Dear brotha,
What happened to hip hop?
very respectfully,

knowsbleed
This is a long answer..
First Hip Hop is a full culture consisting of
Dancing (Break)
DJing
Mc's (Rappers)
Graffiti(art)
from a rapping stand point..
Diverse hip hop has to be search for Via Podcasts and the like. Terrestrial radio (Local Radio) and Videos are corporate controlled so they put out what they think (or what they want) you to hear. So bottom line is money. If the masses put more money into buy and supporting a Slum Village album then a 2Chains album then More Hip Hop Music
From a DJ stand point
The true Hip Hop DJ uses Turntables. Though CDJ's are usually accepted the art form of Scratching is best performed on turntables. Those who were the best at DJing (Jazzy Jeff, Roc RaidaR.I.P, DJ Premier, Etc) practiced ans mastered the artform of scratching, mixing and crowd rocking. The problem is that due to technological advances in equipment that the DJ can now DJ using a App on a I-Pad which turns the DJ into a Jukebox.. As long as the DMC competition is still in effect then a aspect of the real DJ will live on..
From A Dance Standpoint..
Theres always gonna be urban dance styles but these days dances come from song videos? The Dougie, The Cat Daddy, and the list goes on. Break Dancing is more popular outside of the US then within. One again if you want it you have to search for it
And From Graffiti
Still once again you have to search for it but I has to a certain degree been accepted into the mainstream Art community which is good. That artform is no longer just on trains and walls and those artists can not put it on a canvas which IMO is a step up.
So thats what happened to Hip Hop. You have to look for it. Its underground just like it was when it first started in the Bronx in the 70's by the Honorable Afrika Bambatta.
