I think some people are......but I believe it's a misnomer on their part. People are effectively confusing "realistic" with "serious" and/or "modern".

If so, how is it less modern or less serious if an alien with superpowers who wears tights and a cape has trunks?

Because red TRUNKS are silly looking.

Chris Reeve made them look good

I feel like I fret too much about this. Last night I had a dream they released footage from the movie, the costume was trunkless, and I feel very disappointed. Perhaps it's time I remind myself that it's just movie, and it doesn't really matter no matter what happens.

seriously trunks aren't worth ruining what could be a awesome movie

Wait, we're allowed to use the word "panties" again?

if anything what Reeve and Cain wore most resembled women's under garments. Routh's looked more like trunks...

You are flogging a dead horse. As the poll shows the demand for the trunks to be ditched is minimal at best. I don't think a poll of the GA would yield a much different result either. If Snyder gets rid of the trunks it will be to appease a minority, which doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. That's one of the reasons that I'm not completely convinced that he is actually going to do that.

What you call the minority are the real majority in the movie ticket buying world. After the die hard comic fans have gone and seen the movie who is left? The rest of the movie going population is left and they are the ones who determine if this movie is going to be a blockbuster or not.

Superman's suit is a lot more cartoony looking than something like batman's. They want Dark Knight profits, that is why the "realistic" term gets tossed around in describing this movie. It was the casual movie fan that made the dark knight such a success. If losing the trunks helps make this movie taken more seriously by the casual movie fan well then it's all worth it.

I of course would rather they stay but if they are removed then there needs to be a good visual adjustment made to the costume to make up for it.

To me, this is the second main reason that a trunkless look is inferior. The main reason is, of course, that they are NOT silly and that they are part of the design of the first and best super-hero's uniform. Only small minds and limited imagination would demand the removal of a classic concept because it's "too hard" to make it work in another medium.

If the trunks must be replaced, then I think the only successful way to do it is to have a red-colored section where the trunks would be.

Something like this:

stone, i totally agree with what your saying and i am one of the 30% that doesn't care but i feel that realistic goes out the window when your dealing with a solar powered herculean alien that can fly

Realistic is loosely just another term for something not being overly campy.

I assume that the reason for banning the use of the word "panties" in reference to Superman is because it starts fights. I assume that nobody here would assume that they are making a homosexual reference since homosexuality has nothing to do with cross-dressing or vice-versa.

Is that correct?

The reason the word is not allowed in reference to Superman's trunks is because it starts fights?

I would just let it be if I were you. Just don't use the word at all and there will be nothing to worry about. Don't start asking questions about it, because even that will just stir up things between some people and mods. It's just not worth it. :yay:

I'm so glad the crimson thong is gone (rhymes!).
They've finally updated the costume. I just wish the comic version looked as cool as this new movie version.
I can't wait to see a proper photo.

You know, that's not half bad...
And if the poll is anything to go by, we have pretty much a 50/50 split between those who want and those who don't want/don't care

I say keep the trunks. It really is not that big a deal and this movie is the only place where we can possibly get a traditional looking Superman any more. Seeing as how DC have butchered his image.

Come on ZS, give us our traditional Superman... and a picture that shows us all of him :)

I just don't see how either of the ones without trunks looks any more realistic or better than the one with trunks. If anything... the make the suit look like a unitard that a ballet dancer would wear.

Remember that this is Superman and it is fantastical (unlike Batman) and if you can accept that a guy would wear a cape and tights...why would you stop believing that he would wear red trunks over top of those tights? Is THAT the line?? "I can belive a guy can fly and I can believe he'd wear a cape... but red trunks are just unbelievable!"

If this was any other superhero, changing up the costume wouldn't be as big an issue... but this is Superman (the first superhero and a pop culture icon) One thing Superman has had since his inception is the red trunks. The tall boots came afterward. The bigger S came later, the long cape came after... the trunks were always there.

Like I said before...his costume is iconic... why change it more than you have to?

A couple of you guys are pushing it....next time is time off.

There is a sticky at the top of the page you better read.

As we can clearly see via the poll, it seems pretty even.
I guess those who can do without the trunks are not the minority some would like us to think they are.

**** it... I was being immature.

Niether of those look good. You need some red to break it up, like the red belt of the new jim lee suit. That works just fine.
I am curious how the new suit accomplishes this as it's difficult to tell atm. All we can see for now is that there's definitely blue under the belt...so no trunks...but i'm still not sure I believe that's how the belt looks.

I don't hate them because they're unbelievable, I hate them because they're silly looking.

Keep in mind, that third pic is only what people think the suit's belt looks like.
