In the DCAU there was like only one or two shades of brown used for Black people.

I always thought that it was odd that Lex Luthor was so dark but never really thought that he was black. Maybe 'cause I was familiar w/ Clancy Brown's voice. But as a kid I figured Destro from G.I. Joe was black 'cause he just sounded black. I was confused when they had an episode that showed he was from Scotland or something. Tripped me out.

Mostly because he's scarred to a crisp or always masked and thereby isn't viewed as black. It's like Killer Croc, I had no idea he was a brother for years.

Most people probably don't know Black Manta is black.

I kinda wish there were more black supervillains. People love them some crazy or sympathetic supervillains, but we've only got Black Manta, whatever villains Luke Cage and/or Black Panther have that nobody cares about, and maybe Apocalypse.

I have heard the thing that black villains kind of have unfortunate implications unless they're fighting black superheroes. "Why the bad guy gotta be black, huh?"

I don't see the problem with black supervillains as long as they aren't some horrible racist stereotype

I like The Wilder family from Runaways, Moses Magnum, Nightshade and the Bushmaster family. I which Marvel would give Nightshade a push as a villain. There aren't many black evil sexy super genius female villains.

The Bushmaster family was the nearest thing Luke Cage had to a arch enemy. They were the equivalent to the Osborn family for Peter Parker.

I think writers are trying to catch up and make more black supervillains although many of them aren't that evil. There still aren't many top tier world threatening black supervillains.

Morgan Edge is black in the new DC 52 universe.

There are albino gangster villains like Tombstone and Tobias Whale.

Punisher villain Barracuda was fun.

D List Spider-Man villain Cardiac is not bad.

There was a few recent black Flash villains created by Geoff Johns like Turbine who are a Tuskegee Airman trapped in the speed force and Peek-a-Boo a teleporting Medical School student and Grinder who is transformed into living Iron.

I think that's the case whenever the hero and villain are different races. Which is interesting since race isn't really an issue when it comes to these characters and their motivations. Except for someone like Black Manta.

Speaking of Black villains, anyone feel that Simon Phoenix from Demolition Man was kinda like a Black Joker?

There might be less of a negative reaction if the villain is treated with some respect: someone with an equal or greater intelligence as the hero. A black Bond villain for instance.

Unfortunately, it's more likely the villain speaks ebonic-influenced English, flies irrationally off the handle for no reason and is primarily motivated by physical lust.

As for black supervillians, Angstrom Levy from the comic "Invincible" is one of my favorites. He's so crazy and diabolical that he makes Dr. Doom look tame.

I mean, you gotta admit, he didn't look like your average white guy. You put him next to Perry, Jimmy, and Mr. Bibbo, you see a significant difference. I thought he was black for years until I saw that Timm quote.....which kinda proves the point. He's white, but he's definitely an ethnic white.

I used to watch it all the time on VHS until one day it was dropped and broken. But, it doesn't matter now since my VCR is broken too.

It's one of the few films I wish they'd remake. Bringing back Don Cheadle would be cool too.

That's interesting.

I always knew he was Black because that's what I was told when I first heard about him. So, it was interesting to learn that it blew the minds of readers years ago when they showed his face. Really, the only thing that shocked me was that he was human with a normal neck.

Doug Braithwaite and Alex Ross make him look like Wesley Snipes to me.

I've only read the first issue of Invincible since it was free on comiXology.

It's actually a pretty well written series. What if Superman was older and he and Lois had a teenage son? What would his perspective be? It's interesting once he comes into his own man. There's a huge plot twist that I won't ruin for anyone but right after the reveal the series is basically one loooooong episode of Dragonball Z.
