I don't watch their show but supposedly Strahan said something along the lines of "He scared poor Erin Andrews to death!" which is the furthest thing from the truth as anyone with access to youtube could see. It's like damn Strahan I know old white ladies are your primary audience but take off the tap shoes...

This guy is of course joking, but he reminded me of an article I read last year in which an old civil rights guy (can't remember his name off top) talked about how if he's walking the street late at night and a white woman comes toward him from the opposite direction he crosses the street so she won't be scared. I was like woooow...that is just sad and crazy on so many levels. F@#$ catering to mofos fear.

Oddly enough, whenever I'd watch Superman animated series I always thought they made Lex Luthor black.

I know they were trying to make Luthor look like Telly Savalas but I don't care what anybody says, the DCAU Lex Luthor is a black man.

He never looked Black to me. I think such claims is what made them lighten his skin once they got to JL/JLU.

I wonder if it's more of his lips than skin tone that make some people think he was Black since he didn't seem that much darker than other White people to me.

I think the Timm Luthor looked about as African-American as Quitley's Luthor did in ALL STAR, which is to say, I not for one moment thought he looked black, or biracial.

It's one of the weirdest things to me. I didn't get it years ago and I still don't get it. How did anyone even think Luthor was black? How did you get there? I mean I guess some of y'all were children so maybe that explains it... *shakes head* idk

Many were under the impression that he was in fact, High Yellow.

I mean, same way you can look at an Albino and tell whether they're black or white.

Due to Lex Luthor's pronounced lips and tanned skin, several fans mistakingly thought he was African-American. This is due to the Telly Savalas inspiration for his look - the reason for which is that producer Bruce Timm thought of Clancy Brown's take on Luthor as a "cultured thug", the same way he saw Savalas' Blofeld in On Her Majesty's Secret Service (Timm's favorite Bond film). Sometimes, the animated Luthor is portrayed as being distinctly darker than the people around him, and sometimes (like the shot in "A Little Piece of Home" where Luthor literally puts his face right into Superman's) his skin color is exactly the same as everybody else. Timm is rumored to quip that his Lex Luthor must "tan easily."

1) Pronounced lips + dark skin. It was a pretty easy mistake to make.

2) Not all black people look the same or are the same shade.

Yes, as a black person I am quite aware not all black people look the same or have the same shade. Yet, I'm perplexed by the fact some took "pronounced lips + dark skin" as black. Luthor's lips were pronounced, but how does that automatically signal black? Does Angelina Jolie look black? And as for dark skin...I can see some saying he is tanned, but I didn't see a light skin black person. I don't see how it was an easy mistake to make, but I know that many did make it.

Loaded question. Angelina Jolie seemed to be passable enough to play a mixed race woman in the film A Mighty Heart.

I mean, you gotta admit, he didn't look like your average white guy. You put him next to Perry, Jimmy, and Mr. Bibbo, you see a significant difference. I thought he was black for years until I saw that Timm quote.....which kinda proves the point. He's white, but he's definitely an ethnic white.

I think Timm and Co. gave a lot of their villains that "ethnic" look even if they were white. Look at Corben on STAS. He looks a bit off too. Or Mala and Jax-Ur. It's just the design of the villainous characters (this applies to the females too), but again I see how some might see "black" in big lips and tanned skin. I get it...
