DC Films The DC Studios News and Discussion Thread

To be clear I am not happy Marvels bombed...I don't want films to fail even when I have no interest in them. Just weird to see MCU fans acting kind of like Snyder Bros after all the grief we DCU fans got for hating on critics.

I think it’s just part and parcel of fandom. There’s a degree of tribalism that brings out the worst in fans when the thing they like starts to become played out or unstable. Superhero movie fans are just like sports fans at this point. There’s a lot of nuance in that of course. It’s just to say that the way their preferred “team” can become a reflection of themselves is a common trait.

I’m certainly guilty of this and only in like the last couple years have I been able to step out of it. I wouldn’t really consider myself a true fan of any of these properties anymore. There’s stuff I’m interested in for sure, but I move on pretty quickly these days.

Love the stuff you love of course. Extract whatever joy you can from it all. But once it stops being joyful, it’s okay to move on to other things too.

I think it's a wake-up call for hardcore MCU fans who believed their universe could do no wrong and wouldn't have a film be a bomb. People could probably write off Eternals' having a negative score as just a one-time thing, but when it happened again with Quantumania and again with The Marvels, I think panic set in that hey, this fun ride of hit after hit could never last forever. Again, this has been going on with DC even before the shared universe. The execs did a hard pivot after Batman Forever to give us Batman and Robin. They did a hard pivot after BvS got critically lashed, giving us Studio Squad and a Superfriends film in 2017.

So DC fans have been through the ringer and then some for years, which makes it interesting that hardcore MCU fans are melting down over just one movie bombing. As if some could not fathom that one movie in their franchise would ever reach this point. No good ride lasts forever. If anything, fans should take solace in that it was this one that bombed and not something like Blade or the Fantastic Four.

I'm not surprised, a lot of the people online act the same. DCEU die hards, Star Wars, etc. The MCU just hid it better because they were more successful. Now with their movies flopping they can't hide it

And tbf even before the Marvel every MCU movie that had a tepid reception there was a bit of "Screw the critics" mentality like other fanbases. It was always there. Now they just can't hide it

I am looking forward to seeing how Aquaman does over the holidays. It has chance to do well if it is as action packed as the first one. Hopefully a good ending to the DCEU. How much does it need to make at the box office to make a profit?

I would've much rather seen this happen to Fantastic Four than the Marvels.

I don't know what specific comments people are talking about here, though I certainly believe there are people on the internet going insane beyond reason and trying to flat out conspiracy theory reality away.

But for a lot of people I'm seeing (myself included), the reason they're so incredibly disappointed and saddened and really want to see some kind of a silver lining somewhere is precisely because its happening to this movie. If it were Ant-man going this low, a lot of us wouldn't be bothered (not that I hate Ant-man at all, but he got three movies and they were always mid anyway). Carol, Monica and Kamala deserve better and by all rights they should have gotten better given how massively succesful Captain Marvel was to begin with.

Plus, the incredibly depressing realization that studios are just going to go straight back to being insanely gun-shy about ever attempting to make anything starring female superheroes. It took them over a decade to finally make Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel after Elektra and Catwoman bombed and now the studios are probably going to start thinking of both of those characters' successes as a fluke (never mind the actual lessons they ought to take from what hurt those sequels).

I had the same fear when I heard how badly The Marvels was performing; the chance that this could impact female-led CBMs across the board. Six Resident Evil, five Underworld, and five Hunger Games movies have shown that audiences are fine with female-led action franchises. Just make them entertaining (I mean, the RE and UW films aren't exactly high-art! :funny: Can't speak for HG - I've never watched one!). And don't come across like you're pushing an agenda (even if you are) - it'll alienate people (although, granted, some people will always 'find' an agenda anyway).

I mean, even Black Widow did relatively well. Yeah, it was a decade too late, about a character who was dead, and came out simultaneously on Disney+, but all things considered, for a film released in 2021, it still did pretty well. But I can see what you're saying about how that, Wonder Woman, and Captain Marvel being seen as flukes.

Though Gunn wasn't my first pick to co-run DC Studios, he's not a fool. There's no way he's not looking at what's happening to The Marvels and thinking he'll do everything he can to ensure projects like Woman of Tomorrow or even shows like Paradise Lost don't suffer a similar fate.

A lot of comments that people ripping the film hate women and such.

This is what bothers me so much.
The Marvels not making the money, is something that needs to be talked about.
But the discussion is dominated by the unwashed incels who blame women and "woke" on it, when that is the last thing that is to blame for it.

And we need to call that out more because look at Variety etc, Mainstream sites who help promote this false narrative.
Look at how Variety claimed Nia DaCosta was a Questionable choice for this movie because she hasnt done 30+ movies yet.

A lot of the narrative around this movie isnt tackling the actual problems and frames the "why does nobody show up" wrong.

The fact that Supergirl (and hopefully some kind of new Wonder Woman project) is already in the works is the one thing giving me hope that we won't have to wait another decade to see a woman star in a superhero movie again.

But the issue with that is that with all of the uncertainty around both WBD and the superhero genre in general I'm not really going to believe this entire new DCU is actually going to happen until we've gotten both Superman and Batman released without having further plans canceled or heavily consolidated.

No, you're right. For what little optimism I have about the DCU, it's blunted by Warners always making some blunder move.

Unlike you, I think WB actually recognizes the value in solo Wonder Woman.
Wonder Woman will probably get a solo but I believe male superheroes will be in the movie. My hope is it will be Superman and Batman. Sorry if I made you think I don’t like Wonder Woman who in my opinion was the best thing in the Snyderverse.

Not a name that would have sprung to my mind for Luthor, but I like Hoult and he seems a nice guy. Be interesting to see what he does with it.

I'm pretty happy with him. I would likely have chosen Bill Skarsgaard over him but not going to complain and think he will be very good.

Still weird that people think he hired someone because of fan casting.

Yeah I'm not a fan of that one at all.

I don't like it either, but I've also never cared about Maxwell Lord, so oh well.
