Square Enix Filing Lawsuit Against SNK To Defend Against Copyright Infringement Accusations. October 8, 2014 . 3:24am

Back in August, SNK Playmore filed a lawsuit against Square Enix, accusing the company of using SNK characters without permission. Now, Square are fighting back.

Back in August, SNK Playmore filed a lawsuit against Square Enix, accusing the company of using SNK characters without permission in a manga they publish in Japan. Titled High Score Girl, the manga is about arcade gaming and features various videogame characters.

Today, Square Enix announced that they are filing a lawsuit against SNK Playmore in their own defense, as they feel they have not infringed on any copyrights.

“Getting accused of the criminal complaint, the Company has decided to bring the said lawsuit to seek a declaratory judgment that the Company does not infringe the Defendant’s copyright,” a statement from Square Enix reads. “The Company will prove the point through civil procedures.”

The statement adds: “The Company has been cooperating fully with police investigations since the domiciliary search, and will continuously maintain the cooperative stance with good faith.”

NYCC 2014 Hands-On: Final Fantasy Type-0 HD
Published 8 hours ago. 29 comments.

We go hands on with the updated version of Type-0.
FFT0HD-NYCC14-Hands-On.jpg

I played Final Fantasy Type-0 HD earlier this week.
Square Enix held a media-only Comic-Con event in New York, where I got to go hands-on with the game for the first time. And it’s not your traditional Final Fantasy, as I’m sure readers following the game already know. It’s faster, more violent, and more mature in comparison.
A little background: unlike previous Final Fantasy titles, which generally feature a single protagonist, Final Fantasy Type-0 HD has 14 protagonists. The story revolves around a war between nations, and the 14 students of “Class Zero” make up the game’s heroes. Being of an elite military academy, these students are sent into war to uncover the secrets of its origin and to subdue the enemy.
As one might tell by its title, this is the high-definition version of Final Fantasy Type-0, which was first announced as Final Fantasy Agito XIII for mobile phones in 2006. In January 2011, its name was changed to Final Fantasy Type-0 and development was moved to PSP. Later that year, the game finally launched in Japan. But the PSP release never made its way outside the country. There was a time where it was planned, but given the dying PSP market in the west, those plans were ultimately put to rest.
But now, with the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One generation in its infancy, Square Enix has the opportunity to bring the game to western audiences on a bigger screen. And luckily, it’s not your standard high-definition remaster. The game looks great, as if it were completely remade for new consoles, albeit with a few lower-resolution textures here and there (character faces don’t always look so hot).
It’s very fast-paced and action-based. Battles aren’t turn-based like previous Final Fantasy titles. And enemy encounters are on the map, rather than in a separate battle screen. Players can move around freely and attacks are mapped to the face buttons. Square is your standard attack, while the remaining three face buttons are special attacks like Thunder, Blizzard, or Ensnare. You can also perform directional dodges using the X button and analog stick.
Players will assemble a party of three characters from the class of 14 and switch between them on the fly during battle using the d-pad. My party consisted of Seven, Rem, and Ace. The demo had me running about an industrial area, which was swarmed with robot enemies. For these encounters, Rem was my best choice, as she had access to Thunder magic, which machine-based enemies are weak against. During another point, I found myself up against enemy soldiers on the ground, while rooftop snipers were firing away. As not to waste Magic Points, I found it best to switch to Ace. His standard attack uses a deck of cards, which can be flung at the snipers from the ground. Ace also has the handy ability to erect a wall for defense when dealing his long-range attacks.
During battle, you’ll sometimes see a yellow marker or red marker appear on the enemy. When a yellow marker appears, if you attack the enemy then and there, it can deal critical damage, sometimes paralyzing them. When a red marker appears, again if you attack then and there, it will kill the enemy in a single hit.
Sometimes you’ll come across an enemy group with a leader among them. The leader is marked with a special symbol next to its name and health bar. In these situations, you can opt to take out the leader first, which will cause the rest of the group will surrender. After that, you can talk to the surrendered enemies to obtain rations. Of course, you can also choose not to take this route and instead take the kills for more experience points.
During my playthrough, I encountered a number of enemies ranging from mecha to animals to soldiers to flying ships, walls, and golems. And to defeat these enemies, knowing when to use which party member is crucial. You also have the option to summon a monster like Ifrit, which would K.O. the player character, but I unfortunately forgot to test this out during my playthrough (sorry!).
I enjoyed what I played of Final Fantasy Type-0 HD, but if there was anything that bothered me, it was the camera. Its auto lock-on feature is kind of wonky, and I found myself dying most of the time as a result of the camera backing into the screen, allowing enemies to sneak in cheap hits. The free movement the right analog stick offers also feels rather blocky compared to the more fluid movement one would expect. Hopefully this is something that’s fixed by the time the game is launched.
Also, because I heard some people talking about this (it’s not a bother, but I feel obliged to mention it), areas are not seamlessly connected. They’re instead tied together by short, three- or four-second load screens. And in addition to the mission-based areas featured in the demo, I was told there will be an overworld with towns and such to visit, as well. (I’m sure those who’ve played or seen the PSP game already know this.)
If you’ve yet to watch it, you can see a walkthrough of the demo I played here.
Final Fantasy Type-0 HD is due out for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on March 17 in North America and March 19 in Europe.

New Final Fantasy Type-0 HD Video Shows Orience At War. October 29, 2014 . 1:12am

Final Fantasy Type-0 HD is set in a war torn world where you lead Class Zero, a group of students from an elite military academy, after a neighboring country attacks their home. The story was influenced by director Hajime Tabata’s love for history and if you’re wondering why kids were sent out to save the world Siliconera asked him about that.

When bringing Final Fantasy Type-0 to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, Tabata tweaked the game’s combat, but had to remove the multiplayer missions. Square Enix is working on a feature to replace the sleep mode leveling system from the PSP version too.

Final Fantasy Type-0 HD comes out on March 17, 2015 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Pre-orders from select retailers will include a code to download a Final Fantasy XV demo.

Final Fantasy Agito + For PlayStation Vita Delayed. October 31, 2014 . 12:15am

While the initial release date for Final Fantasy Agito + was set for January 15, 2015, Square Enix found technical issues and have changed its release date to TBA for the time being.

A problem with Final Fantasy Agito +, a port of the smartphone gamefor PS Vita, has delayed the game, Square Enix said. While the initial release date was set for January 15, 2015, Square Enix found technical issues and have changed its release date to TBA for the time being.

Due to the delay, they promise that they’ll fix the problem and work on improving the overall quality of the game

While there they don’t have an estimated release window for the upcoming PlayStation Vita port, Square Enix say that they’ll do everything they can to promptly decide on a new release date, along with some more information on a limited edition version of the game.

Additionally, it appears that Final Fantasy VII G-Bike is having issues as well, according to Square Enix.

Update: Square Enix have acknowledged the G-Bike issues.

Final Fantasy Type-0 Director Would Like To Continue The Series. November 4, 2014 . 8:24am

“I would like to make more Type games and make them into a Final Fantasy series,” says Final Fantasy Type-0 director Hajime Tabata.

Final Fantasy Type-0 director Hajime Tabata has revealed that the game will retain its Japanese theme song, “ZERO,” by Bump of Chicken, in the West.

Speaking with Square Enix Europe staff, Tabata confirmed that the song—which supposedly ties heavily into the game—will remain in the English version, and will have subtitled lyrics so that fans can tell what it means.

“It’s a really good song and we thought it’d be best to keep the original appeal and impact of it for the fans,” said Tabata. “We discussed it with Bump of Chicken and the final verdict is that we’re going to keep the original Japanese version as it is, included in the European version too.”

“That’s what all the members of Bump of Chicken agreed on so that’s what we decided to do. Obviously there will be subtitles for the lyrics of the song so you can understand its meaning.”

Tabata also says he’d like to continue the Type series of games if this first one is successful, and points out that Square Enix have already filed trademarks for more games under the “Type” brand.

“I would like to make more Type games and make them into a Final Fantasy series. We’ve registered trademarks for it, we’ve gone that far so we want to continue it,” Tabata said. “I’d like to make the Type series the kind of series where we can do the kind of stuff that we really can’t do in the mainline numbered series, so make it a really alternative kind of Final Fantasy.”

What kind of things would Tabata like to do? Well, in an interview with Siliconera earlier this year, he told us all about how he’s fond of history and would like to implement that fondness in a future Final Fantasy game—particularly history surrounding the American Civil War. Perhaps he’ll get the chance to do that someday.

It Took Two Years To Recreate Final Fantasy VII In LittleBigPlanet. November 19, 2014 . 11:00am

One fan spent the past two years recreating Final Fantasy VII in LittleBigPlanet, and now it’s finished.

[YT]L2l9yH0TXsY[/YT]
Jamie Colliver has spent the past two years recreating Final Fantasy VII in LittleBigPlanet. Not it’s finished and playable in LittleBigPlanet 3 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation Vita. You can also play it in LittleBigPlanet 2 on PS3.

Eurogamer caught up with Colliver who told them that the entire Final Fantasy VII story and its side missions have been fitted into 31 LittleBigPlanet levels.

“I already have a battle system with Limit Breaks in place, every cut-scene/dialogue, all five material types using creatinators, all of the soundtrack, every character, boss, enemies and a world map.”, Colliver said.

You can see loads of videos (over one hundred) on Colliver’s YouTube channel that document his recreation’s progress over the past two years. You can also watch a trailer above for Colliver’s LittleBigPlanet recreation of Final Fantasy VII.

So, the whole Shinra thing is more like a PlayStation Now service than a subscription based service? Well, that is disappointing.

so should we expect anything XV related at the big Sony event this weekend?

when that's said I or someone else will put that up

There's only been one translation of FFVII that I'm aware of.

Can't help but get a kick out of this troll move on Square's part. The reaction makes me wonder how mad people will really get when a full remake finally comes for either a handheld or mobile.

man......Square's really trolling us.........lol.
