The Mass Effect Hype Thread

Because they might as well have just made KotOR 2. They made a new IP, Jade Empire, to do something new, but ended up making it exactly the same, minus real-time fighting, which was horrifically done.

I mean, it was a good game, but I was expecting the next Shenmue, not the next KotOR.

The fighting wasn't horrifically done, the focus was just on switching styles rather than long combo's within each style. And why would you expect the game to be the next Shenmue? Because they were both "asian"?

No, because the announcement video basically made it look that way. The eventual story had nothing to do with revenge, or even Furious Ming's ability to crack rocks.

The eventual story had everything to do with revenge, did you even play the game? And the announcement video didn't look anything like Shenmue, the only thing in common was that they both had a dojo in some capacity. Jade Empire didn't fail you, you failed Jade Empire :(

No, Jade Empire promised an interesting main character wi... *breaks into tears* I just wanted Shenmue 3, okay? I was young and hopeful *sniffle* I didn't mean to make Jade Empire a rebound game *snort* things just went so fast and *gulp* one thing lead to another! *runs of screaming*

Jade Empire was fantastic (and has a sequel in the works, go to Bioware's website and under games there is "unannounced next gen game" that is 100% likely to be it, rejoice Gamera!), and Mass Effect will be the rapture. All is well.

Okay, hopefully Bioware learns stuff from Pandemic, like how to make an open world and how to make a fighting engine, so that I can enjoy the game instead of walking down paths.

They said they've learned lots from each other. Pandemic's learning story delivery and character development, while Bioware's learning about how to make larger worlds and pick-up-and-play game mechanics.

Oh wait, Pandemic merged with them or something didn't they? Oh, nevermind. But Pandemic learns from Bioware, not the other way around. Bioware has nothing left to learn

You N'Wah. Just look how great Mass Effect is! Yes, I know they were well into it before the merge, but I bet the sequels are better. And JE2 will probably be better too.

All the Mass Effect games are going to be instantly perfect, and yet still improve with each release

I bet Mass Effect 1 will have some kind of stupid little problem that isn't fixed until three, like weapon selection irritations or something.

I can't wait to see more of this at X06, they need to do another huge gameplay walkthrough video like they did at E3, or better yet, give us a "first hour of the game" demo to hold me over until Febuary.

I'd love to play this game. I really wish this made 2006, but oh well. I have Gears of War, SplinterCell, Superman Returns, and other games, which hopefully include Too Human, to hold me over.

My most wanted game is Superman though, so all else will fall into place after that happens.

Gears of War, Splinter Cell, Too Human....and you're most wanted is Superman? :(

But yeah, I wish this had made 2006 as well. I shouldn't have been so optimistic, I knew that developers never make release dates anymore :(

I'm sorry, but Superman just does so much for me, and it's a freeroaming game where you can be Superman!

Gears of War and Too Human are about tied. SplinterCell will be good but it's not going to be Gears of War exciting!

Yeah, anyways, moving away from all the ****** in that post...

Wikipedia said:
In response to a query by 1UP.com, Project Manager Casey Hudson explained the term 'Mass Effect' as follows:

"Inside the game universe, mass effect is a newly-discovered (for humans anyway) physics phenomenon that has properties along the lines of other physics forces such as gravity and electromagnetism. It's what physicists in real life are currently calling "dark energy," as an explanation for the accelerating expansion of the universe -- which has only recently been discovered and flies in the face of the previous notion that the universe's expansion should be slowing down because of gravity."[2]

Thus, mass effect is possibly akin to the theorized fifth force.

In the same article, Hudson explains that certain beings are able to sense and manipulate mass effect much like some real-life creatures (such as sharks and eels) can sense and manipulate electromagnatism. These abilities will be augmentable via implants, and the manipulation of mass effect is referred to as 'Biotics'.
I'm glad to have seen that, I always wondered what the game's title was for

In real life medicine, "Mass Effect" is when flesh is displaced by an object, like water bloating or a brain tumor. Because of this, I thought the game's title was suggesting a story about brain implants or just anything cybernetic, considering the game's style.

But it may be both. I mean, there IS a doctor working at Bioware.

So which shooting method would you prefer in this game
A more RPG style (like Deus Ex), where how accurate you are/can be and how damage you can cause is directly tied into your equipment and character skills.

Or a more FPS style (like Halo), where how accurate you are depends much more on player skill rather than character skill, and the damage is flat and not effected by character development.

I personally hope they go with the first model, RPGs are about character development/character skills, but it's an action RPG so I know the second model could make it in as well. I'm sure there are those who would prefer stuff like that, but I hate seeing it, it's just another way RPGs are getting watered down for the Madden crowd.

I would also prefer the first option.

I believe SplinterCell, Rainbox Six, and Ghost Recon have shown developers that the Deus Ex method can work in an action game, and to a great effect.

It would not only give the game more depth, but it would also make each players experience different, which is what Bioware usually tries to aim for anyways, so it makes sense.

I'll be happy either way, but I believe the Deus Ex way works better.

I just hope that with all these "action RPGs" (Jade Empire 2, Mass Effect 1-3, Unannounced FPRPG) that Bioware ports over Dragon Age or something as well. Action RPGs are great games, but I still prefer the real thing.

I would prefer the first option, I want the satisfaction of levelling my characters properly and using the right strategy to take down a rancor, not just using my fast trigger finger to break the game, which is what I think can easilly happen when you swing an "action RPG" too far to the action sie of things.
