Neither of which is true. They are all great interpretations of the character and very comic book accurate, it's just that some interpretations have more of an emphasis on different periods of the comics than others. We Batman fans have been extremely lucky, since I don't think any other comic book character (except possibly Superman) has had such a wide range of talented actors depicting these iconic characters. To bash any of them seems... well.. ungrateful? Heath and Mark are my favorite Jokers, but that doesn't mean that I can't recognize what Jack and Cesar brought to the character.

Okay, what exactly did Romero bring to the character? Did he have any merits whatsoever?

He errr had a moustache and a pink suit . . .

Oh, and at one point he even made his own utility belt :)

Of course! The guy embodied the Joker of the 50's and 60's. He couldn't have been any more accurate to those comics if he tried. :D How can you not love this guy?

Okay.. so he might not be very threatening... but he's funny!

He portayed the campy prankster Joker of the golden age era of Batman. One of the many interpretations Joker has gone thru over the years.

That's what Romero brought to the character. It's like Julie Newmar's Catwoman, who showed the version Catwoman who had gangs of henchmen back in the day. A different take on the character.

Well, no. Unfortunately it's more like they act as if they never said them.

Haha, yeah. I couldn't resist bumping and quoting posts from older threads, it was too tempting.

does anyone watch samurai jack? i've just see a episode and Aku and the Joker are very similer, they are agents of chaos. Hes like a accient japanese devil, all he wants is to cause death and chaos similer to Joker. They are just evil incarnate.

For some strange reason, I wouldn't describe the Joker as 'evil'. Sadistic, yes, but pure evil incarnate? No.

OK let me ask all you guys this. Am I the only one really really annoyed by the Hot Topic crowds obsession with the joker? I have a friend who's a chubby goth and is obsessed by the dark knight and she has joker stuff everywhere on her walls and her myspace just everywhere, so I say well if you like the joker then check this out and I hand her a copy of the killing joke and she says eww I hate comic books those are for nerds......I'm moderatley enraged in seeing the bastdardization of my favorite comic book villian. Am I alone in my frustration?

How counterproductive of your friend, lol.

When Joker was crying "HIT ME!" why do you think he was getting so angry? I've thought about his reaction a lot and he seems really rattled when he gets out of the truck, especially when he starts shooting at anything that moves, and it just gets worse when he sees Batman coming towards him.

I think you're looking too into it, I don't see his reaction like that. He was getting anxious, he was anticipating what the Batman was going to do; he intrigues him.

It boggles my mind this even has to be written. How can you possibly be fans of the characters and not appreciate the history that made them iconic and long-lasting in the first place? Unbelievable.

That was a great video you posted, I enjoyed it.

Favoritism. Example -- Just ask any Superman fan what they think of any actor who isn't Christopher Reeve.

Romero played a Joker that was silly and fun, in the same way that Adam West played a Batman of that type. The performance was not that bad in that respect, and does have some merit for the reason that a part of The Joker is always silly and fun, albeit in a horribly subversive way.

Imagine watching Cesar Romero goofing around in his costume, and then battering Robin to death with a crowbar. Not so funny anymore, eh?

Considering the tone of that series, I'd still say it would come off as playful and comedic. :o

It's more than anxiety though. He only loses control of himself one other time and that's when talking to the fake Batman. I know it's a cliche but in The Dark Knight there was a certain method to his madness. It's even true in the comics to some extent.
So to see him shooting random cars and screaming at Batman to kill him was a stunning moment.

You know, I get that Romero was campy and fun and yes, it was amusing. I'll even admit that this version of The Joker, as a playful petty criminal, is faithful to the character. On any given day he could act like Romero's version. Rather than killing everyone he may just hide some guy in a dustbin or throw jumping beans at someone to get out of paying for stuff.
But when the whole tone of the show mimicks this attitude I find it difficult to see many merits to Romero's version. Without the gim, determined Batman to fight against The Joker loses his punchline.
If in this new movie Joker asked Batman "Why so serious?" and Bale then started dancing some saucy disco number the whole rivalry would lose its impact. Because there is a weak link in the chain.
Adam Wests Batman was that weak link because he was just as kooky as the guys he was fighting. And not in a "I'm the Goddamn Batman" way either. More like "I get stoned on the weekends and this is the result".
If Batman doesn't work then The Joker doesn't work. Simple as that.

How can Hamill's Joker be better than Jack's? For Gods sake, in TAS they had The Joker using giant robots. I still wish we had a decent Batman TV series that didn't pull too many punches.

Well it was aimed at children, you know.

Very true but aspects of it were still overdone. Giant robots, the Riddler taunting Batman through a giant TV set, The Joker escaping Arkham on a rocket Christmas tree.
We never got things that bad in Burton's films.
