"The Joker" in development with Todd Phillips and Martin Scorsese attached? - Part 1

Why do you trust Phillips? I mean, has he ever done anything good enough to warrant your trust? I liked The Hangover the first time I saw it and I laughed at the Tom Green scenes in Road Trip but nothing in his previous filmography convinces me that this movie will be good, aside from (maybe) the casting of Phoenix.

I recognize it's a little ridiculous to have so much faith in Phillips, but I really think he has the potential to pull it off

This was his first movie:

Dude has punk creds for life as far as I'm concerned. I know it's a documentary and doesn't necessarily translate to him making a good Joker movie.

I just think that he's a good choice to translate some grimy punk rock sensibilities into this movie. He knows that world. GG Allin was a man that was completely disregarded by society, just like the way Joaquin Phoenix has described Joker.

Old School, The Hangover and Starsky and Hutch were all very enjoyable to me. I still gotta catch War Dogs though.

I like Phillips. He's not a master director, but I've had fun with his movies. The Hangover and War Dogs are well directed films.

Phillips got a rager for Scorsese. He made his Goodfellas / Casino / Wolf of Wall Street with War Dogs, now it's time for his King of Comedy.

How good that will be, time can only tell.

Yeah it's interesting how similar this movie seems to King of Comedy

I haven't seen War Dogs or his first film, so maybe that will change my mind about him. Either way, it is, of course, true that previous filmography is not necessarily a barometer for how a director will handle a CBM. The Russos were nobodies before Marvel got ahold of them and they've made three of the best films of the genre, so hopefully Phillips will do well here. But I'm just not sure. Even if the rumors about the Joker being Batman's coke-faced half brother are complete bull****, I'm still iffy on this.

I think I probably would have watched it by now but for some reason I just don't like Miles Teller or Jonah Hill.

I love Jonah Hill, but yeah Miles has this *****e thing about him. I liked him in War Dogs, though.

Teller has a *****e-y air about him, but he's a talented guy. JK Simmons gets all the attention for Whiplash, but Teller is amazing in that film as well.

Yeah, I did like Teller in Whiplash. But overall, Teller and Jonah Hill just do nothing for me as actors. Like, I won't avoid a movie because either of them are in it but their presence in a film certainly doesn't make me want to go see it.

Marc Maron confirms his and De Niro's involvement

https://batman-news.com/2018/08/03/...-robert-de-niro-for-joker-praises-the-script/

“Alright, well yes, it is true,” Maron said. “It is true people. It is true ladies and gentlemen, I have been added to the cast of the new Joker movie being directed by Todd Phillips, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Robert De Niro. Two of the greatest actors that have ever graced the screen. And I know some of you given my recent discussions about the slow corruption of our culture and arts by the consolidation of desire around the limited options of big budget blockbuster movies in the form of superhero movies are probably kind of thinking ‘well look at this. Big talker! Look at this guy! He’s a hypocrite, he’s this or that.’

“I’ll be honest with ya,” Maron said. “My agents trying to get me an audition for this film preceeded my rants. I do not think that my opinions have changed at all. I have in my life as I’ve mentioned before read plenty of comic books, but the bottom line is this. I never thought that my life would take me to where I am now. I didn’t assume anything when I started this podcast other than I hope I can stay alive. I don’t know if I can make a living. I don’t know what you do with these podcasts but I gotta stay engaged, stay busy and try to, you know, remain on the right side of the grass.”

“So, who would’ve known that some of my dreams would have come true if they were dreams or some of my ambitions? You know making my own TV show, developing an audience as a comedian, doing the best comedy I’ve ever done in my life,” Maron said. “Having a career in show business period that the podcast itself would be successful…so given all that, certainly one of my childhood dreams, and I don’t want or like to use the word Bucket List but it was something I thought about in college and something I thought about as a fan of films was, ‘God if I was ever an actor it would be amazing to be in a scene with Robert De Niro. Wouldn’t it be amazing to act with Robert De Niro?'”

“How long have I been thinking about that? Most of my life! So, given that the time that we live in does not put a lot of resources into films like Deer Hunter, or even I would say, Raging Bull, or certainly not Taxi Driver, but probably not even Goodfellas really at this juncture in history, so given that this is the timing that this is where it’s at, once given the opportunity that it was going to happen, that I got this gig and I’m gonna do a couple of scenes maybe with Robert De Niro and Joaquin Phoenix, the next in the line of succession in great actors, ***** yes I’m going to do that. Of course, I’m going to do that,” Maron said.

“This is the movie that it’s going to be in, and hopefully it will make the cut, and honestly, it’s a pretty great script. So there you have it,” Maron said

Sweet lord.

I look at this cast and the cast for venom. Both phenomenal. Could they both suck? Hell yes, but I hope they don't.

In all honesty, if there's one that has a chance of actually being good it's this one. Venom is a lost cause. But with this movie's case I'll believe it when I ****ing see it.

Did we see any praise for Venom’s script?

I’m gonna take Maron’s word on this. I think we’re in for something special with this. I just can’t wait for our first look at Joker. Hopefully next month

I can't believe it but I...I'm actually becoming excited by this.

Yeah Venom is looking pretty sucky to me, but we'll see.

I find Maron's honesty refreshing.

I'm getting sick of people's over reverence, saying how much they love comics and want to respect the fans. I don't buy a lot of it; a lot of it just comes off as pandering now. I'm at the point where I just want more people to come out and say, "Yeah, I don't care about comic books or comic book movies, I'm just doing it because x and y." It's on the polar opposite of where we were in the 00's it was mean spirited based where people didn't give a **** about comic books and made ****** products where now it's the other extreme and suddenly everybody can't stop expressing how they love this **** where it's part of this homogenization of geek pop culture. They're both very superficial and cynical in their own ways. Instead of apathy towards fans, people are overly sensitive to pissing off the fans. Absolute love of a medium isn't the only essential in creating a great comic book film and shouldn't be a prerequisite to being accepted. It can be one of them and it can help, but it's not the absolute, end all be all like people like to think it is.

There should at least be a balance. The likes of Sam Raimi and Peter Jackson who had their filmmaker hat on first even though they were fans of the material were a happy median. Even Nolan who you can tell isn't a guy who's read a lot of comic books, but he respects and understands the material enough where it creates a balance between his vision and fidelity. Heath Ledger hated comic book movies and never read superhero comics and in the end, it didn't make any difference.

Amen, I completely agree. I feel like they over exaggerate it sometimes, and it feels like window dressing.

I have a feeling if people are expecting a movie where the Joker appears a lot, they're gonna be disappointed. They're probably just gonna market this with, "Before Batman" all over it so people know it's different yet still connected.

being a geek about **** is in right now, that's all it is. People wanna cash in on nostalgia and act like they're down with us, so to speak. Years ago it was viewed as a very niche thing and no one would own up to being into comics, now you kinda have to if you want any cred.
