The HellBoy II: Golden Army Box Office Predictions

WOW! - Well done Hellboy, and all involved!

As the fifth comic book or superhero-based movie of the summer, Guillermo del Toro's Hellboy II: The Golden Army (Universal) was coming into the weekend with questions whether it might beat Will Smith's own superhero movie Hancock (Sony). Another strong marketing campaign from Universal paid off as the second movie based on Mike Mignola's comic character topped the box office with an opening weekend of just under $36 million, a 55% increase above the opening of the original Hellboy in April 2004, as well as surpassing the opening of del Toro's previous dark comic book sequel Blade II two years prior. The movie averaged $11,200 in 3,204 theaters, and it will be vying to make $100 million over the summer despite heavy competition in the next few weeks.

It's all looking good ... But poor Eddie Murphy:hehe: - guess he's not such a big name after all.

Is it just me or is that a pretty poor opening, its needs to do a lot of business in the week in order to get its budget back.

I may be wrong because i am no expert at all this stuff.

Well when budget it is 80 million you can get that easily world wide. But yeah if Hancock can get 63 million as good as Hellboy 2 was it should get that much.

It was on about 600 less screens than Hancock but still beat it out, and it opened quite a bit higher than the first film...no, that's not poor by any stretch.

If the movie ends up making only 36million for this weekend it better get to 46million by this friday to have a chance at 100million domestically. Furthermore, if it suffers a second weekend dropoff significantly greater than 50% it has almost no chance at 100million.

It'll do fine, and will get as many customers as possible before TDK comes out.

I've never been a HB fan, but did see the first flick. Isn't 33 mill for and opening weekend a tad poor, especially since this is a sequel and sequels usually make more?

Anyhow, i just think this time of the year is far too competitive as far as movies go.

The first movie made what? 23 million opening weekend?

HBII made close to 40.

Yep, that's good. Word of mouth has been good for Hellboy.

Find me a sequel to any franchise that outperformed it's predecessor's opening weekend by 50%. X-men is the only one I can find.

So no, it's not a tad poor.

Didn't Blade 2 outdo Blade 1 by that much? The first Pirates movie wasn't exactly a slam opening weekend, but had great legs and the sequels broke all kinda records. Well, anyhow i think TDK will.

HB II's box office isn't poor, it's actually doing quite well & should easily make over $100 million worldwide soon.

Thats a good opening for a movie that has no big name stars.

That's pretty low.

Throughout this week, I see it making at least $50 million.

Thats pretty crazy.
I liked Hellboy and all but thats a huge number that I can't see happening.
This movie vs the dark Knight will surely fail. That and the fact that most of the general public didn't even know there was a Hellboy 1.
I just can't see it making those numbers.

I can, because of word of mouth & because there are many people who are still discovering the first movie & loving it. I think that it'll make that much by the time it gets to Friday, but due to TDK it'll slow down a little.

A little under what I thought it would do but it should make 100 million during its run which will pass budget and it make some more money worldwide.

It is doing fine. It didn't have a TIH or IM budget. It cost half as much, thus should easily make its budget back.

Hellboy will make maybe 150 million world wide when everything is said and done. When your budget is 80 million and you get great responses from public and critics and have good word of mouth and could make your budget back domestically anyways. If Hellboy 2 can make 5 million per day during the week it will be around maybe 50 million on friday. TDK will crush many that is true but Hellboy 2 ties Iron Man for best summer movie so far and its amazing conisdering its Budget. Just imagine what Deltoro will do with a Hobbit Budget.

I just hope this makes enought to warrant a sequel, a drop of 50% or more next weekend could spell doom.

I find it funny how some believe that all the movies are going to fall 80% when TDK comes out. Thats just not going to happen people will see other movies too, It's not like that movie is going to do 200mil over the weekend.

Anywho, the opening for Hellboy 2 is good and completely expected but I don't think that it's going to have "good" legs because I don't think that most people will like it and it has a limited audience anyway. I'm not saying that because I didn't like it, plenty of folk have liked movies that I've disliked, it's just a feeling/prediction.

I suspect TDK or no it's going to have a fabulously horrible drop next weekend and a bad one after that. Ofcourse I'll revise if the weekdays show me a different path.
