The Dark Knight The Man Who Laughs: The Joker Thread 2.0

Personally, I think Edward Norton would make a good joker. (Note: Primal Fear)

^Mark did such a great job with that story. I love it everytime I read it

Who did you enjoy more as The Joker?

I grew up with Batman 1989 and Jack Nicholson as The Joker, but recently seeing The Dark Knight I ended up enjoying Heath Ledgers role so much more. Alot of people, although I disagree say that Jack Nicholson plays Jack Nicholson, not The Joker in Batman 1989, because he kind of acts the same in other movies he is in, but I doubt anyone will say the same thing for Heath Ledger as everything from his movements, to his eyes and voice were 100% what The Joker would be. You start to forget your watching Heath Ledger as soon as you see the opening scene. And his performance is extremely memorable and legendary. Michael Cain even said that Heath Ledger's Joker was the greatest villain in cinema history. That is saying alot, especially since its someone as legendary as Michael Cain.

So what is your opinion on who you enjoyed more as The Joker?

Remember that day I told you about when people would stop comparing Ledger to Nicholson? Its coming...

First off, if you disagree with this subject, don't try your hardest to get it closed, deleted or as pathetic as it sounds.. moved, because that is just stupid, slack and extremely childish. If you believe that you cannot choose, then just say so, don't go out of your way to get the thread closed or deleted just because YOU and YOUR opinion disagree with the subject. In the end, the people who complain about how these threads always lead to fights and always gets closed are the people who always star the fights and cause the threads to get closed. The previous one is proof of that.

Nathan, if you want to have that discussion so badly...make it in the non-spoilers or misc. Batman films.

Please don't clutter up this thread.

Thats a bit hypocritical coming from you, isn't it?

Don't take thread closings personally. There's more to life than threads on the Hype. Your anger gives you great power but if you let it, it will destroy you like it almost did me.

No. The difference is this thread has substance and a purpose.

Threads for Comparing Nicholson and Ledger will NEVER have either...

Oh no.. People can completely spam and derail my thread, but when I jokingly mention that it is hypocritical with what they say, it suddenly means I'm the worst person in the world... My bad

That's your opinion, and your opinion is not law..

It is when Hunter Rider lays down the law on the threads you started.

You don't don't mess with Hunter Rider - cuz when u mess with him....you get the horns.

but anyway...

It's not hypocritical for me to ask you not to post your crap in here.

Why?

Because said crap was locked...TWICE. Thusly, you don't need to be peddling it on here.

Um...what's the current area of discussion here?

Um...what's the current area of discussion here?

Heath Ledger's performance as the Joker and how it pertains to your observations and preferences of the Joker as a character.

Pay no attention to Nathan.

The only thing I'd advise that you try to NOT do is put down any previous incarnation of the character in your discussions of Ledger.

I agree with you CFE, you can't really compare the performances as they live in different universes. Nicholson's performance works really well in Burton's Gotham, as does Romero's performance in the TV show's Gotham. I think if you wanted to compare them you'd have to put them in the same Gotham, which would not work at all, but would probably be pretty funny.

haha Im glad Nathan Petrelli is gone for a little while, he caused alot of rukus!

Thanks Bob,

And yeah that's it exactly.

But man...I'm already dreading the threads to come for BB3. Comparing BB3's potential Riddler to Jim or potential Catwoman to Michelle...*groan*

But anyway on topic...I'm very excited to see Ledger's portrayal a few times this weekend. It seems like all the hype was not in vein, which sounds terrific. I'm sure his Joker is a perfect addition to Nolan's take on the Batman mythos.

Nicholson was betrayed by the permanent grin. You can say he was comic accurate but The Joker doesn't smile all the time. What was Burton thinking? I still can't get my head around the stupidity of it. Did he not watch The Shining? Jack Nicholson is brilliant! And he made him look like a clown, and not the right kind either.
So much of it works, his voice, his upper facial features, his costume bar the tie. And yet we get a permanent grin and a magic gun capable of shooting down the Batplane!
Now, Heath Ledger may well be better than Nicholson. I'm expecting that and it seems to be the case. But if you were to take Ledger's Joker and take him back to 1989 it would work better than Nicholson's. And the reason why is because Ledger could emote with his whole face.
He can deliver lines like "Kill the Batman" and not have to worry about looking stupid. But poor Jack Nicholson, remember the whole "Wait til they get a load of me" line? We see his eyes, pure evil and malice. And then, oh wait, he's still smiling.
It's not powerful, it's not clever and it takes away from several great moments. And when you see the guy acting his heart out you realise was a bad move it was on the part of Burton.
Seriously, if they make a Dark Knight Returns maybe they shoud get Nicholson back and set things right.

So I've got a question, which do you prefer, Jack Ncholson or Heath Ledgers... shade of purple?

To me Nicholsons shade of purple is just purple being purple and Heath's is far more realistic and gritty.

I likes the darker purple of Ledger's Joker.
