Jada wasn't toning it down. She's still a cartoon.

Lol seriously. If that was toning it down then I can't imagine what Hamming it up would be. The main issues as others have said is a total lack of consistency tone wise the show is just jarring. One scene you have a lady being punched in the face by bullock, illusions to priests diddling little kids, then you have fish doing what fish does in her scenes. It's frankly off putting and really really sloppy. There's no subtlety it's just all in your face and kind of obnoxious at times. The Barbara Montoya lesbo thing is so overplayed I'm already tired of it. I could go on and on but thankfully unless this gets about a hundred times better quickly it's days are numbered. We can argue with semantics about what is and what isn't "camp" but lets just say the show lacks any type of underlying stability, stuff just happens, no real tension and no real payoff.

Her acting in the pilot. She was more dramatic even in the second episode. She was fairly normal here.

The main problems are the writing and the tone, which affects the acting negatively. Arrow has the right tone, that's what Gotham needs instead of dumb plots and villains. Ratings are way down, which shows people are losing interest in watching this mediocrity.

Precisely, mikelus. I'm actually quite astonished more posters aren't a bit more dismayed at the way the best superhero of all times city and charecterization is being portrayed. Between fish and this balloon man I can easily see gotham becoming a laughingstock very very soon. It already has to me and it sucks I really wanted this show to be great, and it really coulda been. So much wasted potential it's beyond frustrating.

I think too many people expected this to be serious and terrifying. What a let down for them. Though, this show works more for some Bat-fans than others. I don't care that this show is dark camp. It's just what it was intended to be. I hope it keeps going. Hell, even Dexter was campy, but look how long it lasted. If Smallville can get 10 seasons, this should at least get 5. Besides, it's not like Gotham is as bad as the two forbidden Batman films.

The villains in the last 2 episodes were so hokey that it doesn't surprise me when i hear about ratings going down dramatically. I guarantee that kind of crap is what will turn the people off from this. Remember, the general audience watching this show are probably only exposed to Burton/Shumacher/Nolan. And it's only been 2 years since Nolans trilogy, and the Affleck announcement is fresh and they're continuing with a serious approach to that world at least. The people are excited the first couple of weeks because it's a new show based on Gotham. They want to see what happens next, what Gordon is going to do, what villains may appear. Now that the first 2 are behind us, it's gonna have to be about story, for people to stick with it. Or at the very least some popular villains from the rogues gallery.

I have a feeling this show may crash and burn by the tenth episode if they're not careful.

You cant compare Dexter, especially the first half of that series, to Gotham. The camp was different. I wouldn't even call it camp. It's dark/black humor. Great acting, well-written seasons, and cliffhangers that had you at the edge of your seat. They knew what they were doing at first. Gotham is tonally all over the place, bad acting at least half of the time, poor villains that feel like they're out of a 60s tv show, etc.

Fox is not the CW, their expectations are way higher, they cancelled Almost Human which was around 6 million viewers, Gotham is getting there fast, but we'll see.

They also really hurt Almost Human by airing episodes out of order.

What were people expecting Gotham was always going to have some Campy Villains IMO. They can't bring Characters Like Mr Freeze Two Face Joker in when Bruce Wayne is in their teens. Sure they have penguin running around but he was just a stooge at the time.

Still, it's too early to judge the show just 3 episodes in. You're viewing things out of your own perspective. Many people have said "Oh this show is horrible. I bet it get's cancelled soon." about too many shows to count, yet the series lasted longer than expected. You are one out of millions of people that has watched Gotham. Neither you, I, nor anyone else knows those millions of opinions. You are more focused on certain details than other people, which ruins the show for you. That's just bad for you. If you're expecting a lot of major villains to be revealed this early in the series, you're going to be disappointed about that as well since many don't even show up until Bruce becomes Batman. It's all building up. The show could end up getting even better. You certainly don't have to watch it if your mind is already made up.

I dont have to, but i will, because im curious to see how bad it is or if it gets better. And i dont watch it when it airs.

Mindreaper21, i dont want to see rogues revealed this early. If it was up to me, none of them would be here except for Oswald. But they may need to bring those rogues in if they want ratings to go up. But i can care less about tv ratings, i just want quality.

The thing is, they did bring a rogue in episode 3. Sal Maroni. Sure he's not one of the costumed villains, but he still has a major roll in the story. I figure that since this season is basically the rise of Penguin, it will mostly be focused on the mob bosses as far as the rogues gallery is concerned. We may even get Roman Sionis or even Rupert Thorne this season. There was even mention of the Arkham family, which has never really been explored. Then were getting Two-Face later. You never know who may pop up next.

Are some things a bit on the nose? Yes, but don't forget, it's the CW, not HBO. I don't get the complaints about unsubtle/extensive references to characters in this show. Just because you noticed it and it wasn't the most subtle thing ever written doesn't mean it's sledgehammer dialogue, either.

Case in point: Selina slinking around, being shown feeding cats, stealing milk, stealing other things, being able to see in the dark, etc...these are not just references to her future as Catwoman.

These are character traits that they are introducing so they can develop the character in a particular direction.

It's like being told a character likes baseball during a sitcom, except that for instance, here, Selina likes stray cats. Which makes sense, both literally and metaphorically. She herself is a bit of a cast-off, a street dweller, and a loner. It works on more levels than "OBVIOUS CATWOMAN REFERENCE!".

I'm also not seeing this "camp" some of you are speaking of.

I suspect that some of you do not know what camp is.

This show is not making fun of itself. Slightly over the top mannerisms and larger than life behavior is not necessarily "camp". Nods and elements of characters being revealed is also not "camp".

Nevermind that loving amounts of camp has long been a staple of the Batman mythology. Even in the more serious comics and movies.

But see, i think the show could greatly benefit if it did make fun of itself and become self aware. During last night's episode i was surprised not ONE person acknowledged the absolute absurdity of a guy that kills people with balloons. It wouldve been great to at least get one tongue in cheek line of dialogue from Gordon saying something like, " Seriously? A Balloon killer? What is with this wacky city?". This is something Arrow does very well. That show also has its fair share of overdramatric dialogue and cheesiness (cough cough Count Vertigo cough cough) but they at least acknowledge some of its own absurdity and are tongue in cheek with it.

Wow, just watched Montoya and Barbara kiss. Jesus Christ. I'm almost done with this show.

Grrrr lesbians!!!! :argh:

Get off my lawn, lesbians! :argh:

I don't mind the campy tone sometimes, but most of it seems to be coming from Jada's direction.

Anyone worked out that accent yet?

We didn't actually see her smoke it, haha.

She was just walking around with a lit joint!

No you can't. One is a tv series about a serial killer. The other is about a comicbook/cartoon city. Well known for it's criminals who dress up as clowns/make toys or tell riddles.

Don't try and compare them. Gotham is not trying to be Dexter, it is trying to be itself.

Question: Any news or spoilers on Gotham? I’m hooked after only three episodes and I’m curious what’s ahead. —Eric F.
Ausiello: A better question is who’s ahead, and the answer is… Dr. Leslie Thompkins. DC Comics’ aficionados know her as Bruce Wayne’s Godmother, but I hear Gotham is tweaking Batman lore a smidge by also making her a love interest for James Gordon. (Note to Barbara Kean: Don’t shoot the messenger.) Got casting tips? Hit the comments!

*waits for the impending righteous anger*

I'm glad they're including Leslie. I wasn't sure they would.
