Jada wasn't toning it down. She's still a cartoon.

Lol seriously. If that was toning it down then I can't imagine what Hamming it up would be. The main issues as others have said is a total lack of consistency tone wise the show is just jarring. One scene you have a lady being punched in the face by bullock, illusions to priests diddling little kids, then you have fish doing what fish does in her scenes. It's frankly off putting and really really sloppy. There's no subtlety it's just all in your face and kind of obnoxious at times. The Barbara Montoya lesbo thing is so overplayed I'm already tired of it. I could go on and on but thankfully unless this gets about a hundred times better quickly it's days are numbered. We can argue with semantics about what is and what isn't "camp" but lets just say the show lacks any type of underlying stability, stuff just happens, no real tension and no real payoff.
Her acting in the pilot. She was more dramatic even in the second episode. She was fairly normal here.
I think too many people expected this to be serious and terrifying. What a let down for them. Though, this show works more for some Bat-fans than others. I don't care that this show is dark camp. It's just what it was intended to be. I hope it keeps going. Hell, even Dexter was campy, but look how long it lasted. If Smallville can get 10 seasons, this should at least get 5.
The villains in the last 2 episodes were so hokey that it doesn't surprise me when i hear about ratings going down dramatically. I guarantee that kind of crap is what will turn the people off from this. Remember, the general audience watching this show are probably only exposed to Burton/Shumacher/Nolan. And it's only been 2 years since Nolans trilogy, and the Affleck announcement is fresh and they're continuing with a serious approach to that world at least. The people are excited the first couple of weeks because it's a new show based on Gotham. They want to see what happens next, what Gordon is going to do, what villains may appear. Now that the first 2 are behind us, it's gonna have to be about story, for people to stick with it. Or at the very least some popular villains from the rogues gallery.
I have a feeling this show may crash and burn by the tenth episode if they're not careful.
You cant compare Dexter, especially the first half of that series, to Gotham. The camp was different. I wouldn't even call it camp. It's dark/black humor. Great acting, well-written seasons, and cliffhangers that had you at the edge of your seat. They knew what they were doing at first. Gotham is tonally all over the place, bad acting at least half of the time, poor villains that feel like they're out of a 60s tv show, etc.
You certainly don't have to watch it if your mind is already made up.
I dont have to, but i will, because im curious to see how bad it is or if it gets better. And i dont watch it when it airs.
Mindreaper21, i dont want to see rogues revealed this early. If it was up to me, none of them would be here except for Oswald. But they may need to bring those rogues in if they want ratings to go up. But i can care less about tv ratings, i just want quality.
Are some things a bit on the nose? Yes, but don't forget, it's the CW, not HBO. I don't get the complaints about unsubtle/extensive references to characters in this show. Just because you noticed it and it wasn't the most subtle thing ever written doesn't mean it's sledgehammer dialogue, either.
Case in point: Selina slinking around, being shown feeding cats, stealing milk, stealing other things, being able to see in the dark, etc...these are not just references to her future as Catwoman.
These are character traits that they are introducing so they can develop the character in a particular direction.
It's like being told a character likes baseball during a sitcom, except that for instance, here, Selina likes stray cats. Which makes sense, both literally and metaphorically. She herself is a bit of a cast-off, a street dweller, and a loner. It works on more levels than "OBVIOUS CATWOMAN REFERENCE!".
I'm also not seeing this "camp" some of you are speaking of.
I suspect that some of you do not know what camp is.
This show is not making fun of itself. Slightly over the top mannerisms and larger than life behavior is not necessarily "camp". Nods and elements of characters being revealed is also not "camp".
Nevermind that loving amounts of camp has long been a staple of the Batman mythology. Even in the more serious comics and movies.

Question: Any news or spoilers on Gotham? Im hooked after only three episodes and Im curious whats ahead. Eric F.
Ausiello: A better question is whos ahead, and the answer is Dr. Leslie Thompkins. DC Comics aficionados know her as Bruce Waynes Godmother, but I hear Gotham is tweaking Batman lore a smidge by also making her a love interest for James Gordon. (Note to Barbara Kean: Dont shoot the messenger.) Got casting tips? Hit the comments!
