The Official Goku/Justin Chatwin Thread

My problem with Chatwin saying "cool" in the trailer isn't so much the way he says it as much as the fact that he says it at all. It's modern slang, Goku shouldn't even know what saying "cool" means. Though this falls in line with Goku going to high school and wearing "hip" clothing. The point is, one of the absolute fundamentals of Goku's Characterization is his naivete and ignorance towards current society. I don't think I can stress just how critical those attributes are to his personality. His other major line in the trailer is just as bad if not worst, but I think most people realize that already.

The other flaws and divergences in the trailer I can overlook. In fact I liked some aspects of it(Piccolo), However Goku's portrayal and to a lesser extent Roshi's are too important to just accept. This isn't "organic webbing" we're dealing with here, but complete reversals in critical character traits.

I think Chatwin was depressed when he said "cool"

look at his surroundings, his house is destroyed, Gohan is probably dead at that point, what do you expect? Regardless of how naive and goofy Goku was, there we times where he got serious, he loves his family and friends so much, and yes the world, he do anything to protect them, and if he had to get serious, he got serious

Again, my problem isn't the way he says it, I understand he's depressed, it's the fact that he's using slang at all.

I don't get it, what slang? what would you prefer for him say?

The word "cool" is slang, or very modern vernacular. A simple nonchalant "wow" or "whoa" would have sufficed. I admit it's a bit nit-picky, but it goes back to the fact that Goku in the movie is apparently educated and isn't naive or ignorant towards modern society and social mores.

I don't think from this trailer in particular when a say that Goku will be educated and won't have that blissful ignorance, who knows, maybe Goku had terrible grades, and all he knows is fighting,

look as a kid Goku was like that

but when he grew up some of his ignorance toned down, he isn't that damn stupid...

If Goku said "wow that's neat" people would still be complaining saying something like "Goku wouldn't say that! He should be trying to eat that bike!"

the problem here is, once again, Goku has been exposed to the modern world...so him seeing something like that wouldn't be very surprising to him. on the other hand, if they made him a wild child like he is in the anime/manga, then he would have been caught off guard and his response would have probably been something like "WHAT THE HECK IS THAT?"

Goku being ignorant is his choice, he's not stupid. These arguments are old and have been brought up plenty of times before. Goku goes to high school, he wears hip urban clothing, and uses slang. These added attributes run completely 180 degrees counter to Goku's fundamental characterization. I really can't stress how big these changes truly are. It'd be like making Peter Parker a popular jock. Just a complete role reversal from his manga counterpart.

I'm pretty confident Goku's said cool before.

The reaction in the trailer lasts for a second at best. Maybe in context of the scene, he has an obvious reaction of surprise, followed by the "cool" to contrast it for ironic humor. Maybe...

and again I'm not blaming Chatwin for the supposed change in characterization

I say blame Ramsey, I know Chatwin could pull off the Goku essence you so desperately want, like I said earlier, they could have picked the perfect choice for you, and he still could have giving a crappy performance without these "fundamental" characteristics

I think Chatwin knows how important this character is to the fans, and I believe him when he says he read the entire manga, plus the monkey king, but I think none of that matters if the script gives Goku a different character

and I agree with people who say hiring Ramsey was Fox's biggest mistake, and is the reason why people hate it so much, I think Wong did the best he could to his abilities to change that script... but Fox did pay Ramsey $500,000 to pen that God awful script, they're not going to pay another guy to write a completely new one, they're too greedy, I honestly think if Wong was giving the creatively power from scratch he would have came out with a better script, I like Wong's writteng from some of those X-Files episodes

so once again blame Fox and Ramsey don't bash Chatwin, give him a chance

I don't blame Chatwin at all, he's a competent actor and has a wide eyed innocence about him that I like. He could have been a great Goku.

when i criticize Chatwin i try to be fair. i don't blame him for the mistakes made in production, but i don't think he realized just how big of a task he was jumping into...and i don't think he understood the character of Goku before taking on the role.

no but it was the drive to deliver something epic that killed him. but batman fanboys immediately concluded that he will suck in the first teaser trailer. but after seeing the movie we all know what happened from there...

the same conclusion is happening with justin and jamie in a trailer that makes up i don't 5% of the movie

Wrong. There's no point in even arguing this. Why do some of you keep comparing Ledger to Chatwin?

Agreed.

because this is the very same thing happening anyway i'm done with this issue i already know you hate the movie. chatwin will deliver a good goku "general audience" will understand and accept that's my opinion.

Hahaha Ramsey wanted to make goku a Card playin/video game geek lol thank god Wong fixed that.

And for that people get paid amounts like $500,000? Screw it, I'll start writing ****ty scripts too.

I think we can agree any fan could have came up with a better script than Ramsey's

Ledger had people hooked when the first image and teaser trailer was released.

It's not a valid comparison.

James Wong is not Christopher Nolan. Justin Chatwin is no Heath Ledger.
No. People thought he was Zombie Joker.

I remember TONS of hate for that first Ledger image.
