The Joker Thread - Part 1

Honestly, I don't even care about the age thing. If they were to cast him, I'd suspend my disbelief. Hell, maybe the digital de-aging process will have advanced enough by the time the Joker appears?

Not suggesting Dafoe for this particular franchise, this is just something I found.
We often focus on his look but I think his voice is really great too.

He's practically a real-life Arkhamverse Joker. Though I do think it's getting a little annoying seeing that fancast all over the internet; it's basically everywhere now. It doesn't excite me as much as it used to but I'd be able to get over my bias fairly quickly if he was cast.

I think the haircut looks nice. It's an interesting take that works for the rest of the design.

I feel like that specific hairstyle is a bit dated. There was a hot minute where I was seeing guys walking around with Boardwalk Empire style haircuts, and it rarely suited any of them. I guess it's not as bad as the man bun or top knots, although at least those haircuts are starting to die out.

I'm assuming you're talking about the Endgame Joker haircut where it's slicked-back and the sides are shaved off??

Eh, I guess the widow's peak makes it look a liiiittle weird from certain angles but I wouldn't mind seeing it in live-action.

If they wanna go more Bolland with his look then I wouldn't really mind. Curly/wavy hair has become trendy lately in my generation. I don't think he needs to look TOO modern but it could work.

I agree that the freshness of a Dafoe's casting has passed.
To be honest, I care less for the Joker casting than for his look. I'm just dying to see something akin to The Man Who Laugh in this new saga...

I think it would just fit with the esthetic they're going for.
Pattinson's Batman is visually a bit reminiscent of Finger and Kane's original Batman, so it would be nice to also go back to the the first Joker ever and the character that inspired it.

Visually I agree Dafoe looks the part.. just probably 10-15 years ago. He is just too old for the role now IMO.

The time to have cast him would have been in the early 2000's around his casting in Spider-Man, his 'last chance' would have been in Nolan's trilogy.

I would love the casting. It never gets old for me. But he would need to be Joker for literally decades in the Reeves universe. Which I wouldn’t mind, if they weren’t doing the Court of Owls for decades/centuries. You’d ask “why would the Court let this guy screw with everyone for that long?”. Cuz at some point Joker can’t help himself.

Which is why I love the idea of CoO being demolished before Joker and the surface level freaks take over. Just makes more sense. So the Joker has to be younger in this trilogy.

I'm sure these have been posted before but sure does look a lot creepier in motion. The device I've read Conrad Veidt had to wear was pretty harsh but this day in age I would think Make-up could come up with something more comfortable for an actor.

But since Reeve's repeatedly said in the Fandome panel that we've never seen these versions of the characters, I'm betting his interpretation of the Joker would be out of left field too.

Well, we've never really had a horror Joker before. This would be a cool reference point.

As long as the Joker still laughs at the things he does I'm good going a more horror minded route. Kinda why I like and bring up Nicholsons Joker, ahem, too much I'm sure. He electrocutes a dude then spends a couple of minutes talking to the smoking corpse before snapping some neck bones and laughing all the way out the door. That's the truest Joker we've ever had on screen. Same way he'd be laughing after beating Jason Todd.

In total fairness, The Man Who Laughs is more of a swashbuckling romance/melodrama than an actual horror movie lol.

^^ I've never seen the film but in trying to find how they did the smile I read the same thing. Now I really need to see this.

I'd really, really love a more horror-oriented take on Joker. Think something akin to his look in the Serious House On Serious Earth graphic novel minus the over-the-top hair.

Also on my imaginary wish list that Matt Reeves will never see...I know Ayer/Leto were trying to go for something original but I would never want to see the Joker just casually hangin around in a club again. I've always thought that when the Joker enters any room, especially a club, people would run as fast as they could to the exits.

I get that they were trying to draw influence from the graphic novel 'Joker' with the nightclub and all that, but it didn't quite work here.

I DO love the idea of everyone wanting to stay as far away from him as possible though.

They can vaguely imply that he's immortal; maybe he can even play with that idea by screwing with some people for fun

"He don't shake hands"

He says to describe a character usually depicted with an electric/poisonous joybuzzer

I think they were trying to go for a vain superiority complex but it didn't land as well as they'd hoped.

I thought Leto's Joker was terrible, but I can see that Ayer and Leto wanted a different take on the character and didn't want to just copy or emulate what came before.

My issue with Leto's Joker is he came off as a pretender to me. Like a rock star who thought Joker was cool and tried to model himself after him but looks ridiculous in doing so.

And while I appreciated Joaquin Phoenix's performance, there's virtually no correlation at all between his Joker and the one in the comics, other than maybe the failed standup comedian element.
