The Gaming Lounge: Beyond - Part 6

The one for the Xbox? I thought that one was pretty mediocre, but maybe partially because the hype was so high at the time. Never did care enough to try the others.

I guess the irony of that is that I followed Fable all through its development, since it was first revealed as "Project Ego". I was so disappointed when the reviews and reactions started coming out that I didn't bother buying it. However, I played it like a year or so after the fact and really enjoyed.

Fable II is alright, I guess. I didn't like it very much when it first came out, but compared to Fable III it's great.

Yeah, getting away from the hype of it probably saved you a lot. You have to be weary of any project ol' Peter M. did living up to his ambitious, but I remember Fable was going to be his magnum opus.

It weren't.

I remember all the way back when it was announced in 2002. It was called Project Ego, and I heard about it a lot. There was a lot of Hype around the game but it never lived to expectations.

He also said the same thing about Fable 2 and made huge promises. That didn't live up to expectations, either.

Just reminded me of BC, one of the few games I was genuinely disappointed in when I learned it was cancelled.

Have you tried any of the Tales series?

No I haven't but with a recommendation I'll definitely look into it.

My experience atm is basically the X-Men Legends/MUA, the KOTOR games, Jade Empire, and a few other games.

MMORPG wise...SWG and SWTOR.

Well, it depends if you mind playing old games, I'm a bit of a classic gamer. I still have a Dreamcast and a PS2, which I play regularly (well, more-so the latter).

But Tales of Symphonia is one of the better RPGs of the 6th generation. It will be available in HD (together with its sequel) in 2014 for the PS3.

But that does you no good right now, so... if you enjoyed KOTOR, there's Mass Effect. It's essentially the spiritual successor to KOTOR (you'll be able to tell just by playing it), except set in its own universe. Perhaps the most prolific Western RPG of our time. So worth checking that out if you haven't already.

Kingdom of Amalur is another acclaimed one. I've never played it, but people who I know have good taste never shut up about it.

Another one for the 360 would be Tales of Vesperia, depending on your tastes.

Giantbomb apparently had a lot of their video equipment stolen while in LA for E3.

I was just checking that out. ****ing sucks too. Giant Bomb's E3 shows are some of the best stuff to come out of E3 period.

Damn. It would have been great tonight. I wonder what guests they had lined up.

It's a ****ing bummer, hopefully they're able to get back on their feet for tomorrow's show. I had my beer and study notes ready to go and everything. Ah well.

On a personal level, I found Amalur a bit repetitive. I think it has, in part, to do with how they were originally thinking of making it into an MMO. The world is pretty large, there are lots of enemies, and quests. In the end though the story felt average, and the hack and slash fighting got a bit old (to me) after awhile. I'm not saying it's a bad game, it's just not my favorite.

Any RPG recommendations?

Since you said you have PS3, and 360. I guess it depends on what type you're into.
----
Mass Effect series is great if you like sci-fi RPG's.
----
Dragon Age Origins is a good medieval style game, but Dragon Age 2 is meh.
----
Skyrim is great for an immersive medieval RPG, and Fallout 3 (or New Vegas) are the same, except with a 1950's, post apocalyptic vibe.
----
Demon's Souls, or Dark Souls for gameplay and atmosphere. Difficulty is a bit up there though. Has an interesting online feature.
----
Valyria Chronicles is a good game, with a more tactical approach (it's an RTS RPG, think a 3rd person Final Fantasy Tactics with cell shaded graphics).
----
Disgaea 3 or 4 for over the top crazy RTS RPG fun (again think FFT, but with 9,999,9999 damage, swinging around your whole group, over the top attacks, and comedic story).
----
Ni no kuni for a good anime style RPG (had studio Ghibli input, google the name if you're curious which animes they've done).
----
Dragon's Dogma is another one that's good for the gameplay, and atmosphere. Also has a neat import another players npc helper feature. Only one save slot though, but does have a new game+ feature, and a collective everyone online collectively damages and kills it, boss.
----
Persona 3 (PS2 title) is on PSN as a digital download for $10. I liked it a lot. it's a school life setting, with some dark themes, but is a last gen title.
----
I'd say FFXIII, it was decent the first time around, but it's just too linear for a second playthrough. I really can't recommend it.
----

I know there are other games, I'm just drawing a blank atm. Those are what came to mind.

I'll definitely look into the bolded...I was already researching Skyrim and Mass Effect (Trilogy) and will probably pick those up.

Ni No Kuni looks right up my alley thats a must look also.

Thanks for the recommendations. :yay::up:

in case you didnt know, I heard that the best game of this generation is released today

Since I always import my games, I will have to wait. :( It got dispatched today.

Why import? Is it not being releases where you are at?

I think I'm going to leave work early today to get it

Oh, it is. But when I buy it here, it costs me €60 or €70. UK Version, only €47.
