The Dark Knight The Man Who Laughs: The Joker Thread 2.0

Sorry, kinda on another topic but something didn't make sense.

When the Joker and talking to Two Face at the hospital he says "Nobody panics when the expected people got killed. Nobody panics when things go according to plan, even if the plans are horrifying. If I tell the press that tomorrow a gangbanger will get shot, or a truckload of soldiers will get blown up, nobody panics. But when I say one little old mayor will die, everyone loses their minds!! " what is the difference between gangbanger/soldiers dying and the mayor dying? How does it introduce anarchy? Or is it that he says tomorrow with the gangbanger/soldiers and doesn't with the mayor?
He's saying that people expect gangbangers and soldiers to get hurt because of what they do. It isn't all that much of a surprise.

Now, if your city's mayor is slated to die, that's something completely different, because he's supposed to be "safe."

Now don't get me wrong...I love this film!! The deep philosophical rants really interested me and it was a grade-A film.
However...the Joker seems to contradict himself sometimes:
"I'm not a schemer...I hate schemers!"
Did he not do an awful lot of scheming to set all his dastardly plans in motion? All of the explosive planting..the bank heist..the assassination attempt all took very thoughtful and careful...um..scheming often months in advance. The Joker may actually be the most scheming of all the film's characters.
"I am an agent of chaos..introduce a little anarchy"
The Joker believes so much in blatant chaos and no rules, but follows his careful plan to create said anarchy. Are there rules to making and planting explosives? The Joker essentially followed rules to later break them. But then it comes down to your definition of anarchy. Whether it's complete running around killing, or if it takes time. I'm rambling.
Debate!!
And...here...we...go!!
hahhahahahhahh hahahahaha

hahahhahahahahhahahahahahaha. come on....................... :o

i understand that not everyone on this world understand who joker is.since not everyone is a comicbook fan. but if you after TDK didnt undertstand who the joker is then i guess TDK was to complicated for you.

I think the Joker was complicated for him. That's a sign that (S)laughter 99 is perfectly sane. I say he does NOT belong on SHH. :oldrazz:

look i dont want to insult. but this way waayy over the top. he opened a thread about joker being a hypocrit. noooo really? joker lying? get out of here.

there were at least 5 big obvious examples in the movie that joker is not ....FAIR. soooooooooo please....

I mean if you're a psycho killer, sadist, masochist, and liar (two different origin stories that contradict), what's a big surprise about also being hypocritical? That's like pointing out that his eye-socket paint got smeered. It's so... OBVIOUS... and hardly noteworthy in face of the other things going on.

Gangbangers and soldiers die every day, and no one blinks an eye, because that's what's "supposed" to happen to them. You send soldiers off to war, some of them are going to die, that's part of the plan.

But when Joker introduces a little anarchy by threatening to kill someone like the Mayor, someone who's not "supposed" to die, then people panic.

its a little to scarecrowish......... :)

i think TDK joker was nice balance between a ''clown'' and a serial killer.

agreed on the 'scarecrowish' comment. the concept art looks killer for a movie completely unrelated to batman...the bottom left i might have actually enjoyed, its not too off from the comics. TDKR had a lipstick-less Joker and I didn't mind that either so it could have potentially worked. Also like the purple suit on the bottom right. just glad we got we what we got...now what I'm interested in seeing is concept art for all of the characters, Ra's, Scarecrow, Alfred, Gordon...the works. I'm sure they exist I just feel like we're never going to see them. Nolan seems a bit...i dunno iffy about supplemental material?

I can't really imagine that the fist design would work for a character that is meant to inspire anything more poignant than pure revulsion. It's a very striking design, but it's difficult to see how Heath could have brought so much weight to the "I'm not a monster" monologue in Dent's hospital room, if acting from behind a face that is quite so warped and ruined.

That's if we're to assume Joker is on the same wavelength as us, to what a monster is defined to be.

I don't think anyone would really consider Nicholson's Joker to be an auteur either, despite the character's claims.

I like the "I'm not a monster. I'm just ahead of the curve." Reminds me of that whole super sanity concept.

Good point, I had forgotten about those lines from Arkham Asylum. They actually work better when The Joker is analysing himself.

I liked Joker's auteurish self characterization, a sort of 'dada Joker' rather than Ledger's philosopher nihilist, but it wasn't expanded enough, the themes and characters didn't lock together as well as TDK.

I kind of want the Joker to return because it's hard to think they could ever keep him locked up at Arkham. Then again, I don't want someone to try and imitate what Heath did. If they're gonna get someone who's going to try their own version, cool. but if he's going to only imitate Heath leave this Joker alone.

Thanks. I was a little  about that too.

Honestly, The Joker recast threads/post bothers me for one single reason if anything -- ITS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN. So why bother? Seriously, how is the actor having any freedom or creative input in this situation? They're going to have to act as another actor's Joker.

^haha thats quality. i was thinking maybe another trait that seems plausible to this joker is of like a sexual deviant. obviously not like a full blown perv or rapist but like a cheeky comical way. maybe in the interrogation scene "hey bats that assistant D.A, oooh i know what i'd like to do to her! nudge nudge, wink wink!" then that sets batman off!

Ehhhh...can't picture it. Sounds kind of corny to me. He's much more subtle than that.

The Joker (in The Dark Knight) is asexual. He may or may not engage in sexual acts, but I don't see him enjoying it so much so as your average joe. I think he's self conscious about his face, and would be somewhat uncomfortable. (We only get to see a barely 10 second glimpse of his face during the scene where he dresses up as a police officer, don't ask me why but the look on his face, it was just amazing). And by uncomfortable I don't mean embarrassed. I know al ot of people won't agree with me because ZOMGG THE JOKER IS BAD AZZ HE IZ NOT TEH VULNERABLE TO NE THING!!!!!!!!1 But he is human. He surpresses some of his feelings.

ITT we state someharsh truths:

Johnny Depp has been playing the same role for all of his recent movies.

What was Captain Jack doing in Sweeney Todd? Thats some poor acting there Mr Depp.

Seriously, Everyone wants Depp in every movie.

Overrated.

Get a real Actor, not a random popular one.

Johnny Depp didn't get "popular" UNTIL Pirates of the Caribbean. The Disney film shot him up to mainstream. Before then, he wasn't considered just a 'random popular actor'. To say that Johnny Depp isn't a real actor ...wow, just wow. That is beyond me. I don't expect you to be a huge fan but that's just ridiculous.

I understand he chooses plays a lot of eccentric characters, but they're no way shape or form the same. Speaking of, he'll be playing the Mad Hatter in 'Alice in Wonderland' film slated for 2010. Guess who the director is?

No really, guess. [BLACKOUT]Tim Burton, who else?[/BLACKOUT]

Don't flame me but I'd like to see Ryan Gosling as The joker. He's very talented and an oscar nom actor. He potrays a serial killer in murder by the numbers, and a disturbed but lovable person in lars & the real girl.I think if the role would pass to someone new,i would to see another rising and upcoming actor.I already saw johny depp in chocholate factory,a character which resembled joker(purple suit, pale face, sick smile) so i'll pass.

You're not seriously saying that Willy Wonka is a similiar character to The Joker because of his fashion sense, are you?

I think you are right about him having some feelings and suppressing them. That was how I interpreted it in the meeting with the crime bosses when Gambol called him crazy and he said "No, I'm not." It was like, on some level, that hit a nerve and irritated him. Maybe it was just that they weren't being respectful of him, but whatever the reason there has to be some feeling underneath it to make him react that way.

The Joker as portrayed in the comics is kind of asexual, right? I don't think him and Harley are portrayed as having a fantastic sex life. But what's weird is that - at least the Joker in the "Dark Knight" - is portrayed as a pretty straight-up psychopath, and one of the traits of a psychopath is deviant sexual behavior or an extreme sexual appetite. (Someone posted the description of a psychopath in one of the Harvey Dent threads). So I don't know. There was something very sexually charged about him, yet the movie didn't really explore it. I can't see him as the kind of guy that would have a long-term relationship, that's for sure! And if he is interested in sex, it would be in a very sadistic way. Then again, maybe he's just too busy for it. Maybe he gets more satisfaction from blowing things up. :cwink:

There are points in the comics where I wonder if Joker admires Batman or if it's something more. I once came across a thread that had posts throughout his time in the books, not taken out of context, that could definitely insinuate an actual attraction to Bruce. He's been known to call him "lover" on more than one occasion. I think the entire "skirting on intent" angle actually works for the greater view on his character; at the end of the day, it's very unclear exactly what his intentions are. The love/hate relationship being taken to extremes is covered in the film, the comics, and just about any Batman media worth its snuff, so it's not just conjecture.

Lets all go see The Dark Knight one more time this weekend and pay respect to the great Heath Ledger. He will be deeply miss. I just bought two tickets for the IMAX Saturday in Houston,Texas.

It's so hard to think that this:

He looks good. Very handsome man he was. I love his voice, I never knew it was so deep until I watched a few of his interviews (this was before his death).
