The Good Citizens of Metropolis: The Casting Thread

Jones is very inconsistent actress for me. Sometimes she’s very charming and fun, but other times she’s deathly dull.

The only one I've ever actually found physically imposing of those you mentioned was Hardy. And that's mainly because he's Hardy, lol. Cruise and RDJ have always looked small to me. Henry looked puffy, but still short (which is funny because he's not actually that short, he just seems to have a short person's proportions). Reynolds has been ripped for a long time but he's never looked like a big guy to me. Hemsworth and Jackman both had the more physically imposing physiques, imo. But saying it's more work for them to achieve that, I hear you. I just don't consider that a knock against any candidate, though, as those guys have proven it's obviously perfectly achievable, and IMO, the results are more impressive-looking.

For the record, I'm not saying size can't be cheated. Of course it can. Hardy as Bane is a great example, which was improved by his generally intimidating screen presence. I'm just saying I find those who are taller and bulked up from lankier builds to have the more visually impressive physiques at the end of the day. And it's what I imagine Clark having, as that's the kind of physique that can also be more easily hidden underneath clothes. So if anything, I consider David having that kind of frame to be plus in his column, not a minus.

Yup, we're on the same page. That was my initial comment, Coranswet is going to have to put a big shift in, to look that big, but the gains are so worth it. Cavill having shorter arms, t's just beyond his reach to look that imposing. haha, you see what I did there?

90s Superman cast time!

Superman - Homefront star Kyle Chandler making his transition to the big screen
Lois Lane - Diane Lane
Lex Luthor - John Malkovich
Perry White - Dennis Hopper
Jimmy Olsen - Eddie Furlong (got better management in this alternate timeline)
Jonathan Kent - Kris Kristofferson
Martha Kent - Ellen Burstyn
Jor-El - Sean Connery
John Henry Irons - Delroy Lindo
John Corben - Woody Harrelson
Brainiac - Christopher Walken

Also, Oscar Isaac was my #1 choice for Lex before my Tom Cruise-as-Lex dream took over. I still think he'd be great.

As a role, it’s not quite as sexy as Lex, but I could see Isaac as Bruno Mannheim. Make Intergang a big problem for Superman, while Lex is in the shadows.

That feels more like a 2012 role for Oscar.
Maybe. But the MCU has been spinning straw into gold with A-list actors playing basic ass, second-string comic villains. I want a taste of that.

Plus a wouldn’t mind seeing a little connective tissue between new Supes and the New Gods.

That’s true. Although I’d rather see Oscar take on a recurring hero role myself.

Hear me out. John Krasinski could help revitalize Superman. He's got the charm and personality necessary for the "Big Blue Boy Scout." Plus, his time as Jim shows he can play the insecure Clark.

Often when Krasinski is mentioned for a role people criticize his look. Maybe it is time someone imperfect, or unconventionally good looking, were cast. It could help make Superman relatable.

Ehhh...

I honestly liked him for Cap back in the day, even if he is more superhero-y now. But he’s 40. At best, he’ll be 42-43 when this goes down. I wouldn’t hate an older Supes, but I don’t think it’ll go that way. Plus I think he’s more recognizable than I care for a Superman actor to be at the offset.

Yeah he'd be so great. He can serious and smart, yet fun in his villainy, at least if Ex Machina is anything to go by.

It could help make Superman relatable.

I agree. Krasinski's a good pick imo. He definitely possesses that natural everyman quality. I don't need Superman to have supermodel powers.

My pick is still this guy though, if he still wants to be in the franchise game. He would just instantly make Supes a more interesting character to watch (...and if Abrams produces/directs? It wouldn't surprise me).

I would be fine with Corenswet, but he seems a bit on the bland side, and just so similar to Cavill. I just feel like it wouldn't move the needle much for general audiences.

Nah, Corenswet is already the superheroic version of Krasinski, imo. And seems to be a better actor as well. John is likable, but has zero range. His Jack Ryan is just a military-trained Jim Halpert who's lost his sense of humor. And If he's cast as Mr. Fantastic, he'll be playing Jim Halpert: Genius. I've already seen more range in Corenswet's acting and I've only seen him in two shows.

Superman - David Corenswet

Lois Lane - Summer Bishil

I kind of feel like her role on The Magicians was her audition as a somewhat meaner, far more vulgar Lois Lane who’s also capable of magic.

Also she’s only five years older than he is, for those of you who’ve still got heart palpitations over Amy Adams having the audacity to be 9 years older then Cavill.

I would characterize my idea of what Superman looks like more as "cool" than as "good looking", although being good looking does tend to be a natural consequence of it. I mean, it's not like I'm thinking, "Superman better be someone women want to bang." Not that Krasinski is bad looking, anyway.

I just think Superman looking cool helps balance the colorfulness of the character and the potential corniness of his idealism and the nerdiness of Clark if they go there, where without it he might seem too cartoony. And in general, I like action heroes looking cool, and it's never been an obstacle to relatability for me. And I'm used to Superman looking a certain way. So for me it would be hard to get enthusiastic about that.

After his performance in "Hollywood", anyone think Dylan McDermott could be a good Perry White or Jonathan Kent?
