Joe is good, but his nose bothers me. I know it's being nit-picky but he has a huge curve in his nose when you look at it from the side. I've always thought of Superman as being the embodiment of the Grecian Ideal, perfect in body and mind. Physical beauty, virtue, intelligence all hand in hand, his outside form a physical manifestation of his perfection.

But that's just my interpretation of Superman.

For me, I'm not a fan of all Joe's previous performances. He either plays *****ebags, meatheads or sex objects.

He doesn't have that All American Boyscout quality for Superman. I've never seen him convey that kind of 'goodness'

He'd make a decent villain henchman though.

Joe should not be Superman his eyes are at two different levels and his nose is tooo pointy.

EXACTLY!
Chris Reeve was Superman off screen and on screen.. he was a great embassador for the role.. As should our new Superman.

Superman isn't a role.. It's a life choice :D

Having been involved in the television and film industry back in the 80's I will assure you that Reeves did not display the Superman traits off screen. He was far from the macho manly man that we associate with his role as Superman.

I think people believe Reeves is what Superman should look like simply because he is who became film's version of Superman that is known to most people of the mainstream population still alive today, so they make an assumption that is what Superman should look like. I don't buy into that sentiment.

Agreed

Nothing wrong with Manganiello's nose IMO.

I agree. It's also mainly generational. For baby boomers my parents age, George Reeves will always be Superman. They grew up watching him on TV in the 50's and to them Superman is George Reeves.

I think over the past ten years, whether fanboys like or not, alot of kids have grown up with Tom Welling as their Superman .

Now for people may age Chris Reeve was our Superman .However ,that doesn't mean because we have an emotional connection to him or see his version as the definitive version, that doesn't mean every actor who plays the role from now on his to fit into that mold.

It used to amaze me as well, but I've gotten used to it. It's only because he looks like Reeve, has the height, and is a nice guy in real life. Not based on actual acting talent.

Yep.

I can't believe some people here are willing to rule out an actor because of the shape of his nose. I don't know if Joe is a good actor, but if he is, I'd take that over a stiff like Routh any day, no matter how perfect Routh might look for the role.

It's one thing to say "no" to an actor if you don't think he looks the part at all. It's something else entirely to rule someone out over nit-picky bullsh**.

I think people are being nit picky because they're not blown away by his acting, if he had all the other qualities/strengths going for him we might be less harsh, I guess some of us just don't see superman when we look at Joe. . .

I get that... I can see where you're coming from on this one. Like I said, I haven't seen enough of his acting to judge. But I also think some people here will rule out anyone, regardless of acting ability, over some miniscule physical detail.

An actor is too short. An actor isn't bulked up enough (even though Reeve and Routh weren't very bulky when they were cast). An actor's nose is too long. An actor's eyes are too close together. It's really pretty silly.

I personally feel the face is the most important part of the superman actor's look, people can bulk up and as long as they look in good shape, height, probably a 6ft minimum for me. . .

But acting is all about the face, expression, emotion, I think especially with superman it's the eyes, they need to look sincere. . .

In short, I think if the actor has the right face, other aspects can be overlooked.

Well everyone is going to be picky.

We want the Actor playing Superman to be PERFECT for the role.

Not just 'kinda looks like him' or 'is a really good actor' or 'is one of my favourite actors'.

I think it's important to remember that we haven't even been given much of an idea (other than the TV actor rumour) as to whos in the running. Every little bit of this discussion at the moment is our own personal fantasies.

I love Matt Bomer. From the second I saw him, I saw my Clark Kent/Superman. I have no watched all the White Collar I could get hold of. I completely understand people's complaints about his height and build. He's kind of small. And the more I look at him, the more i'm unsure if he can pull of the Superman stuff well enough. He's just too cute.

But that doesn't mean i'm going to stop fantasising about him in the role. It doesn't mean i'm going to stop supporting him. That I wouldn't scream with happiness if he's picked. He's my Superman FANTASY.

Everybody on this thread has theirs. That's what manips are for. Realising that fantasy.

When it comes to who is actually going to be cast, a small part of me hopes it's not Bomer... because he's not PERFECT. He is too short. Fact. I have to face that.

And someone like Joe is also flawed for this role.

I have watched him in a few roles now, and I've never seen anything Supermanly on his face. He's played a few silly roles too that make him look like a total *****e. He does have a bit of a funny nose, and TBH, it just would weird me out having Flash Thompson from Spiderman playing Superman...

There are no perfect suggestions on this site BTW...

Agreed. For me it's always going to be the face. When they announce it, if I don't look at him and immediately go 'yeah, he's Superman' i'm gonna be crushed.

It's different from Superman Returns, because I wasn't so involved in spoilers and forums back then.

This is becoming a bit of an obsession :hehe:

I wonder if they'll consider Vincent Chase, even though he already played Aquaman.

Manganiello was at the SDCC promoting himself for the part, so that would be where that rumor started.

Also, according to the Supermanhomepage and SDCC, Welling has been approached about a Superman movie. No specifics though.

I do disagree with some of the comments about some of the nit picky comments. I don't consider wanting to see a physically imposing stature (tall and built) for Superman being nit picky. I see that as a necessity and not something I want to see them compromise on.

You see, I firmly believe something that falls under nit picky is going to have to be sacrificed in order to get the best actor for the part. I've been saying that since before Returns. All I want is to see a real actor in the role, not some male model piece of cardboard like Cain/Welling/Routh.

As far as Joe M goes, I still need to see more of his acting. As a True Blood fanatic, I'm still waiting on them to let him flex some character muscle for a change. With Joe's look, I dig it, he fits the bill physically. I'd believe in Joe fighting Darkseid or Braniac before I would believe in Routh, I'd be afraid Brandon's Superman would scream like a girl after some omega beam blasts. And Joe obviously loves the character and reads the comics, isn't being a fanboy half of what made Routh so popular? So those people would be won over eventually, given history. I just need to see more of his acting before I give it the definite stamp of approval.

At the very least, Joe can't be any more wooden than Routh.

Its clear that he has a crooked nose, but I could picture people close to him to fix it if he wants the role (or even the casting people at WB)... and some people arguing that even his eyes are un even:whatever:

I say, even with the crooked nose he looks more supermanish that most of the names thrown in here:

And yeah, he has mostly done meat head and *****e bags roles in the past, but in interviews he comes out as a very nice guy (although for some reasons he seems a bit shy... or maybe its just my impression)
