Ant-Man The Official Ant-Man News and Speculation Thread - Part 9

It's certainly a "redeeming quality", I would think. He might not have been the most developed character (did he need to be?), but he certainly had charisma.

I felt it was a fair question based on the posts of yours that I have seen, and I made a point to not sound rude because I know it could come off that way. I wasn't trying to step on any toes. I'm sorry if it came off that way.

Would you personally consider Luis to be an offensive stereotype?
Speaking of this, there was an interview with T.I. I saw not to long ago that I watched. He described his character to the interviewer (a car-stealing ex-con), who then asked if he found this to be offensive given T.I.'s status as a known convict, and an African American. T.I. basically rolled his eyes at the question. I have to say I agree with that sentiment.
I'd pay no mind to what he has to say in an MCU thread as he's more of an X-Men guy anyways. He's a serial Debbie Downer and nitpicker in MCU threads so he rarely has anything worthwhile to a conversation.

I'm really curious to see which heroes they might add in the future. Especially since they say they have plans until 2030 something.

One of those characters would/should be Janet Van Dyne. Look Hope is the Wasp now, but when her time is up, is when you can have Scott finally find Janet in the Micro-verse. Marvel is looking for characters to use in the future, correct, well Janet is alive and still young. It makes too much sense not to happen.

Luis was offensive in that he was a poorly written character with few redeeming qualities, period. Not because he was a certain racial stereotype.
Michael Pena based the character off a real guy he knew he knows.

LOL Pena had more to do then the hacker or the driver for sure....hell he did more than Hope

Ugh......glad to hear from someone from the what was wrong with Ant-Man thread.:o

Evidently most people don't agree with this as evidenced by the box office numbers. I've seen it 3 times. Once on opening day, then with my wife, and lastly I took my mother to see it (She's Latina). Both my wife and mother had the same reaction BEFORE the movie (Ant-Man?? Uh.....well, okay.). After the movie, it was an entirely different reaction (That was a really fun movie. I loved it.). After I got my mom home, she called my aunt and told her how much fun she had. My aunt's reaction was "I didn't think it would be that good. Ant-Man isn't a very good name for a movie."

Does anyone want to guess why I think the box office numbers weren't higher? It sure wasn't because of Michael or Paul.

I don't mean morally redeeming. I mean in terms of character-specific traits that make them particuarly unique. I'm talking about the quality of the writing. And I didn't say "none". I said "Few".

He was clearly not a horrible human being. His saving the guard didn't come as a surprise. Heck, it would have been more interesting if he had been someone less interested in the fate of security guards/cops and ended up having a change of heart. But the moment was played as a bumbler almost forgetting he tied a guy up in a dangerous situation. For laughs.

Almost any character could have been put in the plot-device position of punching out and then saving the guard. I don't find his use in this regard particularly interesting. The most interesting thing about his character was his "telephone-style memory", and even that wasn't that great.

Split hairs much? You're funny. i like you. :yay:

Were BAT, actually. :yay:

OK. Then when the sun goes down......even better.

EDIT: Oh....I get it. Gotham City...BAT. Wrong kind of BAT. You aren't going to be as much help as I thought you were. :cwink:

It's pretty clear (or leas to me) that the combination of the name/concept kept some of the potential audience at bay. I was convinced that would be the case when the movie was announced it was going into production.

Literally everyone I talked to said essentially the same thing "Ant-Man? Really?" or something very close to that. I keep wondering about a sequel. I think it's WAY too early to predict which movies will or won't get a standalone sequel and it's going to depend on several factors.

Box Office popularity
How the sequel will fit into setting the stage for future MCU
How popular the character is in Civil and Infinity Wars
Other???

Maybe if there's a next time they can pull a Captain America can call it Ant-Man: (Fill in the blank). Heck, maybe they should have done that this time.

I thought Luis was really funny and I liked him. I think he would be funny guy to hang around with.

If Wright was still behind the camera it wouldn't have made any more or any less. He's not exactly box office gold, he does his own ****.

Peyton Reed Says Rick Moranis Almost Cameoed In ‘Ant-Man’

http://uproxx.com/gammasquad/2015/07/ant-man-rick-moranis-cameo/

Even though Marvel’s Ant-Man hit theaters a little over a week ago, the Disney-fueled media machine is still churning out packaged bits of marketing to embolden the superhero cinematic empire. Hence director Peyton Reed’s interview with Screen Junkies‘ YouTube channel, in which he discusses several bits of trivia about the film’s production, as well as where Paul Rudd’s Scott Lang may end up in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Perhaps the most interesting bit of news came in the form of veteran actor Rick Moranis, the Canadian actor who got his start with Second City Television and starred in the classic Honey, I Shrunk the Kids. Because of the latter, Reed considered asking Moranis to cameo in Ant-Man:

“There was talk. Not to play Hank Pym though. That was one of the things…I of course went back and obsessively watched all the shrinking movies I could think of. When it got to Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, I was like ‘I really miss Rick Moranis, Man!’ And there was talk about like should we have him do some strategic cameo in the movie? But we already had a couple of strategic cameos in the movie then it felt like ‘Okay, that might be gilding the lilly.’ And we felt that if we were going to get Rick Moranis back, he’s got to have more than a cameo.”

Reed never says who Moranis could have played, but if it were just a cameo, then it wouldn’t have been that big. Who knows? He might have played Peachy in the San Quentin scene.

As for the tiny superhero’s future in the MCU, Reed alluded to the possibility of Lang’s character achieving significant growth in future Marvel movies:

Listen, I think with Hank Pym and Scott Lang, and with that technology, I think it’s safe to say at some point somewhere you’re going to see some real growth for that character. I hedge my bet there, because it could be sort of growth as a human being, emotional growth, or literal giant growth. There’s a good chance of that.”

We see what you did there, Reed.

I'm actually glad he didn't cameo.

Last I heard Moranis had given up acting for good (after his wife passed away) so he might not have agreed to do it anyway.

I saw the movie again last night. I greatly enjoyed it. Luis...actually surprisingly, wasn't on my nerves this time. I gotta admit though, multiple repeats of the movie gets better. And I really like Paul as Scott/Ant Man and Evangeline as Hope. Both strong characters. But out of the two, Lilly wins :D

I thought it got better the second time too or, at least, was as entertaining. As a character, I think I'd give Paul a slight edge; though I'm looking forward to
seeing Evangeline as the wasp
.

"...but I got the van!" :woot:

So I finally saw the movie. 2 words. Loved it.

I am surprised to see the film fit in the MCU so comfortably while managing to look different. "Ant-Man will Return" hopefully in Civil War. Can't wait to see him again, I think he has unlimited potential.

I still laugh thinking about the moment the clouds clear up and Lang sees he's storming the Avengers base. "You son of a b......" lolololol

Just wish Marvel had kept that cameo under wraps so that it could have been a surprise.

It was a surprise to me, as I avoided most of the marketing and trailers. So it was cool to see that scene.

Same here, loved it, and I thought the links to the wider MCU were a factor in that, of course I enjoyed the movie in its own right but they helped. I think Ant Man is now the character I am looking forward to most in CW.

:) Glad to see Ant-Man is getting some love. I've seen comments from people on Facebook saying its terrible. Well I dunno what movie they watched. and Like some have said, Ant-Man fits quite comfortably in the MCU :) Well done Marvel

I saw the movie a couple of days ago. I absolutely loved it. I was so surprised I loved it more than I thought I would. Great movie.
