Arrow The Emily Bett Rickards/ Felicity Smoak Thread

Is anyone surprised even a little at this? I'm not.

The writers are clearly not that invested in telling a well thought out story anymore and rather just want the shock factor to get the audience talking.

That's something that I've heard said a lot on the Quiver podcast. Their feelings were that the writers were no longer writing to tell a good story, but rather writing for the Variety or Entertainment Weekly article that would show up the next morning.

Yeah, that's basically the feeling I get when I watch the show now. They're like "Let's do this! Oh, and this! And this!" But they never really want to make it flow into a logical story. S4, to me, feels like a rough first draft of a story where they have outlines of what they want to do but haven't polished it off yet...but then they procrastinated and had to use the unpolished turd, rather than fix it. S1 and S2 both felt very much like finished products, and even S3 did, flaws and all. It wasn't great, but it felt like they had an idea and stuck with it the whole way, did what they needed to to make sure it fit their vision, and then published it. But S4 just felt the opposite, to me.

It sucks that the cast have this mentality that their characters stories aren't/can't be explored properly because they aren't the main character. That shouldn't hold the writers back from telling their stories just as well as they would Olivers.

Looking at the beginning of this thread and now shows me a lot can change in 2 years LOL

She's ok. But not that interesting because the only few characters that do keep me interested in the show...aside from Arrow...I say Nyssa so far steals the show...but Laurel and Sara are pretty good. Nice to see Slade Wilson...

I don't think those shoes go with that dress.

Yeah, a lot of shows have, and still are, doing a good job properly exploring several storylines for an ensemble cast of characters simultaneously. Arrow has no excuse. If their intention for the wheelchair storyline was to get it out of the way ASAP, then why even do it at all?

It's the first moment she appears in the series behind that tech desk and they meet. :o

See, the thing is, in S2, I think Olicity is really cute. It's not over-the-top and it's only in a few episodes. There was chemistry, their actual feelings for each other were usually subtle and not stated outright, and when they finally were, it was in the season finale. And even then, it was cute, not in-your-face. It only got really bad in S3. Even in the first episode, when Oliver and Felicity went out on their first date, wouldn't have been so bad if, at the end, Felicity hadn't said "This is the end of it" only to proceed to pine for Oliver in every single episode afterward. They bungled it, that's the long and short of it. If it had been handled properly, Olicity could've been cute. Instead, it's become the focus of the show, it's badly written, and it's just plain annoying. :whatever:

Well I thought Olicity became a full-on thing when they had sex on R'as al Ghul's bed, which was one of the worst scenes ever in the entire show. It was like something out of a horrible daytime soap and it went on for far too long. It was totally cringeworthy.

Well, yes, that was terrible. But even through all of S3 they were pining for each other and it became so annoying. That's when Felicity stopped being her happy-go-lucky, quirky, hilarious self and became a downer who shut the lights out on Diggle and Roy because they wanted to continue in Oliver's name and she was depressed that he died. And she cried in every single episode.

I can't stand watching Felicity crying or doing her melodramatic voice quiver.

I think she was only tolerable in bite-sized portions in the early seasons, but once they tried to make her the main course and they force fed us with her every episode, she became unpalatable.

You see, I don't think Olicity started in season 2, at least, not on the show. I remember hearing about it and thinking it was some typical fandom shipping BS and didn't pay too much mind to it. That fake out in the finale felt like a tease as well. There was chemistry, yes. But it looked like Felicity was a much better match for Barry when he showed up.

It wasn't until Oliver suddenly wanted to date her in season 3 (which apparently had all its development in the comics that no one read) that I though Olicity was actually a thing, but even then, I didn't expect it to take over the show like it has.

I'm curious, what do you consider the start of Olicity?

Uh the last episode of season 2...when oli says I love you.. lols.

I wasn't feeling it...

If I were The Arrow I'd be putting the moves on Nyssa. ....don't care that her father hates me...lols. I love how they spar. Hell yas.

You see, a lot of people say that Oliver was telling the truth there, but I never saw it. I thought it was clear that they were putting on an act to outsmart Slade.

In all honesty, I don't see how someone like Oliver could fall for Felicity as hard as he does. I can definitely see her pining after him, but the way it turned out makes no sense to me personally.

Oh I see. Although yeah I sort of saw it as that but then later on through season 3...yeah. I agree with you about Oliver falling for Felicity hard...

I think he has way more chemistry with...Sara and Laurel...though he has some pretty interesting chemistry with Nyssa as well. :) But with Felicity? Naw, pass thanks...

Although I think the reason I don't feel for Olicity is because 1) I am not that familiar with a lot of the DC characters other than the known ones that have been featured plenty enough in their own adaptations in the past. 2) Never read a single comic book with Arrow...not to say I never heard of him but just never really explored the DC universe the same manner I did with Marvel... *shrugs*

Please don't shoot me. :(

Same. There was no way Oliver felt anything for her at that point. Up until season three, Oliver always seemed mildly annoyed by her attraction to him. Her comments were always met with strange looks or eye rolls. I believe that Oliver could've eventually fallen for her in a way that made sense, but it should've been a slow burn over the course of a season.
