But ever since Beechen, her fighting capabilities have been so nerfed that she most likely isn't number 1 anymore or even in the top 5.

Bedard could start writing him as a homicidal maniac.
Big "Whoops" there. I said "Bedard" when I meant "Beechen." To be fair, they both start with "Be."

Geoff Johns likes colors. :)

It turns out the green energy the Green Lanterns use is just one part of a larger emotional spectrum. Their first encounter with it was through Parallax, a fear demon who harnessed the power of the yellow part of the spectrum. The Qwardians' yellow rings from the antimatter universe harness the same power, and Sinestro teamed up with Parallax and sought out others who relied on fear, forming them into his Sinestro Corps.

The Zamarons then harnessed the power of the violet portion of the spectrum, which represents love, in their Star Sapphires. They're basically selecting those who've lost loved ones and want to spread love through the universe so no one will have to experience that, as well as brainwashing people they capture, like Fatality, into joining them as "rehabilitation."

Ganthet and Sayd left the Guardians of the Universe and harnessed the blue part of the spectrum, hope, to create their Blue Lanterns, whose numbers are very low and whose rings can only work in the presence of Green Lanterns but can also dispel the red plasma that Red Lanterns vomit up and supercharge Green Lantern rings.

Atrocitus, a longtime enemy of the Guardians and Sinestro back when he was a Green Lantern, was really pissed off and killed an old buddy of his, which somehow bound the red portion of the spectrum, rage, to blood. He and his Red Lanterns gained the ability to vomit up plasma that can burn through pretty much anything and drain Green Lantern power rings.

We've just learned that Larfleeze, another ancient enemy of the Guardians, is Agent Orange, tapping into the orange part of the spectrum with his unbridled greed. He's so greedy, in fact, that he kills anyone who comes near him, fearing they'll try to take his orange lantern, and pretty much steals their souls using his power. So the Orange Lanterns are effectively all just constructs that Larfleeze owns.

The Indigo Tribe hasn't been introduced yet, although we've seen pictures. They have staves instead of rings and they represent compassion.

The Black Lanterns have been prophesied by Scar, a rogue Guardian, and are going to be zombie versions of dead established characters like the Superman of Earth-2 and the Martian Manhunter. They'll also be tied to Black Hand somehow, since their symbol is the same as his. Black probably represents death or the end or something like that, but I don't think it's been explicitly stated yet.

Johns alluded to the black colour WAY back in GL with Black Hand, who comments that black is death, and the absence of emotion.

The emotional spectrum still strikes me as something of a square peg in a round hole, given how much Johns has had to retcon to make it work, but what he and Tomasi are doing with it is pretty cool. I'm not relishing the idea of the Martian Manhunter and Aquaman being zombies enslaved to Black Hand and Scar, but hopefully it'll end with them returning to life.

I agree, but that said these stories and concepts and new characters have really put the GLC's on a whole new level. Loving agent orange right now.

Although, it's more accurate to refer to the spectrum as "drives". Greed isn't really an emotion. The same can be said for hope.

yeah I agree, the emotion thing isn't quite right, but I can let that go for the sake of a kick ass story. I'm not sure compassion qualifies either.

I just cannot believe ALL of Morrison's Big Seven have died now. Every last one.

If we're talking Bruce, Clark, Diana, Arthur, Kyle, Wally, and J'onn, they all technically died in The Obsidian Age...

I thought Womp meant either the Great 10 of the People's Republic or the Seven Soldiers.

If you haven't read Morrison's JLA, GO READ IT NOW.

Cassandra is -- no joke, no hyperbole, no ****tin' ya -- often stated to be somewhere at the top 1. That's not even the first time she defeated Lady Shiva.

Yeah, Cass is supposed to be the best, with Lady Shiva, Richard Dragon, Bronze Tiger, and (on a good day) Connor Hawke close behind.

I think Deathstroke might be up there as well, but he probably doesn't count since he's got superpowers on top of his martial arts.

So Cassandra is the best H2H in the DC U?

I thought Shiva, Batman, Batgirl (the feral wild one or whatever) were the heavyweights?

Who was the feral wild Batgirl? The only Batgirls I know of are Barbara Gordon (who was good enough to beat up thugs, but doesn't belong on this list, and certainly wasn't feral or wild), Helena Bertinelli (who was only Batgirl for about a week while Batman was missing, hardly counts as a Batgirl at all, and could probably get her ass kicked by Robin), Bette Kane (who was only Bat-Girl pre-Crisis, and is nowhere near top tier in terms of fighting skills), and Cassandra Cain (who we've been talking about).

Shiva is one of the heavyweights. She's probably the #2 or #3 hand-to-hand fighter on Earth.

Batman is damned good, but I'd say he's more in Black Canary's league than Shiva's.

Unless he's written by Jeph Loeb, in which case he can punch her out in a single blow.

 No, seriously.

Yeah I'm not aware of any feral Batgirl.

Batman's not even in the top five....that said he could probably beat all of them....if he cheats.

In other words, "teh preptimez!!!1one"

Well, the man does have a sci fi closet. Nothing beats kung fu like a ray gun blast to the face. :o
