The Official Lex Luthor Casting Thread - Part 7

I like Daniel Craig for the role, because he has a way of seeming innately deadly. As James Bond, even when he is just standing still in an office, it seems there is an energy within him that is about to burst out and break someone's neck.

Given that Lex is a bald man in a suit that does a lot of standing still in offices, I think we need someone like that.

Still keeping Vince Vaughn as my wild-card backup, though.

always liked craig for lex dude just has a very intimidating look and a very ice cold stare

Am I the only thinking Rosenbaum night be joking?

I'm honestly not sure he is, but I just can't see him as Lex Luthor in this iteration of the Superman tale, he just wouldn't fit in very well in my opinion. He's just not big enough and I don't mean that in a physical respect, I mean he's just not the actor the part really requires, I suppose. It's tough to quantify. I can see him easily in the role of Lex on "Smallville" but that's about it.

I only bring it up because he got tired of playing Lex on Smallville or at least the direction the show was going anyway. And he's a pretty goofy guy in real life.

I could see him as Lex, but he's already played the character in a different version. So, it would be kinda weird to see him in the role.

I never followed Smallville past the first season but I did catch an episode now and again: exactly what happened to Lex's character? I know later on there was something about the clone, the red headed kid that eventually was known as Lex, but I'm not clear on what the hell happened with Rosenbaum himself: was there some contract dispute and he wanted more cash or something or was he truly just bored and wanted out?

Don't want to derail the thread, but I am curious on that aspect.

As as for him moving to the big screen, I suppose I can't see him as Lex because on Smallville he was never that "bad" to me in the time that I did see him in action. Always conniving, sure, and always with ulterior motives but I just never saw him as pure evil, again it's hard to quantify.

In terms of Rosenbaum, he was bored and wanted out since the show went on longer than imagined and they really weren't going anywhere. Some fans gave him crap for it as if he owed them something.

The show just crazy in terms of bringing the character back. It's been some time since I've watched it. But, pretty much Lex tried to fulfill some prophecy and control and/or kill Clark. The Fortress crumbled and Lex was nowhere to be found and presumed dead. He later turned up to do one final mission against Clark, which was just to make sure he and Lana could never be together since Lana got powers, but was full of Kryptonite. Later on, Darkseid took over Lionel's dead body or whatever and resurrected Lex or something like that. Tess Mercer (his sister) erased all of his memories from the start of the show, so he hates Superman, but doesn't really know why or something like that. You can read that nonsense here, starting at Season 7...

The clone was one of many. He grew up to a teen and turned evil. But, then he became good. Turned out he was also a clone of Clark, so he became Conner Kent...

The only time I thought he was pure evil within the show was the episode that he split into a good (Alexander) and evil (Lex) versions of himself. It was one of those moments where you saw how great the show could've been under someone else's direction. The episode was "Onyx" and other than that, he was just pretty much struggling with being good and turning into the guy Lionel (in the beginning) wanted him to be. I guess he's "evil" in the Season 11 comics, but I haven't read them.

Anyway, I don't have any choices for a Lex closer to Cavill's age. But, if they wanted to go older, I love the idea of Kelsey Grammer if the dialogue is great.

Wow, what a mess all that turned into on Smallville, kinda glad I never stuck with it episode by episode, geez. 10 seasons... and I know people that want it back on the air, good lord. :D

I stopped caring and took it for what it was. It became a lot more entertaining even when it was really bad/silly/whatever.

Alexis Luthor.

Perhaps if we can change his race we can change his/her gender. I <3 Julianne Moore, anyway.

When Rosenbaum left, Smallville went to crap. The show was really about Clark and Lex on a coliision course. So watching Lex's storyline was very compelling. But when he left there was nothing left. They started bring every other character. But a lot of these characters would be played by actors already on the show. Like Lois Lane was posessed by the spirit of Faora.

Dumb. But I stuck with the show just to see Tom Welling be Superman.......but he never put on the suit. The finale was so bad. 2 hour finale. 1st hour on the wedding the next 55 minutes with Clark still discrovering himself and the next is a very far away digital Superman. And A close up would be Clarks head with a cape in the background.

Very frustrating.

10 freakin' seasons of a TV show and people stuck with it from start to finish and their only reward in the long run for all their patience was... <drumroll please> a shirt rip to show the House of El symbol for what, 3/10ths of one second? Damn, what a letdown. ;)

Look at the cast of Man of Steel and consider that for Lex. Big yet classy.

Thanks. The show is 10000000000000% the genius of Phil.

Will be two shows. One is the traditional discussion in the vein of the other Superman films (thorough but fun with debating and our brand of humor) and Phil and mine live reactions to seeing it together for the first (and second) time in NOLA. My lard ass will be in the flesh. I apologize in advance.

I don't think he's big enough both physically and as a star. I think whoever is cast as Lex should be able to stand about as tall as Henry and look almost as impressive. I also don't see him as the Lex that would fit in the MoS universe. He was good on Smallville, but that's a whole different situation.

I've heard others mention that he might have a better chance at lobbying for the Flash which I kinda agree with. He did play Wally West, but I would hope that if they bring Flash on screen that they would start with Barry Allen. Not sure how he'd approach that role, but at the moment it seems like a better choice for him than Lex.

Re: Cranston as Lex Luthor

Cranston is a powerhouse actor for sure. Somebody that is over 35 and now reaching the stride of his career, and I love him in about anything he does. Ironically he is turning into a modern day Gene Hackman, I think. "Bryan Cranston is in this? He's always good." But... I just don't see Luthor. It's not about physicality at all. I just don't see that character coming from him. I told my friend Ed this, that I didn't see him as a supervillain, "Greatest Crimanal Mind Of Our Time" scientific genius type. He came back with "Breaking Bad, dude." Walter is a desperate small town puissant. Lex needs to be bigger than life. Just my two cents.

Which is why MOS2 needs Denzel!!! Seriously, how awesome would Denzel be? :oldrazz:

Jude Law would be pretty cool too though. Has he ever lost his British accent for a movie though?

If this were 10-15yrs ago I would not bat an eye having to think about Denzel as Lex. Now... That time has passed. But if we want to rethink things like race (I'd like to think I am at least open minded about it) why not the OPERATIVE himself? Chiwetel E. has shown that he can do a charismatic, rational cold blooded intellectual killer. Why not him for MOS2-3? If MARVEL aint getting to green lighting BLACK PANTHER we may as well get him for a role like this before he gets to Denzel's age.

Everyone has to agree with Asr, as he has a Massive Attack avatar.
