The Joker Thread - Part 1

Joker? What makes you think that?
I lowkey think a black Joker makes a lot of sense. And if you’re going with a black Joker, there’s clearly no better option IMO. You could really play up that dichotomy of privileged white boy vs the downtrodden black man. Delve into just how different two people’s life can be in the same city, because of the family you’re born into. Feels pretty relevant to me

Or you could just make him permawhite by chemicals just like the comics and animated series and videogames and to hell with it, which regardless of which actor they cast I'd prefer if they went that route.

Um. Don’t think Joker is necessarily the best character to represent that struggle.

True, I only realized this morning how my comment could be perceived as offensive. I didn’t mean for it to be at all. In my head, I was thinking of portraying Batman as a more complicated character than the way he is normally portrayed.

The way the Wayne’s were portrayed in Joker was interesting to me. Maybe they have good intentions, but their class level and disassociation from the working class of Gotham makes them ignorant to others’ struggles.

The dichotomy I was talking about would work best if we got another sympathetic Joker like Fleck, and the Wayne’s were portrayed as well intentioned but ignorant.

Upon further thought, I think the best approach for a black Joker would likely be to not even play up the racial element. Regardless, Lakeith would make a killer Joker. My preference would be Adam Driver though.

I'm the exact opposite on this, I think if you're going to have a Joker played by a black actor, than it would be a wasted opportunity to not reference race at all. It would just be color blind casting, which is not necessarily bad in itself, but kind of boring. I think there is ground here to do something really interesting and subversive with a black Joker. Because this would be a black man who goes out in public with a white face. The idea, though, is probably too volatile for a mainstream block buster movie, though, and you'd really want a black director/writer tackling the material.

Thinking about this recently and Id honestly say that Adam Driver is my choice for the Joker in the Reeves trilogy.

I love Driver and especially Lakeith, but as unpopular as it is. Id love to See Leto again, as a more accurate straight up Hamill inspired Joker. I know it's unlikely to happen and unimaginative but oh well

I want Stanfield for Two-Face, not Joker.

Driver would work but I still think he fits Scarecrow better.

Driver’s not going to spend most of a movie under a mask again!

Why would you want Lakeith for Dent? Limiting him to either a straight laced Harvey or an angry Two-Face would be a big misuse of his talents.

Why are those two options the only options for the character? He should be dynamic, that’s the point of Two-Face. Eckhart did a great job, but let’s be honest, we didn’t see Two-Face as much as “good guy Harvey” and Two-Face didn’t exactly show both sides of the coin.

I didn’t say Driver would want to play Scarecrow. I just feel like he fits Crane better than Mr. J. I’m sure Scarecrow will be an actor who can take a smaller paycheck.

I mean, those are kinda the key characteristics for Dent / Two-Face. He could do it for sure, I imagine it would be similar to Knives Out (which I also thought he was misused in), but it feels like would be a missed opportunity when he could play a far stranger foe.

Lakeith really wants to play Joker too, he’s been thinking about it for years. I think he would do something really special with the character

I honestly think he'd be as cringe worthy as Leto was. I don't think his versatility is as great as many think it is.

I'm gonna sound even more boring by adding Bill Skarsgard and Evan Peters to that list :hehe:
