The Good Citizens of Metropolis: The Casting Thread

Cavill's not any better an actor when he gets to use his normal accent, though. He's just a lifeless wooden actor, plain and simple, imo. There's a reason it took him a decade of being a "known entity" in Hollywood before landing a lead role while looking like a marquee-ready perfect action figure, and it's no coincidence that it happened to be with a director who prioritizes visuals over everything else. It's because his look is all Cavill brings to the table.

Jonah Hauer King, has both British and American citizenship, and he does a very good US accent, probably hearing it from his mother.

He has a great look, height, and talent. Not my first choice but he could do well.

True. But, as he's more comfortable speaking w/ his natural accent, the subpar acting bothers me less. Slightly. lol

Thank you, You articulated my issue with his American accent! I think his Superman performance was very negatively affected by his American accent.

Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn accent is even worse. Those were two of the most positively received castings in the DCEU and I thought they were both pretty bad partly because of those accents.

Not everyone is going to be a Bale. There are a lot of bad American accents. I’m hoping for an American Superman this time.

I don't disagree about Cavill, but Robbie's "Brooklynese" accent isn't too bad, generally speaking. It's actually quite good in her The Wolf of Wall Street performance. With Harley, though, I think she just goes for a more zany and theatrical approach to the character — almost like a cartoon come to life.

It's very hard to figure out the supporting cast without having a Clark first.

I thoroughly disagree. I feel like the supporting cast is the only thing we’re doing well in this thread.

Hmmmm. I feel like he isn’t super tapped into the social media superhero **** so that’s interesting. He’d he an inspired choice.

Howerton as Luthor would be downright inspired. He is transparently capable of great, dramatic performances even if he hasn't had a chance to prove that yet. You can just see it in flashes on IASIP.

We will see with Blackberry but that it self will be comedy so it will be hard to know if he can really disappear into a different character

If they're doing jor-el, who do they get? who's the modern day brando?

Modern day Brando is definitely Daniel Day-Lewis. That would be the gold standard but others could pull it off too. This isn't an origin so Jor-El might not feature much.

If we do see Jor-El (and Lara) again, and I’m assuming we probably will based on the mention of Kryptonian heritage in the synopsis… I’d kind of like to see a younger actor to juxtapose the (ideally) older Kents.

Always strikes me as odd to have a fifty-something first-time parent.

Has there ever been a “big country boy strong” Superman in live action? Tom Welling is probably the closest. Reeves and Rough were tall thin guys. Cavill was close but to me he was not tall enough. I would like a taller Cavill type actor as Superman. A young Ben Affleck.:D

I'd very much like an actor that gives off more of a rural vibe.

Spencer House. :o

Yeah, Cavill has a self-serious quality about him that he can't seem to shake, even when on-screen. That he tends to enunciate his words a little too strongly when affecting an American accent (a common mistake with British amateurs) makes it even worse IMO.

It really compounds the problem of Superman not being “relatable” when he doesn’t actually seem like a guy from Kansas taking naturally.

Yehp. Clark should have a natural chill demeanor with can do attitude, ready to get his hands dirty, do a hard day's work and come back with a smile on his face feeling accomplished having done the best he can, and obviously in the scheme of Superman there will be the harder day that will emotionally drain him but he still knows how to control his emotions to a good level.

Just a thought , Clark is often separated into 3 personas but really his Smallville self should be enough to be the same Clark at The Daily Planet. Its Superman that needs to be more calm, warm and confident.

I'll bet a 100 bucks Lex will be a well known A lister.

Daniel Day Lewis would never have his lines printed on cue cards around the set and stuck to the baby simply because he couldn’t be bothered enough to memorize them. If DDL took on being Jor-El, he would go full method and burn his house down just to save a child.

But I’d agree that I would be surprised to see Jor-El in the flesh here. And if you did, it would be a hologram and very short.

Keanu Reeves would kill it as Brainiac

Ah no I don’t think it’s a good idea to start a franchise with someone so controversial. Lots of good actors out there and superman really needs to regain his wholesome image
