the start.

Man of Steel was at least a good movie, if not better.

Christopher Reeves was very much Superman or well especially golden and silver age.

Dean Cain was similar to TAS supes

Henry Cavill has a lot of similarities with modern age supes but the characterization was rocky because of Snyder.

Now I'm curious what what is YOUR clark kent/superman

Reeve was NOT Golden Age. He was all Silver/Bronze. And that's the main reason I didn't care for him, as that is my least-favorite era for Supes. A Golden Age/Morrison Action Comics take would be cool. But just give me a Dean Cain/Tyler Hoechlin approach to the character but with a budget and I'm good. To me, they hit the right notes that the 90's animated one did, where Clark Kent's not a caricature but naturally a mild-mannered dork with a sense of humor that Lois actually comes to respect because he's a great reporter and a person with a lot of conviction and integrity. That little aspect is VITAL for my enjoyment, because I have to buy the romance aspect. Birthright was a near ideal template for a modern Supes origin movie to me. The only aspect I'd jettison is the backstory with Lex.

Despite his youth during his time in the role (or perhaps maybe even because of it), Dean Cain has come the closest to capturing what I personally imagine Clark Kent/Superman to be.

Okay you're awesome for being a fellow Dean Cain and Tyler Hoechlin fan! Well it seems like it.

Dean Cain and that show was very underrated to me and I like Tyler better than Henry

Agreed on both counts. If Dean had a better voice/presence as Supes, he would've been absolutely perfect to me. But his Clark was SO great, imo. And Tyler's my favorite all-around live-action portrayal to date, as he's got shades of Dean's Clark, but is a bit more naturally confident and authoritative as Supes.

Is there anything else to the latest Henry Cavill as Superman buzz or it's just him trying to to keep the role again?

I would dream more than any other comic film to have MoS2 with Cavill in a role and story that had the tone of the JL and JLU superman. There are literally hundreds of brilliant character moments in the animated universe and yet WB is so god damn stupid to not capture or literally just take those ideas and put them on screen. They are really the dumbest most idiotic studio possible when it comes to the live action Superman character
