The Good Citizens of Metropolis: The Casting Thread

Yeah that’s the only drawback (maybe). If WB wants to distance themselves from Cavill, then a guy who looks like his brother might not be considered. But I hope that line of thinking doesn’t enter into their process.

Exactly. If the person cast looks like Superman, he's likely gonna resemble someone who's already played him. I've seen several people on Twitter also saying David looks like Tom Welling. And even stuff like this:

It's just the Superman look. That ain't a drawback.

The strangest thing about David Corenswet is that he would have probably made the perfect actor for JJ Abrams Superman script. I have not read the script in many years, but what I do remember is Corenswet is the best age, and look, for what Abrams was trying to accomplish.

Well nothing to say they can’t team up on a new Superman script ;)

I don’t think he looks so much like him that you’d think they were brothers though. They just both resemble the Superman look.

I think he looks like a lot like Cavill, but I don't see the others at all.

I wouldn't mind if he were cast. I just can't say I'm expecting it.

Maybe for Jor El, butway to old to be a franchise superman.

Obviously. So did Cavill. So did Jackman for Wolverine and Hemsworth for Thor. That generally comes with a role like this.
You say obviously, but to Cavill's level??? He went above and beyond, he's set the benchmark quite high and being smaller than Corenswet, it looks bulkier, Corenswet has some frame to fill.

View attachment 34089 View attachment 34090 View attachment 34091 Cavill was in great shape across all 3 film but he wasn’t “steroid” looking at all. The issue with the bulk was in BvS & JL when he was in costume because of the padding.
I agree, he was in perfect shape and had built on it over years and took it seriously. His height and build also helped a lot. It's going to be tough for anyone to cut to that state without camera/angle tricks.

A thinner, more natural material for a suit would look amazing in my option on someone like Cavil. I would love to see this. It looks impressive regardless and Superman isn't about looking tough, he is superman, enough said.. also, under his work clothes this works easy.
Be brave WB, be brave.

Although the model in the Under Armor shirt looks great, it might not be used, the material, I mean. Dean Cain had "tights" for his uniform in the pilot, but I remember reading one of the shows producers saying that the biggest problem with the tights was sweat. That is why that show changed the material. I think most material like that pictured would give the same problem, though some one else may know better.

No, I don't want it to be to Cavill's level, and never suggested as such. It's just a given that someone who gets a role like this is gonna have to bulk up. Cavill went overboard, imo. His muscles look unnatural and more like a hindrance to basic mobility than anything, imo, because he's already got rather short limbs/small frame to begin with. He looked...puffy. I don't want a puffy Supes next time out. Corenswet's lanky build is more similar to Hemsworth and Jackman's early builds, but he's taller than both of them, so if he came even close to putting on as much muscle as either, he'd be quite formidable.

I hear ya - he will have a hard time too, being so tall and lean naturally.

I think the MOS look was perfect, the BvS look, esp the suit, it was too puffy. It surprises me really esp with Snyder being the way he is. MOS was such a good spring board. Sometimes, in Hollywood, it's better to be shorter than it is taller, when it comes to muscles.

I don't think so, as I think both Jackman and Hemsworth looked better to me than Cavill, muscle-wise. So the taller, lankier build works better for bulking up, in my eyes.

You don't think it's easier for a smaller person to look bigger? More imposing? Like Hardy as Bane, Tom Cruise, RDj?

Think of Ryan Reynolds, he's looks great on screen with his shirt off, in real life he is tiny and lean. I think you are missing that I am saying, it's easy to cheat ya way to looking good, or take the easier way, than for someone like Hugh Jackman, who has said himself it's a nightmare when he has such a large area to gain - same for Batfleck. anyways, it is what it is I guess.

The only one I've ever actually found physically imposing of those you mentioned was Hardy. And that's mainly because he's Hardy, lol. Cruise and RDJ have always looked small to me. Henry looked puffy, but still short (which is funny because he's not actually that short, he just seems to have a short person's proportions). Reynolds has been ripped for a long time but he's never looked like a big guy to me. Hemsworth and Jackman both had the more physically imposing physiques, imo. But saying it's more work for them to achieve that, I hear you. I just don't consider that a knock against any candidate, though, as those guys have proven it's obviously perfectly achievable, and IMO, the results are more impressive-looking.

For the record, I'm not saying size can't be cheated. Of course it can. Hardy as Bane is a great example, which was improved by his generally intimidating screen presence. I'm just saying I find those who are taller and bulked up from lankier builds to have the more visually impressive physiques at the end of the day. And it's what I imagine Clark having, as that's the kind of physique that can also be more easily hidden underneath clothes. So if anything, I consider David having that kind of frame to be a plus in his column, not a minus.

Felicity Jones is my top choice to play Lois Lane. She looks identical to most Lois iterations. More importantly, she has the chops down to play the fun, spunky, and tough sides of Superman's love.

For Lex Luthor, I would cast Oscar Isaac. He can bring an intimidating presence to the role and display eccentricities as well. The right blend of intrigue, ruthlessness, and dark humor needed. Essentially combining the best aspects of each previous Lex that came before in a nice package.
