I don't think that's how chemistry is created. IMO, either two people have it or they don't. So whichever actress has that spark with Henry is who I want for the job. And you can't know that until they test no matter how well two people look paired together.
No, that's a myth. Chemistry is not like magic, there's always a reason for things. Here's how to figure it out. Just ask yourself the question.

Ask yourself: why do certain people have chemistry and others don't? There must be a reason. What could it be? It's because certain people's natural screen qualities compliment each other, opposites usually work well, but it doesn't have to be, just different but in a complimentary way.

That's why Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan worked so well together. Meg Ryan is soft and sweet and Billy Crystal was more sharp and cynical, yet also likable with the same softness under the surface. That's why Tom Hanks works with Meg Ryan, too, he has that same sharpness with softness underneath. This is just a quick example, but my point is that "chemistry" has a source and it has reason and if you're capable of perceiving and understanding actors' screen qualities, you can predict who will have chemistry. Most people don't perceive actors' screen qualities, they just look at them and go, "I like them," or "I don't like them," but they don't understand what vibe that actor is really giving off, especially beyond the surface.

If you have this ability to perceive, you can talk about potential chemistry intelligently. You may not always be right, but you'll have a pretty good gauge. And I'm telling you, with Henry Cavill as Superman, with someone that polished and regal and truly otherworldly, the person who will have chemistry with him is a woman who is REAL, not an icy femme fatale or actress who's also a supermodel in her spare time. Just look at Chris Reeve and Margot Kidder. Does everything that I'm saying apply? Yes. Does it work? Yes. If Olivia Wilde is cast, she will not have chemistry with Cavill. Neither will Mila Kunis or anyone in that mold. It's about certain molds "clicking." With Cavill, you need someone who is real and likable, and has a sharp intelligence, but also a girlish side, so that she's attracted to Superman's strength and power and moral compass (because she has all those traits herself), but so she's also in awe of him like a school girl with a crush on the captain of the football team.

You can save this post of mine and see if I'm right. When whoever gets cast as Lois gets cast and if she's good with Cavill or not, apply her to my set of criteria and tell me if I know what I'm talking about.

I predicted Ledger far surpassing Jack Nicholson and giving a career performance as the Joker and everyone thought I was crazy, busy saying, "What? the guy from 10 Things I Hate About You?" I predicted Henry Cavill getting cast as Superman when everyone said he's already been disqualified for a mountain of reasons because I could tell his career was in the right place and he had the right qualities for it and everyone laughed at me and called me a "troll." And I predicted the failure of Brandon Routh as Superman saying that he was a bad actor and didn't have charisma and that was before the movie came out. What are people saying about him now? How did I know these things were going to happen? Because I know actors. I can tell how they're going to be before they be. I'm a movie director, it's my job, I have to go out on a limb and cast actors in roles before they've already played the role and *gasp* predict how they're going to do and my career depends on it, so I've gotten pretty good at it over the years.

So you can take my words to the bank. You need an actress with the regal Cavill who's real, not a male-fantasy, not otherworldly, not unattainable, or else they won't have chemistry and their romance won't be romantic.

And Lois is always an attractive woman, not like Margot Kidder.

Atractive, but REAL, not a supermodel looking.

There's a comic book where Clark talks to ma Kent about Lois, and he says "She's pretty, but not a Hollywood star look".

:cwink:

I know that people will answer sayind that Olivia Wilde can look "normal" without makeup and blablabla...tired.

The Olivia is too hot thing is ridiculous. Isn't Cavill too handsome for Superman then? :whatever:

Too handsome for Superman? No such thing. If he can't make the ladies swoon, then he's no Superman :csad:

On House she looks just fine, pretty without being all red carpet glammed up.

Now, I'm a dude but I don't think Reeve was as handsome as Cavill and people still love him. I don't think anyone will hate the movie because Lois Lane is a beautiful woman. :whatever:

I just don't see Monaghan as Lois at all. It's the same thing that I have with Evangeline Lilly.

Totally agree with you, that's what I see, but I couldn't explain to people.:yay:

Wow, way to spin nothingness arguments out of nothing that ultimately lead nowhere. "Glammed up" has nothing to do with it. So any woman who's not "glammed up" looks normal to you?

And the logic of "If Lois isn't hot doesn't that make Cavill too handsome for Superman?" What? Do you even understand these characters at all? You do know you're on a Superman forum, right?

Here's the line straight from the comic: "She's ... I don't know ... not as beautiful as a movie star, but she has ... a quality. Something I've never seen in any other woman. Almost a fire in those big, dark eyes. For just a moment it seemed as if something passed between us. A spark."

Not as beautiful as a movie star! Do you think when they cast someone who's supposed to be "not as beautiful as a movie star," they might wanna cast, I don't know, someone who's... not a drop-dead beautiful movie star!

There are plenty of attractive A-list actresses out there who aren't supermodel gorgeous and completely wrong for the role. We can have our cake and eat it too on this one.

I agree about Evangeline Lilly, as she's really only demonstrated one character type to the world (and not a very Lois-like one at that). But Monaghan has shown she can do attitude/spunkiness/fun (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang), earthy toughness (Gone Baby Gone, Trucker), and general warmth and likability (any of her other, more typical roles), so unlike Lilly, I have no problem seeing the makings of Lois Lane in her. It's clear as day for me. But different strokes and all that.

I like this, backing up your opinion with some substance. Are you sure you belong here?

You probably did state why you're pulling for MEW, but could you do so again? I really want to see what the appeal is for the MEW fan's. She does nothing for me.

Who is your pick for Lois? All your responses are so well thought out, you seem to know what you're talking about.

Why thank you, and I'm finding your posts quite interesting as well, btw, even if I don't agree about Wilde's looks.

Are you sure you belong here?
I just have a lot of feelings. [/Mean Girls]

Good explanation of chemistry, but you forgot visual distinction: the two romantic partners have to look different from one another. If they look like they could be brother and sister, it goes far in canceling them both out.

I am not sue about this choice but what about Alexis Bledel

You probably did state why you're pulling for MEW, but could you do so again? I really want to see what the appeal is for the MEW fan's. She does nothing for me.

I can see her as Lois Lane because she's talented, likeable, pretty, but not a gorgeous model Hollywood star. And I can see her and Cavill as a couple.

I think people like her because she played (very well) cool characters, like John McClane's daughter and Ramona Flowers.

But It's a case of taste too.

I really liked her in Scott Pilgrim too, but that movie seems very divisive around here. Some fans of the comic think she missed the mark with Ramona, but I haven't read it so I don't know if they're right or not. But as someone who only saw the movie, I thought she did a great job with the character.

She was flat out boring as that chick. I get that it's her character to be passive, but Jesus, could she make it any more uninteresting? As hot as she is, I wouldn't fight Chris Evans or Brandon Routh or Asian twins for that. I actually wouldn't mind Evans beating me up, because he would be nice about it.

She isn't in a Lois Lane look here, but if people like to post Wilde's modeling pictures, then I decided to post MEW photoshoots as well. :woot:

Couldn't agree with you more.

In a lot of ways, it's why I think you have to find someone who is naturally like Lois in a lot of ways. Yes an actress is supposed to be able to play different roles... but that chemistry can't be faked. And since I see Cavill having a natural air about him that just screams Superman, I think whoever they cast as Lois will have too equally naturally encompass Lois. That's why Lois and Clark have chemistry, and it's the only way Cavill and whoever they cast will too IMO.

Here's the line straight from the comic: "She's ... I don't know ... not as beautiful as a movie star, but she has ... a quality. Something I've never seen in any other woman. Almost a fire in those big, dark eyes. For just a moment it seemed as if something passed between us. A spark."

I adore that line. It's not something that often comes across on film or TV, because a lot of the time the actresses they cast ARE drop dead gorgeous.

The thing is, to me, Lois Lane is not just some hot peice of ass in a Superman movie. She is my NO.1 favourite character of all time. Even more than Superman! She is my role model as a woman, Clark's reasons for loving her are how I imagine the perfect relationship to be, and it is incredibly important to me that they portray her properly, and in a way that a lot of people will relate to.

I really don't see Olivia Wilde accomplishing this, or any director who cast her in the role having a true understand of the Lois i'm talking about.

The one thing that consoles me, is that they haven't announced it yet. That maybe just because she isn't a big part of the movie.

But if she is, that shows me that they are giving it ALOT of consideration, and that they are struggling (just like I am TBH, in considering absolutely every suggestion on this forum) to find someone who is perfect for the role. But at least I feel like when they do, she really will be perfect.

i love that people are already claiming this actress will not have chemistry with henry

it is hilarious LOL

I wouldn't mind Bledel. :o
