Take that a step further. I always felt like TIH could be viewed as a loose sequel to 2003's Hulk. The Avengers' Hulk was built and moved more like Ang's Hulk than TIH's Hulk. So both of those felt like canon to me.

Well, you have to unthink that because Marvel stated that The Incredible Hulk was not a direct sequel, loose or otherwise, to Ang Lee's Hulk movie.

Oh my bad I didn't bother to look them, however I've never heard of a professional fight being judged based on "damage" taken.

I agree. I dont know how anyone can watch the opening credits of incredible hulk and think its a sequel of any kind. The origin and story behind him being hulk is pretty different. Im happy with the reference they give TIH in plavengers. "last time I was in new york I sort of broke harlem" yes u did sir.

The New Yorker review singles out Ruffalo's performance with a neat paragraph:

Mark Ruffalo, as Dr. Bruce Banner a.k.a. the Hulk, is both the sentimental and sociological heart of the movie. The power of his performance is in the poignant self-awareness that he brings to Banner, whom he plays as a troubled intellectual, a nerd with out-of-control emotional issues that both embarrass and frighten him. It’s as if he embodies a latent violence in American society, a rage of boundless power that sometimes turns bloody at home but which, when roused by righteous indignation, is an irresistible scourge to enemies.

That sounds almost like that description could've been applied to Bill Bixby. Ruffalo's performance was somewhat reminiscent, which is probably why people are praising it.

I liked Ruffalo more than I thought I would as Banner. Being he's mostly been a "rom com" type actor before the role, I was skeptical he could pull it off, but I enjoyed his performance.

Out of the 3 film actors who've played him though, Norton is still my favorite. I happen to enjoy a more conflicted and "man on the run" Banner as opposed to the way he's been depicted in the Avengers books/shoes/movie but YMMV. Would've been interesting to see what Norton would've done with the role in The Avengers though seeing as how at the end of TIH he seemed to learn to control the beast as opposed to vice versa.

Sorry I'm late...

First off, I have to give credit to Joss Whedon for doing an excellent job, as I thought the movie was a beautifully imagined, well balanced story. All…of the characters were well written and had substance; I felt that he should be given credit for not slighting anyone, giving every character their moments. He should be commended for putting together a movie with so many positives, and little negatives. I loved the way earth was introduced to greater threats and the reasoning behind it. I loved how each of the big four Avengers played a subtle part in the approaching perils. I loved the interactions between all of the characters. All of the actors involve nailed their characters. I enjoyed everyone from Fury to Hill.

I want to see if the go anywhere with Stark’s belief that Hulk somehow may have saved Banner from being poisoned by Gamma radiation, by exploring just what part of Banner Hulk is? I loved Stark’s line to Banner that he should “stop tip toeing and learn to strut.” I’m not quite sure if that was meant as a shrewd jab at what has been lacking with the solo Hulk movie success, but I feel that that is the problem that the other Hulk films have had…too much time was lost in trying to develop Hulk’s growth/evolution as a character, and not getting directly to the core of what he is and does. Still, I was not completely satisfied overall with the Hulk…but it was a huge step in the right direction. We finally have a Hulk with some personality that shows that he is not completely daft to what’s going on around him and can work with others. I really loved the way Hulk looked, explosive as he moved, his quick reflexes, the way he ran, leaped and attacked; but I do think they overdid it with the “ape-like” movements. Two scenes made me cringe something terrible. It bothered me that before Hulk attacked Loki, he double fist pounded the floor like a gorilla, I would have preferred he one fist pounded it or pounded both fists in front of himself. The other scene that made me cringe was when he was leaning over Stark with Thor and Cap after he caught him; too monkey-like for my Hulk taste. Instead of roaring at him, I wish he would have barked something like “Get up Stark!” or “Wake up Tin Man!” Also, the Hulk growls and Hulk voice needs a lot of work. I’m truly happy Ruffalo acted most things Hulk; but the effects on both growls and Hulk voice need major work. Loved the “Puny God” comment to Loki but it sounded too Bannerish. I’ve criticized the two other films for taking too much from the old television show, but if there are any take aways from the old show, it should be Bill Bixby’s portrayal of Banner and the first Season of the show Ted Cassidy’s Hulk growls and roars which are still the best to this day. All in All as far as Hulk himself, his strength, appearance, movements, and personality goes, Josh Whedon’s Hulk gets an overall “B” while in comparison Ang Lee’s Hulk gets an overall “C“ and Letterrier’s TIH gets a “C+”.

I thoroughly enjoyed Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner and he did a good pretty good job as Hulk other than the minor things mentioned above. His Banner was far from the whiney, sulky, mope of a mess that he’s been in the previous movies and most of the animated shows. I loved the none assuming, confident scientist, who’d rather not split hairs, but is far from being naive or too humble that he wouldn’t clear the air just to let you know that he’s nobody’s fool. I want to see more from him as Banner and Hulk.

Anyone else think we will see him and possibly Hulk in Iron Man 3?

Probably because the opening credits are one of only a few things that distinguish TIH as a reboot. Which makes sense because it was in fact originally written as a loose sequel to the 2003 film - its not coincidence that one film ends in South America and the other opens in Brazil. IIRC it was when Norton signed on that things definitively changed and he pushed to include the more TV like origin such that it became a clean break from the first film.

That's what I was speculating on before the movie came out...that Hulk might pop up in other franchises; especially IM3 since he left with Tony

Ruffalo signed a 6-picture deal; no way that's for 5 more Avengers movies. 2 more Avengers movies plus 3 unnamed...seems to me he will be showing up in other franchises to possibly add more action and give them a box office boost. Personally I would love to see Hulk/Thor and Hulk/Cap team-up

The relationship between stark and banner was beyond perfect. I loved the confidence stark had in Bruce.

Too true...I think Banner will be in Iron Man 3.

Did anyone else noticed the mini "ground slam" Hulk did when he was on the leviathan's back with Thor?

Yes. That scene with Hulk and Thor gave me chills when
Hulk jams a piece of Leviathan into itself and Thor sees it and jams it further with Mjolnir.

I wanted Norton back for continuity. Good thing I don't always get what I want.

Norton was always my first pick as Banner, but when they announce Ruffalo, I knew he'd do as good. I'm glad Ruffalo lived up to my high expectations.

I agree with you on everything, especially Hulk having too many "ape-like" traits and roaring unecessarily after waking up Iron Man.

He roared to wake up IM and when IM woke up he roared again, I was like "Ok now, he's the Hulk not King Kong" he clearly has the ability to talk.

Hulk roaring was a late addition to Hulk comic continuity. I think it started in the late 70's with the show and has become a Hulk staple. IMO, it works when he's angry and blowing off steam, but not all willy-nilly with it.

It didn't take away from the fact that this was the best portrayal of Hulk by far so far. I hate the primal rage crap.

Yeah, I know they're afraid of having him talk too much in live action for some reason, but he should just be kind of quiet a la EMH, where he's obviously pretty civilized but prone to getting pissed for no reason.

I don't have a problem with him roaring, but the roar after he woke up IM was uneccessary and made him come off as too much of an animal.

His facial expressions while he was doing that roar was also far too exaggerated, I think Hulk's roar before he attacked the jet was perfect.

Actually Ruffalo is more of an indie film actor; he did at most 4 rom coms with the last one being 7 years ago. But it's understandable that people have this impression since the rom coms were probably more publicized than his other work since then like Zodiac, Shutter Island, The Kids are Alright etc..

And yeah I think it's pretty inspired casting to get an actor with his background; maybe it's just me but I feel that his speech pattern/delivery is slightly different from the rest which allows him to stand out.

Ruffalows Banner did take up right where Nortons left off though... cracking jokes about being contained in big metal prssurized tubes

was on the exact same level as Norton being nervous about getting on the SUbway or Bus

Ruff's deleivery was quite a bit more comedic though .... Loved it when he realised the Helicarier was airborn, and he said

"oh no.... this is much worse"

But it was his interaction with Stark that was priceless. Not that Norton couldn't have done it.... but Mark realy nailed it

Mark was both tragic and hilarious as Bruce. He had this whole attitude of "Wow, these people really don't understand how much of a danger I am...but I do." He had a very dry sense of humour that added a great layer to the character in film. A very nice change.

Mark's Banner had a lot to appreciate. He played it very well, and the script gave him some neat little touches as well (like his checking out the 'exits' on the Hellicarrier where he slowly ambles towards the door with the big Shield logo, sees the agents then turns back).

And his "You already rented out my room" barb at Fury was a great line too.

One of Hulk's former writers Greg Pak said it best, he said something to the affect that "In order to get Hulk correct, you have to understand his syntax."

Any long term Hulk reader can tell you which writer understands Hulk syntax from the ones that don't. Though different incarnations had different degrees of intelligence, Hulk had a style that is unique to him. This is why I desire Marvel Studios and Television to consult with Greg Pak and Peter David at the very least on Hulk in live action in order to get it correct. If not have them as writers.

One of the best characteristics about Hulk is what he says, why and when.

EXACTLY! If you start the movie without the opening credits it plays as a sequel. Lou Ferigno is even still working as a security guard at the university where the incident took place. I know the 2003 film is not considered canon and is frowned upon but it is fun to watch them back to back and watch Banner's progression as a character. We have been presented with 3 different Bruce Banners and they can all easily be traced back to each other from the endings of the previous movies. Hell, The Incredible Hulk has more in common with Hulk than the tv series anyway (for one thing David Banner was married and his wife died in a car accident. Betty's still alive and well in the movies).

Exactly. I also like when he first met Nick Fury and says to him"Thank you for asking nicely." Then goes right into scientist mode.

Yeah that was cool and when he asks Cap "Is that the only word on me?" Trying to feel out the scenario.

Mark was awesome as Banner. He felt genuine and quirky at times. I want to see a fully fleshed out film with him as Banner and Hulk.

I think its time TIH2 becomes a priority of marvel....

In Ang Lee's Hulk they were at Cal-Berkely. In TIH, they were at a college in Virginia.
