The Official Lex Luthor Casting Thread - Part 5

DIRECTOR's argument about Meloni's star power would make more sense if he wasn't the guy petitioning for Billy Zane to land the role. I don't understand how Meloni isn't a big enough name for Lex but the guy whose last movie was a direct-to-DVD Scorpion King sequel somehow is.

The same arguments against Meloni for Lex could be used for Henry for Superman. They probably were.

the last "BIG Name" actor to play Lex was basically laughed at, even though I somewhat enjoyed Spacey as Lex...I hope somehow, someway Meloni turns out to be Lex

Not really, they have never chosen big stars to play Superman. It's always been unknowns and little known.

And yeah, Costner and Fishbourne have lots of films under their belts, however, very few of their successes are them in the lead roles.
And the actors I listed that you call acclaimed are what I assume to be the main characters in the movie considering how casting has gone. Adams as Lois; she's a star and a proven box-office draw. Same goes for Crowe and Lane. I wasn't just picking popular actors that have been cast, they are the most well known stars of the movie beside Cavill. Meloni has the same star power because of the show Law and Order. There's a reason he's been on the show for so long with so much support and having a majority of the side story compared to all the detectives from the show.

Law and Order is one TV show. Yes, it is a popular TV show, but if you've never seen it (like I haven't) then chances are you have never heard of Meloni (like I hadn't).

Kevin Costner is miles above Meloni in star power. How you can say that few of his successes had him in a lead role is beyond me...

I would bet money that if I go out in the street right now and say 'Do you know who Kevin Costner is?' the answer would be yes. If I ask the same question about Chris Meloni (bearing in mind i'm in the UK), I'd be incredibly lucky to get a yes.

In fact, i'd say Costner was a much more recongnisable household name than Amy Adams or Michael Shannon, who most of the time when i'm talking about the film, my friends have no idea who i'm talking about.

You could certainly argue that Perry White is being played by someone with as much star power as Meloni. Though personally I think being well known for both Morpheus AND the lead in a popular crime drama, gives Fishburne the slight edge.

But Lex Luthor is a much bigger role than Perry White IMO, and I honestly do think they will hand it to someone with more star power than Meloni.

That’s not a law of nature. And getting a big name actor for the villain comes with risks. There’s a tendency to hand over a lot of screentime to him (and, consequently, reduce the hero’s screentime). And sometimes an unknown for the villain can be the right choice, artistically. Imo, the “unknown” Michael Rosenbaum has been the best Lex to date.

I agree, it's not set in stone.

Just look at Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows... they cast a fairly unknown (i'd never seen him in anything before) Jared Harris as Sherlock Holmes arch nemesis.

So it definitely could happen.

But IMO, that was the one underwhelming thing about that film. I honestly felt an actor with more personality/charisma would have made the banter between the two of them a lot more tangible.

Now that is very true :p

Yeah I agree, I don't think Superman being an unknown has any relevance to Lex Luthor's casting.

It's not the first franchise picture McG has been attached to that almost changed the entire mythology of a beloved property. In the early aughts, McG was attached to "Flyby," a rebooting of the "Superman" series that, thanks to a boldly different take from screenwriter J.J. Abrams, would have made wholesale changes to the origins of Superman, his home planet Krypton, and his main nemesis Lex Luthor. McG ended up exiting the project when the studio was adamant about shooting in Australia. He blames his fear of flying for being "thrown off" that project, calling it his "rock-bottom" moment, which would eventually lead him to taking on his next film, the plane-crash drama "We Are Marshall," as a catharsis.

McG says no final casting decisions had been made on the film, though he did mention one name that, we admit, we hadn't heard before. "We had Robert Downey Jr. locked up to be Lex Luthor, which I think would have been extraordinary," McG enthused. But his pick for the Big Blue Boyscout is actually much less of a surprise. "Ironically, we liked Henry Cavill a lot, but we hadn’t cast him yet," he says of the actor currently wearing the tights in the upcoming "Man Of Steel." "J.J. wrote the script, and we got that to a really good place in the end," he says of the film, the first in a proposed trilogy. "But I’m to blame for [the film not happening]." While we've heard no shortage of superhero movie casting over the years, the idea of a then-low-key Downey Jr. as Lex Luthor is enough to make us wonder a whole score of what-if fantasies, particularly considering his own subsequent ascension to the top of the A-List following "Iron Man."

Thats crazy..I really REALLY like Downey, alot, but I find i'm having difficulty seeing him as Lex. Maybe its because he's IM now.
He might have hit it outta the park like he did with IM tho, we'll never know.

RDJ as Lex? Now that would have been an interesting choice. :atp:

How was Lex written in that film?

Isn't that the one where Lex is a secret Kryptonian?

Yeah, I think it was.

I like RDJ and I think he could make a great (traditional) Lex, but I'm trying to imagine him as that ridiculous secret Kryptonian Lex and in my mind, the big reveal is playing out like Judge Doom revealing himself as a toon at the end of Roger Rabbit. Thank God that awful movie never came to fruition because McG is an idiot who should never be handed the keys to ANYTHING and JJ Abrams, though I like him, had some awful ideas for Superman.

thank god would of been another miscast luthor lol who would not been physically imposing or intimidating at all

That AND woulda been an annoyance as well.

Lex Luthor also eats Tony Starks for breakfast if you know what I mean.

I do, but my dirty mind thinks otherwise. ;):p

Meh, you guys are underrating RDJ. He can play a ruthless, even scary SOB when he tries. But I do think that he would have been terrible in THAT version of Lex Luthor. But with a good script, he could kill it.

Sorry, but that's really a matter of taste regardless of his talents. All I see when I look at him is cocky Stark, Sherlock and also cocky RDJ himself. I'll never be a fan of him.

But you must assimilate. ASSIMILATE! :argh:

:o

I imagine RDJ would of played as Lex Luthor similar to his villainous character in US Marshalls in terms of performance.

I really don't think Meloni is Lex, its funny cause (if) we get a sequel to MOS and they cast Lex we'll be like remember those Meloni is Lex rumours? lol

the worst thing that could happens is that in the sequel we get lex luthor and the actor is not as good as Meloni.

My pick for Lex has been, is, and always will be Jason Isaacs. I think he'd be perfect.

Watch some of his films before 2008. He's come off uber-cocky since Iron Man, but he wasn't always that way.

Yeah, he was good as Chaplin and in Less than zero.
