Jesus, WHICH Nic Cage freakout? There's like 200.

What I've found to be annoying as hell is trying to find the right pose for batman. Problem is, most of the good ones are low res. Surprisingly, I've found the best promo shots on SHH forums

Now that you have main characters out of the way, you'll need high res pictures of other characters or more angled shots. To do this, visit libraries like these.
Dark Knight High Res Shots
Since The Dark Knight was filmed in Chicago, you'll need some shots of the skyline to show some Gotham.

Now go on google and get some nice high res stock photos of...anything. As long as its free to use, I get photos of clouds, cameras, sparks, fires, explosions, animals, storms, monitors, and wires and blend them into my graphic.
As far as making your poster feel more "authentic", it's always good to either leave it completely untouched as a whole, or add in layers of textures. For example, I used this texture over my second poster to give it a "grittier" feel.

Put textures in your graphic as a separate layer and set it to "overlay", "soft light", or another blending mode. Honestly, this is a big reason as to how my graphics come together.
When it comes down to it, though, it's all about how you blend them together. When dealing with photo manipulation or cutting out character from an image, I always use the principle of "less is more". It's fine to leave some edges in...I'm very messy with mine. Use a fairly large soft round-headed brush and gently erase around the figure. You can use the bracket keys ([ and ]) to increase or decrease brush size easily. Also, still using this brush, use the clone stamp to put characters in. Works great.
I use blending modes in photoshop to their full potential. I frequently use Difference, Overlay, Soft Light, Multiply, Dark Light, and Screen depending on what layer I'm working on.
Once you have your image blended and set, make a new layer and go to IMAGE-APPLY IMAGE. Then work on the colors, levels, shadows, brightness and contrast, etc to make everything look more unified. As I said before, most of my stuff looks like complete crap until I actually unify everything through contrast and color.
And a little bit of film grain always helps.
For me, I ALWAYS do my text last, as it needs to fit the graphic and the graphic constantly changes.
Of course, there are a bunch of tutorials online and if you need any specific help, just reply through here or through PM. I'd be glad to help.
Guys, I hate to be *that guy*, but could you stay on topic? I'm not trying to play moderator, it's just kind of frustrating. "fire_rising" probably spent a few minutes writing up that post and it's going to be a huge help to people that are looking to create some fanart. I'm going to quote it again as well.
