I've seen enough of Hamm's work to know he could play any interpretation of Clark Kent that the script requires, whether it be shy and retiring, or bumbling (hopefully not) or a confident but modest reporter. . .

The guy's range is more than adequate, also with a simple change of hair style his appearance alters enough to make it believable that people wouldn't suspect Clark of being superman!. . .

As for being ugly, that must make most of us Quasimodo! :) . . . most people are capable of taking a bad photo. . .

Hamm is perfect for Kingdom Come movie or The Dark Knight Returns movie.
-and all top consideration coming from WB actors.

Levi=Timberlake, i hate them both.

Two of the sexiest actors in the business today. Couldn't go wrong with either one (except that Laurie really is too old and scrawny now). Both are classically handsome men instead of the meathead boytoy names that have been thrown around here.

Of course, Laurie couldn't play Superman. I remember back in Returns when Singer had him on the shortlist to play Perry White. I think he would have been awesome but Laurie couldn't do it due to the conflict with House MD.

Back then, I was sad to hear that because I thought Singer could pull off that casting (given he directed the pilot of House MD, and I think his Bad Hat Harry team is still involved with it). However, given how badly Returns turned out, I'm now happy Laurie wasn't wasted on that flick :-)

I'd love to see Laurie play Perry in Nolan's film. I think his wit, sarcasm and almost mercilessly direct dialogue would make for a very interesting Perry White. Nolan was right to cast Michael Caine as Alfred and it was certainly a unique casting decision.

Laurie for White would be going down the same alley. A brilliant actor and certainly the direction Nolan likes to go when he talked about surrounding the film with top talent.

Haha. I don't have a problem with his face, just his height/stature, and to a lesser extent his age.

Superman is like Thor, Hercules, Conan... etc. There's a huge physical component.

No way Hamm meets that.

I don't know... I was watching Mad Men last night and Hamm looks more imposing than every single other actor on that show. As long as they don't cast anyone in the movie who is Chris Hemsworth-huge, I think Hamm could have the right physical presence for Supes.

Bale was like 29 or 30 for Batman Begins? I wish they would go the same route for Superman.

I would agree that's an ideal age... trouble is, the names that keep coming up usually seem to be guys in their early to mid 20s or their late 30s/early 40s.

hamm could be the kingdom come superman, or a modern day version of alex ross's bruce wayne. having him play an established superman doesn't really makes sense unless it's set far into the future. an established superman would look 33-35 yrs old max. hamm looks way older.

Anyone remember Christopher Heyerdahl who played Zor-El in Smallville? I think he'd be a sweet choice for either Lex Luthor or Brainiac. Just a thought.

a bit off-topic but is it just me or Jon Hamm looks like Jason Isaacs

If they want to go with Hamm as Superman, I would be on board a Jason Isaacs for Luthor bandwagon in a heartbeat.

I have changed my mind I want HAMM and egg head

If Hamm It Up can look like this in the suit.....than sure he should be given a shot as Supes.

He has a loooong way to go though before he can look like that in the suit that's for sure!

For brainiac, maybe, but N.O. for Lex. And excuse me for ranting, but why is it that in 9 out of 10 times someone suggests an actor for Lex it's some bald guy? Cant people see past that? Just casting a guy because he's bald, but doesn't necessarily have the right look. That's kinda the same thing with casting a Superman-actor just because he has the right body, but really looks like **** facially. This is what manips are for and they work rather well if they're good.

Here's another up and coming TV actor that could work as Superman if he bulks up.

Lucas Bryant, star of the new science fiction SyFy series "Haven." He's got a low voice and gives off a Bruce Wayne vibe onscreen, but I think he can be transitioned towards Nolan's Superman.

Okay, so i haven't been on for a while, and after reading the last 10 pages, i've discovered a very simple and shallow reason why I would say no to most of the people suggested so far.

I don't think any of them are hot.

It may seem silly, but I want Superman to be gorgeous. I mean, don't get me wrong, no matter who is cast, I am going to watch and probably love it. Because it's Superman, and I don't think it's possible to do a Superman movie that I wouldn't enjoy a little bit.

But it would just be so much better if I fell in love with the guy. If every girl in the audience fell in love with the guy. If they all knew exactly why this was the guy to bring the independent single woman Lois Lane to her knees.

Routh had a lot of faults. But he did play the kind of Superman that I fell in love with. I just want them to find another guy like that.

It's more important than just me anyway. It is important to appeal to women if they wanna make a lot of money. Why do you think the Twilight movies are so popular? Thought provoking storylines? No, it's because women want to go and stare up at the gorgeous men, and they drag their boyfriends along so they don't have to feel guilty.

No worries man. You never offended me, I just thought it funny and odd at all the back and forth (not just you) amongst opposing supporters.
I dont get offended :awesome: In my line of work you have to have thick skin, and I do.

Mine too. I work in telesales! :(

You thought the depiction of Superman from the DC Online Universe game is evil??

Get outta here with that! :whatever:

Oops my mistake... he was actually really nice while he was burning his enemies to death.

On video his nose comes off more normal.

Actually, it wasn't until watching recent episodes of True Blood that I even noticed the nose problem. In pics it's not that bad.

It's funny because there are those complaining about the nose that are promoting the wimpy, metrosexual actors for Superman saying they can use lifts, camera angles, etc. to make them look bigger. It's much easier to fix up the bridge of a nose on someone than doctor up the whole body. Just saying...

I don't see how a nose job is easier than wearing lifts in your boots and building up muscle.

I'm sure Jon Hamm's consideration by WB/Legendary has something to do with this:

Looks like a good movie. But didn't get much of an idea of what Hamm is like as an actor from that.

his acting is pretty good, check true blood, i caught a few new episodes and the guy can ACT! i was suprised, he even had that boyscout feel to his character. I can see him as a good push for this role

I agree he can act, and that he has a nice feel to him. He's definitely playing the 'gentle on the inside, powerful on the outside' thing really well. It's really only his look that's a problem for me... and the flash thompson role.

If there's one thing I like about Chris Nolan more than anything else, it's that he's the type of creative that doesn't make movies for the sake of making movies. He, Jonah, and Goyer make a film because they have a great story. It's like after Begin, he insisted that he would not even consider a sequel unless they got the story right. That's how he operates. If Chris doesn't think there's anything worth telling, he doesn't do it. Begins wasn't set up for a sequel initially. It could have stood alone with Batman flying away after speaking with Gordon. Sure, it's great that Nolan made a second film, but we're only getting the third because as he charted the course for #2, the story elements for a final #3 were moving about.

Same goes for Superman. I don't doubt how many great writers have said it's genuinely hard to write Superman stories. Sure, the animated movies and JLA/JLU have done some great things, but there's a lot in animation that you can get away with that doesn't translate to live action.

Chris, David, and Jonah have ONE great Superman story, and that's what they want to tell. It might have some flashbacks, it might not. Ultimately, whether it's due to the IP fight, Nolan has one idea, one story and this is going to be Superman ala Prestige and Inception -- one awesome story told by arguably one of the greatest directors and creative team around today.

And I think we all really need to be amendable to that. Sure, the WB and Legendary probably want sequels. Sure, they probably want a 20 something cast to play the Man of Steel so they can sell action figures, videogames, and more comic books.

The Nolans could care less about all that. They got a brilliant take, and that's what they're going to do.

And legally, as I suggested, this could be one of the last Superman films we see for a long time. Possibly the last one in some of our lifetimes (come on, it took almost 20 years to get Returns).

Man of Steel could go down as the last hurrah for the WB's Superman. And that's fine with me. I'm just glad right now that we're even getting this film because the Superman license is ripe for a legal quagmire starting in 2013.

The Siegel Estate can effectively *kill* Superman by squatting on the license and taking the WB to court to enjoin anything Superman related until the fight is finished. The WB may not want to pay the arguably high amount the Estate is going ask for. IOW, expect a dragged out legal fight that could ice Superman for a while.

If not for Nolan leading this, there’s probably no way the WB would even consider green-lighting this project. It’s essentially a $200 million investment that will only have two chances to bring in major revenue (theatrical release and then DVD/blu-ray release).

So to get back to casting, Jon Hamm easily looks capable to play the part right now, as in next year for 2012. That’s all the Nolans are thinking about right now, and I sincerely doubt anyone in the WB is going to tell Chris who he should cast. If he’s going older, and all indication are that he is, Levi is probably on the WB wishlist. Hamm, Fox and others are likely on Nolan’s.

We can all easily guess which list will win at the end.

Love this post. Agree with all your points.

This just in. . .

"It's HAMMer time"

I actually feel sick when I look at this. He looks WAY too much like someone's dad. In fact he would have made a great young Jonathon Kent. He's definitely got the look for a character like that.

I don`t know. To play Superman you have to transmit kindness and toughness and i have a hard time seeing that kinda of kindness through Jon Hamm and Joe M eyes. Besides, Hamm is waaaaaaaay too old for the role. Why not Michael Trucco instead?

Agreed. Routh had the kindness and no toughness, same with Reeve (though he was pretty good at toughness in Superman 3).

I'm tired of Caviezel and Cavill being brought up all the time. Hamm would be a refreshing change of pace.

Hamm and Joe M are taking up most of the discussion. Cavill has hardly been mentioned in the last 15 pages, and Caviezel is only just being mentioned again... which seems like a nice change of pace from Hamm TBH.

Nolan's superman MIGHT NOT be 6'4. Ever think about that. I mean they are looking at Hamm afterall so they must not be to concerned with height.
None of us know what they have in mind, so until they say exactly what they want officially, anyone's guess is as good as another's.

And unless they plan on having him standing next to a big ruler, I just don't see it as that much of a problem.

Yep.

Need an actor who is at least 6'1 or taller....naturally.

Anything under 6'0 for a potential Superman actor is no good.

And yet, everyone LOVED Robert Downey Jnr as Tony Stark. DESPITE his height.

I'm straight. But I can see Hamm is a good looking man. You must be the best looking guy in the world if you can say Hamm is an ugly man.

I think he's hideous... and I'm a woman, not the best looking guy or girl in the world. He looks like someone's dad, and the kind of day who might make some kind of pervy comment at you at that.

Hamm looks like Hugh Laurie IMO.

OMG, I so see it!

I want Hugh as Perry White :D

Okay but only if it's not Hamm as Superman. Otherwise they'd all think it was Perry flying around in tights!

I think it would be great to see hamm as supes go up against a villain twice his size.

I picture a short scene, maybe at the start, with a villain ( not the main villain) the size of hemsworth ( or even bigger) arriving in metropolis.
He starts destroying stuff, ie, smashing cars, knocking down buildings, and screaming out '' surrender'', etc etc.

Superman arrives, and the villain laughs because supes is so much smaller than he. Supes just stands there with his arms crossed, unsmiling.

The villain then hits Supes square in the face, HARD. A Big dust cloud and lots of shatterd windows result from the force of the blow. Car alarms blair out nearby as well.

The villain laughs again. He turns to leave, thinking he's knocked supes into oblivion, but when the dust settles, Supes hasn't even budged an inch from the force of the punch, in fact, His arms are still crossed.

An "AHEM" is heard.

The villain turns and looks back.

Supes is still standing there, staring back at the villain and now, its his turn. 'HE' smiles.

The blood would then drain from said villains face and he turns and tries to hightail it outta there, but with no luck.

Just a short scene at the start to show how powerful supes would be.

To me, replace the word Supes with Buffy, and he for she, and it sounds like a good Buffy episode.
