The Official Choose A Director Thread

I mentioned this earlier in the thread, but I'm excited to see Drew Goddard makes his directorial debut with "Cabin In The Woods". Goddard is a very talented screenwriter with a flare for this kind of material, he just needs some directing experience. "Cabin" might be a simple horror flick, but some experience and something to go on is better than nothing, and this is the kind of mind I want working on Superman.

i dont know the guy's work myself. Might check him out to judge him more. Since i cant say anything for or against the guy.

Goddard wrote Cloverfield and has written for Lost, Buffy The Vampire Slayer, and Angel.

I firmly believe that we need a writer and director with genre experience.

yea that would probably help them understanding how the film's look, feel should be.

Louis Leterrier knows how to balance story and action??? I actually don't have a big problem with him but I have to disagree with that assessment.

I liked TIH and Unleased actually but I didn't like em enough to want him to do a Superman reboot.

Keep in mind that with TIH Leterrier was asked to skip a lot of character development and story, and to just get on with the action.

If you watch the extra features there are a lot of scenes and extended scenes that I feel should have been in the movie, and would have provided more story.

Had he been allowed to add even more he likely would have, and in the commentary he sounded a bit disappointed that the studio did not want that.

So in all fairness, he did exactly what the studio asked for. The only thing I can think of him taking a Liberty on was the skin used on the Abomination. Some die hard fans wanted the reptilian looking skin, I was one of them, but I can live with what Leterrier had him looking like.

I really liked how he chose the Hulk to look (the Hulk looking right was kind of a big deal to me), and I found it far better than the Lee version, and the movie FAR more viewable, albeit a shorter movie.

Now, I would not be shocked if Leterrier got the nod to do Superman 3.0, and I know it is early yet, but he has 3 major things going for him in the eyes of the studio.

1. He has proven that he can take orders. He does what the studio says, and I doubt that WB wants anyone to do anything but this time. Leterrier is also the kind of guy who would not have ego issue working in the shadow of Nolan, who would be breathing down the back of any director for Superman. In that way Leterrier looks rather appealing.
TIH was what the Studio wanted. They got what they asked of him. It’s one to attempt to follow orders, its another to succeed in giving what is asked. Was the movie a huge success? Hey it did not top Iron Man, and that was out at the same time, but it made money, and the Hulk fans were pleased, at least the ones I know. Some of those who did not like everything about it still liked it far more than the Lee version.

2. To the studio TIH was a success. They do figures and numbers other than just the bottom line. They factor in the percentages. For example, when a sequel is made they only tend to get ½ to ¾ as much as the first movie made. When a movie is poorly received, they expect even less of sequels. By doing a reboot, and ending up getting as much as they did, with the bad taste of the last one still fresh in the mouth of the movie Audience. In the eyes of Marvel, he did well. That means other studios know of this too, as they keep an eye on each other and talent closely. Likely WB has been eyeing Leterrier already.

3. Leterrier has expressed interest in doing it, and has stated that he grew up reading Superman comics. Given his age, that means he would be familiar with both Silver age and some of the post Byrne stuff as well. Likely there would be few, if any, clashes with what Leterrier wanted to do and when Nolan says, "that’s an order".

So that pretty much sums up why my prediction is Leterrier getting it.
This time it is no secret the movie will be heavily controlled, and he meets all the studio criteria.

That does not mean he will meet all the fan criteria, but half he fans base loved SR, there is no way we would all agree on a director. Heck we (the fans on the boards) cannot even agree to Superman having trunks or not.

I can easily see him getting the director chair for this one, and since I liked TIH I can live with it.

Louis Letterier is good for a fun action packed movie, but he doesn't have the substance. So far, many of his movies have been flash and highly stylized, just like another Luc Besson student, Pierre Morel (Taken).

TIH was probaby as far as it goes when it comes to a coherent narrative for Louis. It was a good flick but not great. I wouldn't be against him though.

I think the Director of this Supes 3.0 reboot will wind up being someone out of these group of directors:

Gore Verbinski (if BioShock has fallen apart he may be open)
Zack Snyder (IMO would work well with being mentored by Nolan)
Frances Lawrence (another guy who may work well with Nolan mentoring him)
James McTiegue (and another)
Neil Bloonkamp (already worked with Jackson, but does he have enough for Superman this early?)
Louie Letterier (can the Frenchman be mentored by Nolan?)

With an outside sleeper type of long shot chance at directing between these two:

JJ Abrams
David Fincher

I'm all for Gore Verbinski.

My pick would be Brad Bird. Since maybe his earthquake movie at WB isn't panning out, he could work out a deal to make Superman so so his other project can get moving afterwards.

yea i would love to see gore, bird, McTiegue. OR its probably going to be some young upcoming director like webb for sony, since we do know its going to be more studio controlled this go around and wb wants someone with no ego issues.

I suggested James Cameron a while back, now look what he's done. Over two billion dollars worldwide with "Avatar". He's made the 2 top grossing movies of all time. He's also directed Aliens and Terminator, which were also great movies that stand the test of time...Yet after the news about Nolan being a mentor, I'm not sure how the two would interact with eachother since they are both creative geniuses. If they could get along, this movie would be HUGE!

Cameron is probably never going to be an option. I would love to see what he could do with superman. But he has stated he would only want to do spider-man, and heck he doesnt even want to do spidey reboot.

I don't think the director who will be chosen will be that much of an unknown rookie director.

This next Supes 3.0 film will be important and they should want someone who has some experience doing big time effects and action who can work with Nolan on pacing, tone and character development IMO.

Well i cant wait to see who it is, hopefully it will be a good pick.

Danny Boyle is at the top of my list right now. For some reason I think that he would do a very good job.

can he handle scifi/action/cgi driven movies? He is a nice name and i would be fine with him.

you have the answer in your post.
because he is so big in hollywood because of that he will not do it. he wouldnt do a movie for you fans. if he would become anytime in the next 10 years interested he would want to do it hes way. there would be a lot of changes. and we dont want this right?
look i understand all of you. you want Jackson,Spielberg and Cameron because you like their action and because you like their big movies. but how did they start doing those movies? someone gave them a chance in hollywood. and this is what we need. a director who has the potential. someone who will want to do a movie for the masses and fans at the same time. someone who is not big in hollywood.

lets leave Neil Bloomkap alone. he showed that he can do something special if you give him more freedom. and this happend because of a low budget. Bloonkamp doing superman will not be like D9. it wont.

i just dont see that a known hollywood director would do a faithful superman movie. so i think lets all hope for a small name.

well he showed to me potential with effects with Sunshine.

can he do action? i think it can be learned.

ok yea i just havent really seen his work, but i heard good things about boyle so if he was picked i would be fine with him.

I'm surprised Wolfgang hasn't popped up since he was set to do the BvS movie before.
Of course that would mean Jude Law (who would bring justice to Superman :D ) or Brad Pitt would get cast as Superman ;)

i did like his name when that whole vs movie was in the works a few yrs ago.

With Nolan working as a mentor I can't imagine a lot of these directors who almost have more experience and on top of that ego would really want to be a part of it. Gore Verbinski for example directed pirates, does he really need to mentored... probably not. ISS did danny boyle do slum dog? if so would an oscar nominated director/winner really need a mentor. I see them going for a relatively up and comer that almost has to do what they say. As a side note people really need to stop mentioning James Cameron, he's never going to do it.

yea cameron is a top fantasy pick for me, but i know logically he isnt, who it will be should be interesting, since we know its going to have to be someone who wont clash much with the studio.

Most of us would guess if Nolan is overseeing things, it could be an in house director we aren't that familiar with.

Probably won't get the big big name. Depends on how this Nolan news pans out.

speaing of inhouse names if it does end up being that is there any names of folks who could be ones that fit that bill more?
