Spider-Man The Official "I Loved Raimi's Spider-Man' Thread - Part 1 of 99 Luft - - - - Part 13

I really loved the idea of MJ going to Harry to ask him to help Peter. I'm not exactly sure why they changed that to just having MJ getting kidnapped again.

I think it was that they couldn't have Bryce Dallas Howard in the big final action scene due to her pregnancy (and then the filmmakers couldn't think of a different kind of final battle other than with having one of the female interests captured).

I wish we had seen a Raimi Hydro-Man eventually, what he would have been like and how the special effects and action would contrast with those of Sandman.

I know this forum was around when Spider-Man came out in 2002, but I can’t find the threads for Spider-Man 1 & 2. Have they been deleted?

From what I remember, it was reported that they did film the final scene with Gwen being the one kidnapped. By the time Howard was pregnant, filming was mostly completed (filming complete July 1, 2006 and according to an old interview it looks like she found she was pregnant about a week earlier). However they did have multiple reshoots later in 2006 and early 2007, so that's probably where the change happened.

Earlier actually, 1999. And yeah most posts pre-2006 were deleted several years back. I can't remember what the reason was but I think it had to due a site migration or update.

Which is a shame. I'd love to dig up the thread about the Spider-Man 3 teaser poster and all the lunatics who swore on a stack of bibles they could see Venom in Spidey's eye.

I think there still are some of those threads left if everything after 2005 still exists.

A cool aspect of the original teaser poster for Spider-Man 3 that seems to be forgotten or not well-known today is that when it released people assumed it was a black-and-white photo at first glance, but fans had to deduce on their own that it was in fact the symbiote suit.

I recall there being debates about it at the time. Another testament to the great marketing.

Ah ok, well at least we still have the hype for Spider-Man 3 preserved for now. Thanks for answering.

I remember reading long before Spider-man 3 came out, that Sam Raimi wasn't a fan of Venom and the chances of him appearing in a later movie were slim,at best. However,I think it was revealed later on that Sam just said that so people wouldn't suspect Venom being in part 3? It's hard to remember little details from 15-20 years ago. Anyway...being a massive fan of Venom and the symbiote storyline I was so excited when that poster was released. Then I remember watching the teaser trailer on Attack of the show and losing my mind! lol But I do remember the "Venom in Spidey's eye" topic. And who could forget people thinking Aunt May would turn out to be taken over by Carnage? Wacky times, for sure. But I do miss em'!

Sam never wanted Venom. Avi Arad forced Venom into Spider-Man 3. Raimi himself even said he really had no creative control on the third movie. This is from 2009 when it looked like we were going to get a Spider-Man 4;

"They really gave me a tremendous amount of control on the first two films, actually," Raimi told British magazine Empire. "But then there were different opinions on the third film and I didn't really have creative control, so to speak."
Raimi's first two "Spider-Man" installments were mostly appreciated by critics and fans alike, thanks in no small part to Willem Dafoe and Alfred Molina as the Green Goblin and Doctor Octopus, respectively. But "Spider-Man 3" boasted a complex plot focusing on a trio of villains -- including James Franco's Harry Osborn, Thomas Hayden Church's Sandman and Topher Grace's Venom -- with some fans being distracted by the overload of bad guys.
"The best way for me to move forward on films," Raimi continued, "is that I've got to be the singular voice that makes the creative choices on the film."

I remember this very clearly. I actually remember the exact morning it dropped and I wasn't entirely sure whether it was a black and white photo or not. This poster was just the perfect defintion of a teaser. The entire trilogy had some of the best movie posters ever, imo.

I love how all these years later there’s still no definitive answer for what’s in his eye on that poster.

Just rewatched the trilogy in 4K for the hundredth time and i still freaking love these movies. Spider man 1 & 2 are perfect IMO and while spider man 3 definitely has its issues, i still find it to be a very satisfying conclusion to the trilogy. I even love the final scene opting to go for a more quiet and somber moment instead of a big epic final spidey swing through the city. It just ends with the two characters we started the trilogy with, embracing after having been through so much together. We are left to wonder about where they even go from here, but we know they will always come back to each other. It’s a really simple but perfect ending in my opinion that doesn’t get talked about enough!

The raimi trilogy has so much charm and heart and i wish so badly we had gotten a spider man 4, but i’m just happy with what we did get.

So,I seem to remember a deleted scene in Spider-man 3 where Aunt May was trying to teach Peter how to play the piano. I'm not sure if this was in the novelization,or if they actually shot this scene. But it would explain how Peter was able to play at the jazz club.

To me the absolutely best thing about Spider-Man 3, and why I do think highly of it despite obvious flaws, is the arc of Peter Parker. I think it’s one of the most unique character arcs I’ve ever seen in a superhero film.

When the movie starts out since Peter finally has everything he’s wanted and has found a way to balance his life. As a result he gains an ego or pride and it’s a take on the age old story of how pride cometh before the fall. That pride is the key to his unforgiveness and why his life slowly starts to unravel in the middle of the film.

I know people feel like the Symbiote should’ve been cut out because Venom doesn’t get a whole lot of screen time, but that’s discounting how Raimi & co utilize the symbiote in Peter’s story. The decision to make the symbiote a metaphor for the hatred within Peter is brilliant. I like that you see how his lust for revenge messes with every aspect of his life. It effects his co-workers (Eddie), his friends (Gwen), his family (Aunt May), his love life (MJ), and his enemies (Sandman, and Harry). And he allows these feelings to turn him into someone that he doesn’t even recognize anymore, which is why I love his retort when MJ asks “who are you?”

I love that the way he resolves this dilemma is learning to humble himself at the end.

So yeah I agree that it’s messy and maybe has a bit too much going on, but the story at the core of it is strong and most importantly relatable. You wouldn’t think that a movie that features a superhero with Spider powers being enveloped by an alien goo from space could be relatable, but the writers of this movie actually did it. So while it’s certainly not on the level of Spider-Man 2, I still think that the love and admiration for the Spider-Man character is still prevalent in the storytelling.

I also agree about what you said about the ending. At the time I remember being disappointed that there was no final swing, but since it turned out to be Raimi’s last film I think that was an appropriate way to end it. I think the scene by itself is a microcosm of what Raimi brought to the trilogy. It’s all visually told since MJ and Peter don’t say a word to each other, but them embracing and having a slow dance says all that needs to be said.

Since Lizard and Kraven was a popular fan demand for Spider-Man 4, does anyone felt like it would've worked out back then or not?
I have some neutral thoughts about it for a while after reading the old threads, articles, and the fanfics.

Absolutely; I don’t love where things were going with the actual planned Spider-Man 4 with Vulture and Black Cat, so Lizard/Kraven would have been a more fun pairing for me. And I think the story could have worked.

Black Cat in a Spider-Man movie would have been fun too; just not sure how she would have figured into the plot. And since Raimi had just introduced Gwen Stacy, I’d rather develop her character than jump into a third love interest.

The pairing would definitely make sense, not sure how well Kraven could work, could very well or not so well what with Raimi's tending to want to give the villains some nobility/sympathy and also wanting to mix drama with goofy humor.

It's interesting how little decline in liking the first movie has got, how often most people still put it among their top 3 Spider-Man films.

So it looks like it's been mentioned that Hobgoblin and Alistair Smythe would've been part of the game's development back then.

Wow

20 years ago today I joined this forum. I joined because it was the day they released the first trailer for Spider-Man 2 and I wanted to join in all the hype and excitement for it with the other Spidey fans here.

I remember it like it was yesterday. Practically everyone had Doc Ock in their avatars.
