Age of Ultron The Official Scarlet Witch Thread - Part 2

Seeing them both together already elevates my excitement over DOFP. Seeing QS hold her and go all supersonic would make my life.

Judging by the wood chopping scene, we get a bit of an idea of what she'll be able to do with her powers.

Can Wanda/Scarlet Witch mess with people's minds/show them visions in the comics?

No her actual power is to control probability effectively causing what she calls "hexes" or bad luck to people around her.

No. Whedon is reinterpreting her powers.

To be fair, her powers are kind of reinterpreted whenever she appears in the comics. After all, she was able to use her powers to strip the majority of the mutant population of their powers just by saying three words.....pretty safe to say she can do whatever she wants

No they are more straight up telekinesis in Avengers similar to Jean Grey.

Telekinesis doesn't let you get inside the heads of people and start messing with their thoughts, dreams, visions, and nightmares. If not outright magic, then Wanda is both a telekinetic and telepath ---- which, yeah, makes her pretty much the MCU's version of Jean Grey. :P

It should be interesting to see if Olsen's version of SW has the potential to eventually become the favorite female superhero in the MCU, surpassing even that of BW.

Look at SW's pose in the middle of Ultron drones

Close enough :shr:

if this is what Josh is doing with her, he basically made her Jean Grey, with both of her powers :whatever:

I'm willing to bet that Joss is going to make chaos magic the basis for Wanda's powers instead of psionics. That would be more canonical.

Ive been reading books for years and her powers always confused me. They are pretty open to interpretation based on whomever is writing her

Ditto that!!

The probabilities w.bad luck is easy enough to grasp but in the comics it sooo much more. Out of all the mutants she's the one whose powers I never truly got a handle on- and the funny thing is in some ways that adds to her appeal. But it also always felt like Marvel was "cheating" with her as well, just making stuff up when it suited them.

I agree, I do know about Scarlet Witch in the comics, but that's why I asked if she can show visions/mess with people's minds because even in the comics her power set confuses me. I don't know what her EXACT powers are because they seem to interpret or change it all the time lol.

But for the film, I don't mind if they make her MCU's Jean Grey. It makes sense actually for Scarlet Witch.

Add me to the list of having no idea what she can do with her powers in the comics, maybe Joss is with us and just chose new powers.

It would definitely be easier for the general non-comic reading audience to grasp and understand

Plus, the general audience know about Jean Grey because of the X-Men films, so for Scarlet Witch to have similar telekinesis powers to Jean will be easy to grasp and understand for a general audience.

Joss will not make SW a complete Jean rip off though. SW seems to have projectile energy too.

Well just looking at the trailer, she clearly does a hex bolt/whatever you want to call it. This is something Jean can't do/hasn't done in the X-Men movies.

Her powers aren't that confusing. You've just got to learn which stories carry more weight in canon (a skill you kinda have to develop, reading comics, long term).

I own practically every comic that Scarlet Witch has ever appeared. I know her powers. She has probability manipulation and chaos magic. Probability manipulation is hard to explain to a movie audience, so it has probably been dropped and replaced by telekinesis. In the comics, Wanda displays telekinesis, which I attribute to chaos magic spells. So the movie version's powers will be telekinesis and magic. She will be nerfed, because all MCU characters are nerfed.

Giving people hallucinations is definitely not something she's been able to do in the comics, but it may be a slight takeoff on what she did in "House of M," which was to put all the characters in another reality. This made no sense to anyone who had read the comics before, because she was never that powerful. So a lot of us just assumed she was doing some kind of illusion spell, and that might be the inspiration for her having that kind of power here.

On the other hand, if the visions aren't just illusions but glimpses of a possible future, then I don't know what her powers are exactly. But it is true that her powers fluctuate a lot in the comics from writer to writer, and Whedon can make up what he wants.

Anyway, when discussing her power levels in the comics, just ignore House of M. She was never that powerful before, hasn't been that powerful since, and it was retconned into being her possessed by big cosmic power thingie. Unfortunately it's the only story with the Scarlet Witch that many modern readers have read, because it was an entry point for many readers and she was banned from the comics for many years thereafter. But hopefully she won't have that kind of power in the films, ever, and it won't be nerfing her, it'll just be correcting House of M's mistake.

To be fair, Wanda isn't the only character who ever inexplicably got powers far greater than any they had ever displayed before. Speaking of Jean Grey, the whole Dark Phoenix saga came out of left field and made the character basically a goddess, much like House of M Wanda, whereas before she was just a mid-level telepath/telekinetic. Same with characters like Franklin Richards, Iceman, Gambit, Emma Frost and other "lower-level" characters who suddenly acquire godlike "omega level mutant" designations. And "what if" and alt-dimension stories are rife with that sort of thing --- the Avengers Forever saga featured frickin' Rick Jones becoming the key figure in an eternal war that spanned multiple timelines.
