The Official 'Thor Rate & Review' thread - Part 1

When people say best Marvel movie they mean "Best Marvel Studios movie" right? Because I still think Spidey 2 and X2 are superior to IM and now Thor.

I find both of those to be at best tied with the bottom of the MCU barrel(TIH, but I haven't seen Thor to give it a ranking yet).

-Loki didn't really come off as evil to me (except for a few notable instances), more misunderstood because of his jealousy and scheming.

I actually liked his Motivation in the Movie.

I liked how he wasn't simply evil because he has been treated differently or anything. Anything he did, he did because he thought it was for the good of Asgard. He still loved Odin and wanted to show that he was capable of doing what neither he nor Thor could. Though he kinda went to extreme measures to proof this. Knowing that he was one of the Frost Giants himself, made him more desperate to proof that he isn't one of those monsters you tell your children about, but that he is indeed the son of Odin.

Definitely prefer him over comic Loki.

I got to see this yesterday at a press screening in Sacremento. I loved it. It may not be perfect but it is a hell of a good time. Hemsworth is spectacular in the role, he nails every aspect of the character and makes you root for Thor throughout the film. The supporting actors are all great, didn't even mind the humor from Portman's sidekick. The action is great, and seeing Thor at full power is really something to behold. It was awesome seeing Renner as Hawkeye, too.
I'd definitely put it up there with the first Iron Man. Marvel really got this one right. Can't wait for Cap.

Still at 94% on RT with 52 reviews. RT may not be the be-all end-all for critic's consensuses but that's still really damned cool to see regardless.

Definitely is. I think the general consensus is that the film is no oscar-winner, but it is a satisfying, fun and action-filled big Summer movie - and that's perfect for a Marvel film (or any comics-based film). There's a lot of positivity towards Thor.

'Zackly, that's what Marvel's all about! That consensus is very Iron Man-esque and that sounds great to me.

It definitely is - I saw Thor last week and (personally speaking) I actually preferred it to Iron Man. More resonance for me, and just an awesome film all round. Can't really speak highly enough of Hemsworth, he's just perfect for it in every department - voice, looks, size, attitude, etc.

One of the few complaints I have is that they showed the good stuff way too early. IMO, the Destroyer and Loki fights just couldn't keep up with the Frost Giant action.

Woot, best part is always the characters for me-- jacked up and ready for this summer!

Now to go write my paper...

I'm the same way. That(and a story that works) are what I look for first and foremost. SFX/action/cinematography etc. all come in a distant second.

Even Hitler's weighing in on the movie:

I've seen it yesterday in 3d. 5/10.

It didn't leave me much, I was expecting much more, maybe I'd need to see it once again but for the time being I don't feel compelled to.
Visually it may be challenging but after a while you get tired of golden towers, lightnings etc.. There is too Much Asgard and too little Thor on Earth.
The acting was OK but nothing special, apart from Anthony Hopkins always above all the others.
The music sucks, the composer tried to make it sound epic but the result is boring and flat, never exciting.
This movie was a real let down.

Ok, now l wait for Cap.

R.

Lol, this is like the exact opposite of 90 percent of every review i've read.

Everyone is complaining about those final fights, but to be honest, I thought they were perfect. You get a long, epic battle with the frost giants that alone is more action than IM 2 had. By the time Thor meets up with Loki to fight, all you care about by that stage is the characters. You want a confrontation, but the words and drama of it all is so great, better than a fight would be anyway. The way they're developed, it wouldn't even make sense for them to have an EPIC battle. Loki is fighting out of desperation and Thor doesn't even want to fight him. It's the breaking point of brewing tension that in the narrative, serves to show Loki finally giving up his plans and lashing out. We needed that, without him COMPLETELY going evil, to develop him and give him motivation for an evil and twisted plot as the villain in Avengers.

Well it is their opinion.lol
I like to read some of the reviews like that, because they see things we might not. It still won't change my own personal opinion.

Yeah, me neither Varth.

I love the comics because of the characters. They are all so strong, so flawed, so deep and so interesting and regardless of the quality of story, or action or special effects, every single one of these films has nailed these characters, and thats what has me hooked every time. It's a shame that some people have a film ruined for them by those other things, because I still get such a huge kick out of just seeing the characters i've loved for years brought to life.

Agreed.

Also this Thor is so high powered that Hulk & Iron Man are going to struggle to match him.

Yup. Hell, I've been on the other end of the coin regarding public opinion of at least one of these films(TDK). It happens. You can't avoid it entirely. Too many different types of people even just in here on the Hype.

Well I hope Whedon shows both Hulk and Iron Man at their full potential(something I still don't think we've seen from either of them yet).

I just hope that the Movies don't repeat what the comics and cartoons have done for so long. Hopefully Hulk and Thor are at least evenly matched. I hate the fact that Hulk almost always comes out on top, simply because his whole strength schtick is his only thing.

I really don't want the question of who's more powerful settled in the film, that's for sure. That's one that should remain open to interpretation forever.

When they're all on the same side united against a resilient opponent I'm sure there will be ample opportunity & reason to do this.

I wholeheartedly agree, but I also would like to see the tension between the two of them, who WANT to have this issue settled :cwink:.

Regarding the balance of power; I really see it easily, that (spoilers, just being careful)
Hulk and IM imo are easy to upgrade powerwise - And if necessary, wouldn't be surprised if some part of repairing the Bifrost involves Thor giving up some power too. It's Cap who's going to be WAAAAY behind. Forget his skills, he really shouldn't be able to hurt them.

I wouldn't mind the big 3 holding the fort or bashing out a bridgehead somewhere, while Cap is an insurgent (maybe along with Hawkeye and Black Widow) breaking in somewhere to stop the whole big bad...
