The Joker Thread - Part 1

Prey is such a good Batman story. I’d be ecstatic if it provided the basis for a sequel. It’s a great option for a story set in the early days of Batman’s career. You can easily swap out some of the minor characters in that storyline with more prominent villains as well. Loads of potential.
It’s what most of us thought would happen after TDK. If Riddler isn’t trying to get personal with Bruce in this movie, then Prey would be awesome for a sequel. Especially since Catwoman is involved. Bring Dick Grayson in there and the whole adoption angle. Small parts for Penguin, maybe Zucco (I think Maroni is in prison in this universe). But Strange is straight up obsessed with Batman.

Leave Joker for a third movie.

He's probably irrelevant now (sadly IMHO) but does anyone have that photoshopped pic of Leto's Joker with the parted hairstyle and a version of the purple suit (I remember Hellblazer103 saying that it gave him "Tyrell Wellick/Mads Mikkelsen as Hannibal vibes")? I can't seem to find it anywhere else and the original Superherohype post's imgur link doesn't exist anymore.

That's cool and all, Rorschach, but I still don't want Phoenix back. I liked Joker and everything but I will be slightly disappointed because honestly I don't love his Joker as much as others , and I also didn't want Bale to play another Batman either despite him being my favorite Batman actor.

It could be years before we see the Joker in this series, if we even see him at all. So the hype surrounding Phoenix will have long since died when the Joker eventually appears. And people won't mind Phoenix not returning when they realize the movie isn't set in the same universe.
Just like the hype has died around Heath Ledger’s performance? Right... Heath was legendary and we’re still talking about him today. Leto has come and gone. But Joaquin is in the same league as Heath now. People are going to be talking about Joaquin’s Joker for a long time. You’re in the minority in thinking he wasn’t very good as Joker and it’s clouding you’re idea of how the general audience would react to a new Joker.

A new actor can and will work, it’s just going to be extremely difficult to pull it off. It can be done though. Studios have to balance risk vs reward. Phoenix (if they can get him back) is low risk high reward.

I’d love to be a fly on the wall at the WB offices right now. I’m sure there has been a lot of chatter after Joker hit 1B and Joaquin got the Oscar...

I personally loved his Joker as much as all the other versions of the character, but I agree that putting him in with all these other characters would cheapen the realistic setting a little bit.

IF Phoenix does get brought in I hope it's a different interpretation.

I know I'm in the minority about him, I don't care. I don't see how me not thinking he was the greatest thing since sliced bread means that's clouding my judgement on the general audience. I know a lot of people loved him, and make comments like "he is the Joker", but people do that for everyone. It doesn't prevent them for supporting someone new.

I’m tired of people ****ting on the idea because they don’t think it’s possible. Let’s be real, it’s totally possible. If you don’t want it, say so. Don’t act like it can’t happen because of continuity issues.

Continuity isn’t an issue. It’s not possible because it’s Joaquin f*cking Phoenix: The actor who’s turned down many tentpole films before and has been openly against that way of working. The actor who has constantly turned down high paying roles for smaller, cheaper roles. The actor who’s director, Todd Phillips, said had to basically be coerced into saying things like “Thomas Wayne” and “Gotham” on set every time because he didn’t want to be a part of an IP and would have been much more comfortable if the movie was “Arthur” instead of Joker. The actor who told Peter Travers point blank in an interview that he had no interest in playing Joker in a scene with Batman.

Phoenix has never made a career choice for money. That’s clearly not a priority of his, yet he’s obviously well off AND he’s engaged to Rooney Mara, which if you don’t know comes from a LOADED family( her mother’s family started the Steelers. Her father’s started the Giants). There is no amount of money that’s going to convince him to play Joker in a Batman film.

TECHNICALLY, it’s possible, but it’s possible in the same way that it’s possible that the Charlotte Hornets could sign LeBron James if they had the cap space. Maybe they have the cap space, but LeBron’s not walking through that door. Likewise, WB can offer Joaquin anything, but he clearly has zero interest in a Batman movie.

Stranger things have happened. I would’ve never guessed Spider-Man and the X-Men would be joining the MCU, but here we are.

I think a lot of this depends on where Joaquin is at in his career. He might be more ready to do more studio projects. We’ll see if he accepts the Captain Hook role in Disney’s reboot.

I wold not mind if the joker is skipped over. Would rather see other villains like Madhatter, Hugo Strange, another proper stab at Scarecrow
Hard disagree on my end. You don't need to have him as a main villain in any of these movies, sure, but just outright foregoing the character's existence in this trilogy would be a monumental mistake imo, especially if Battinson knocks it out of the park (which he most likely will).

Depends on how Reeves wants to use the Joker. If he only intends on using him as background noise in Arkham...he could try to get Joaquin for something like that. A Hannibal Lecter role might intrigue Joaquin because he doesn’t have to do the usual fighting with Batman or promotion that he hates. Think about Michael Mann’s Manhunter in the 80’s and how that character was used. Search the scene on YouTube if you haven’t seen it. Batman goes to him for information. That’s all you need.

I can think like an executive and have thought like an executive. I just don't care about that logic here at all. I don't want to see Phoenix in this film series or even a Joker sequel.
If I drink 6 litres of petrol mixed with vodka and paint thinner, I can think like Arad and Rothman for a few minutes.

If Phoenix accepts the Captain Hook role, all bets are off. Perhaps working with DeNiro changed his outlook on studio vs indie films.

I have a few Joke suggestions

You know the role of a psychopath suits him, don't deny yourselves such possibility

How about Liguizamo as Luigi Mario doing an impression of Leto's Joker?

Win.

Vincent Cassel is my top choice for Joker.

But, I think that Adrien Brody would be a solid choice too.

It could be another six or seven years before we see the Joker in this series, assuming they leave him until the the third film.

Vincent Cassel would be a 50 year old French Joker lol. Nah, may as well stick to Joaquin.
