Spider-Man The Official "I Loved Raimi's Spider-Man' Thread - Part 1 of 99 Luft - - - - Part 13

Im on S3 and whew! SO.MUCH.GOING ON! 1 & 2 were very tight, 1 big bad. Here we are in 3 with 3 villains, 2 love interests, relationship drama. All could've been spread out through 2-3 films.

So I decided to marathon the Raimi films today on a whim. I’m about halfway through Spider-man 3. Been at least 6 or 7 years since I watched these in their entirety. I still love first two.

With 3, I find it interesting that it’s not nearly as bad as I recall it being. In fact, I’m really enjoying it, though I am realizing it’s mostly solid until around the bridge scene with MJ. I really think it starts to fall off after this point.

I probably wouldnt have killed Harry off at the end and they swapped Gwen Stacey for Felicia Hardy. Gwen served no real purpose in this film while Felicia could've been in her place and alluded to her being Black Cat.

She added more to Brock's hatred of Peter, albeit insignificantly.
But Gwen was instrumental in making Peter slap MJ and defeating the symbiote's hold on him.

With all the hype for Tobey, Molina, and Dafoes return, I decided to finally get this poster after 17 years.

when I was a kid, I had the original S-M2 teaser poster with dock ock in his eye that I got from EB games for pre-ordering the tie in game (before they merged with Gamestop in the US). I always wanted the choice poster, so I finally decided to get a reprint all these years later. I also have a reprint of the one from the first movie with the twin towers in his eye.

Felicia could've done the same thing. Brock lusts after Felicia, she's more interested in Parker/Spiderman.

Sam Raimi haven't introduced an important character without showing us their family, even by a glimpse or by voice like with MJ's parents in Spider-Man 1. If he introduced Felicia then he'd probably make her the daughter of George Stacy, and that wouldn't go well with anyone's sensibilities.

I think Eddie Brock is the only major player left without even mentioning his family in that trilogy.

Eddie Brock was also the only villain in those movies to not be sympathetic in any way, just a jerk-ass through and through. It's ironic considering Eddie Brock was among the more sympathetic villains in the comics before Venom turned full anti-hero.

Something I noticed after rewatching the Raimi trilogy: It's funny how people complain about the villains in the Holland Spider-Man movies always having some kind of connection to Tony Stark but if you look at the Raimi movies, literally every villain had a connection to Peter. While we're at it, the villains in the Webb movies are all connected to Oscorp. Rhino was the closest to just being a random villain until Oscorp gave him the suit.

Hopefully Tobey Peter uses Andrew Peter as a meat shield in the new movie.

IMO you take out Venom, Spider-Man 3 is saved. After all these years I ended liking Topher Venom a bit more than back in 2007, but ultimately he was not needed in this movie.

Still has one of my favorite lines in the series though. "I like being bad, it makes me happy".

Tobey's Spider-Man not really joking doesn't bother me. There really were not that many scenes where Spider-Man joking would have added anything.

In Spider-Man 1 when the Green Goblin is holding MJ, and the bus-full of kids hostage that wouldn't be a good time to joke.

In Spider-Man 2 when Spider-Man's fighting Doc Ock on top of the train is also not a good time to joke.

Tobey did get to joke around in the tie-in video games.

The best joke he made was probably "HERE'S YOUR CHANGE!" as he launched a heavy bag of coins full force at a middle aged man with no discernible super powers or abilities besides four mechanical arms. :o

Yea, Spidey could have easily knocked him out in one punch. He just needed to pull his punches to that extent.

There was some non-Venom stuff that was pretty rough. Obviously the whole Sandman being Uncle Ben’s killer thing. But I also really hated Harry being evil, losing his memory and becoming good, randomly getting his memory back and being evil again, then finally being good again in the end.

Not to mention Sandman’s completely disconnected superpower origin. Had nothing to do with anything.

I don't mind Harry losing his memory. It's true to the comics. Plus by having Harry lose his memories of hating Spider-Man it reminds the audience of the kind person that Harry originally was.

I also think that Mary Jane had to be kidnapped in order for the plot to work. Peter, and Harry were so divided that the one thing that they both could agree on is that they both care about MJ.

Except she wasn’t supposed to (hence that speech in the trailer about forgiveness). Gwen was going to but the actress found out she was pregnant which led to them changing to Mary Jane

Yeah they changed it. Besides the Gwen actress getting pregnant the writers also probably realized that it made more sense for Harry to go into action to save Mary Jane than to save a girl that he barely knows.

Harry's motivation would have been trying to help Peter moreso than Gwen.

And he's the one villain he should talk to his other self, but doesn't in this trilogy.

But at that point in the story Harry, and Peter aren't getting alone so why would Harry risk his life for Peter?
Putting Mary Jane in danger makes more sense from a storyline point of view because as I said before no matter how divided they were the one thing that they both could agree on is MJ.
Mary Jane is the one person that can make Peter, and Harry come together, and put their differences aside.

With all the years to ponder, I think what I would have done is have both kidnapped. It forces Peter to confront both the women he wronged, and makes Eddie seem nastier for involving Gwen, the woman he said he loves, but is only using her as a tool for revenge, much like Peter did himself. This also gives the ladies a bit more to do, MJ can have some snark about routinely being held hostage, but help Gwen through it, and the two can bond a little while trying to escape.
