DC Films The DC Studios News and Discussion Thread

Pretty sure absolutely no one was confused by JK Simmons popping up playing Jonah again in the MCU. Fairly easy to deduce that he was playing an MCU version of the character, it's not exactly a fair comparison here and not sure where you got that impression from. As for Judi Dench, she was the only returning actor to come back from a previous Bond run.

I assumed he was being sarcastic there.

WandaVision deliberately went out of its way to confuse people about whether Evan Peters was or wasn't actually Quicksilver, whether he was actually Wanda's brother somehow and whether he was actually from the Fox universe or not.

It's still at worst the number 2 most popular MCU D+ series and one of their most popular projects since Endgame.

If that was the case, then:

i like what Gunn said about Shared universe right there.

“Shared universes” should add fun to the individual stories, not the other way around. The individual stories and characters are much more important to me than the connections between them.

I just see it as when those actors come back as the same characters, anything referred to can be seen as their preexisting history. When Legacy establishes Superman’s origin, and he’s Kryptonian, no one will think about where the idea comes from. It’s just inherent to the character. So if Peacemaker talks about his dead dad, or Waller refers to her daughter, it’s just their history as a character.

I don’t think it’ll matter in the long run tbh. 99% of everything is changing. And like others said, no one cared when Simmons or Dench popped up again. They just watched the movie.

Too early to say how this will be handled, but I think Gunn's wording not being that straight and into the point is what's making a lot of folks confused. As for me, I'm just taking Creature Commando as step 1 of this universe and onward without having the need to see Peacemaker or revisiting TSS and Blue Beetle.
I think Mr. J. Jonah Jamieson and M are bigger characters or at least on the same level as Waller, Peacemaker, and Blue Beetle. All three are side DC characters. I guess people need something to complain about since nothing is currently going on.

Strange Adventures
  • A project adapting Tom King’s Strange Adventures run is in early development for the DCU. [Note: This information predates the WGA strike.]
  • Edi Gathegi is signed on to reprise his role as Mister Terrific. [Note: This information predates the SAG-AFTRA strike.]

What i love most about this is the direction, the clear sense of direction and plan.
If that all will end up well is a different question, but at the moment i just love how this all feels.
A clear direction and plans...that is what was missing the last 10 years.

Have to agree. Even if the DCU fails horrendously they at least will have tried a much more methodical approach this time.

I hope they can learn from the mistakes of not only the previous WB regime, but also the MCU, because, despite their success, Marvel Studios doesn't have a faultless track record.

Per Variety:

"None of the stars cast by Zack Snyder for 2016’s “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” and 2017’s “Justice League” — including Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Gal Gadot, Ezra Miller and Momoa — will reprise their roles in the new DC universe in character."

"Some on the lot are convinced that another company, most likely Universal, will buy Warner Bros. within two years."

That last one in particular is a major point of concern. More studio shakeups amidst efforts to stabilize the DC IP.

I wouldn't be surprised if Warners and, eventually, Disney are swallowed up by some ISP at some point, but sort of like when Disney made a move for Fox, Warners is in this weird place where they still have to make content even though they could be bought out by someone who has a completely different vision. So who knows how long the DCU or anything under Warners will be able to take flight before some other CEO says 'No, let's do this instead.'

But wouldn't be surprised if the whole Momoa as Lobo thing does catch fire.

Universal feels like a weird, weeeeird bet. Can they really afford to absorb a 40 billion debt?

These constant mergers and acquisitions are becoming too much for me. Speaking purely from a DC fan's perspective, the prospect of having to go through even more upheaval just a couple of years into Gunn's and Safran's DCU is extremely concerning.

The big selling point was that we were finally going to get a cohesive vision under a newly established DC Studios for at least the next ten years (provided they had success). If Universal did acquire WBD, they could easily undo DC Studios, Gunn's and Safran's positions, and whatever plan they had going. So once again, can't help but feel uncertain about the future of DC.

Getting pretty ****ing irritating, to be frank.

I'll be honest but even with Matt Reeves' Batman and Gunn's Superman, DC is the last thing I care at WB at the moment.

My biggest fear is they will do what Disney did to Fox where they much bought dozens of IPs and they pretty much only used a handful (and certainly not in the most creative ways) while the rest got lost into oblivion.

Also Universal would surely want a better streaming service than Peacock so I'm guessing that's a big part of the appeal, even if the whole streaming mentality is starting to deflate.

Don't get me started. While the larger conversation among our kind was 'This means Disney gets the X-Men and FF,' there's a plethora of Fox content that has either gone underutilized or, like you said, lost into oblivion. At least in the case of FX and FXX networks, or even (Fox) Searchlight, Disney seems to have left those largely alone without any sort of rebranding. But it's inevitable that when a company that owns a comic book IP is brought up for sale, that is going to dominate the conversation.
