Smash Bros isn't going to need help on Wii U. No matter how low the install base is, the sales will be incredibly strong for it. Proof is in the original and Melee on the N64 and GC, respectively, selling roughly as much on their respective systems as Brawl did on the mammoth god king hardware seller of the Wii. No, I think it was simply an idea they had to create two versions side-by-side because they know both will sell well. Just the way they went about it is not the best solution for the Wii U if they're really cutting out characters just because the 3DS can't support enough characters based on it's much, much lower end hardware.
