Thor was the Avenger I really knew the least about. But regardless, I loved the hell out of it. Everything was so epic in scale. I'd rank it almost as good as Iron Man if not equal. The post credits scene didn't get me as pumped for The Avengers as the post credit scenes in IM and IM2 did (though it was still awesome), but [BLACKOUT]Hawkeye's cameo[/BLACKOUT] had me ****ing in my pants.

I think Marvel Studios is batting 100 so far. All of their movies have been great (although IM2 was slightly underwhelming). Thor and Ironman are excellent movies though. I CANNOT WAIT FOR AVENGERS!!!!

Caught the midnight showing I really enjoyed it. Going to see it again to make sure I didn't miss anything.:cwink: First impression is that it is better than IM2 but not better than Iron Man, but that is one of the reasons I will see it again, to make sure I wasn't, in my head, too overhyped about the movie & then feeling like I missed something after I saw it. Which has happened alot with big movies I actually go to the theatre to watch & usually I like the movie the second time alot more. Exceptions to that were The Dark Knight (I don't think that movie could do anything but blow you away the first time you see it) & Revenge of the Sith (Star Wars nut 4 life). Oh, & I wish Doom could be brought into the Avengers. The item I saw at the post credits was best manipulated by the awesome evil might of Dr. Doom!!!

Just saw it in 3D.
Wow. It blew me away.
I liked it better than both Iron Man movies.
I'm happy to see Marvel has expanded the realm of what is possible in regards to bringing in the fantastic without making it look silly.
Asgard, Bifrost, etc. was awesome. I wanted to take some of those scenes home and make em into wall paper or murals.. just freaking fantastic!
Pure art.
It was surreal.
The story was just average but the CGI, 3D, and a million fanboy wow moments made up for it.
Great casting..
This is going to make a ****load of money.
My only complaint is that the movie felt too short.
Avengers should be incredible.
I hope this means Iron Man can face the Mandarin in Iron Man 3.
I hope we get Beta Ray Bill in the sequel!

The best Marvel movie so far. The story was great. I was surprised to see how powerful Thor could be. Not being a comic book reader and basically being introduced in depth to Thor and all of the heroes over the past couple of years, I can say that the movie made me want to start reading the books. Can't wait for Captain America and the Avengers.

Just got through seeing the midnight showing here in the U.S.
I have to say that while I did enjoy it, I was kind of underwhelmed.
I think that while many elements of it were spot-on & excellent, there were many that left me feeling that they missed the opportunity towards greatness. I will be buying this when it is released on Blu-Ray, (of course) but I don't really know if I will partake in any repeat theater viewings.
All in all, I would put it on par with IM2...exceptionally entertaining with several moments of pure fangasm, but flawed enough to be somewhat unessential.
This is just my opinion, I wish that it wasn't. I had such high hopes.

Hemsworth did surprise me on how well he did, though!

This was fantastic. I have a couple qustions:

So Selwyn knew Bruce Banner, according to his dialogue early in the film?

Also, where was Hawkeye's cameo? I missed it.

Al in all, much better than Iron Man 2, on par with Iron Man, and really has me looking foward to Cap this summer.

1) I assume so, yes.
2)...how in god's name could you have possibly missed it? It was the scene where he goes to get Mjolnor...how did you NOT see it...

Thor was quite simply a great and amazing movie. Certainly on par with the likes of Iron Man, Batman, and Spider Man movies. Easily a 9/10 in my eyes. Few movies will ever be as fun as this one. Just great performances from the lead roles.

Yes, he pertains to knowing Bruce Banner. So we're seeing a link-up there already.

Hawkeye was the agent up in the cherry picker when Thor was fighting the big SHIELD guy in the mud ("You're big ......... fought bigger", etc).

My theaters midnight showings were all 3D which was annoying because it made the film too dark in some scenes (especially the awesome opening battle). So here's my review. Forgive my ignorance, though. I don't know much of anything about the character or the Avengers:

I liked this movie a lot. The Avengers references made me groan a little, but they weren't shoved down my throat like the ones in "Iron Man 2"

I'm not sure which I like better of Marvel's movies: "Thor" or "Iron Man" hmmm...I'll have to think about it. Both films definitely had weak villains. For being the God of mischief and an all-out trickster Loki certainly left a lot of loose ends and made it easy for everyone to realize his deceptions. And the whole "You can't kill an entire race!" thing made me shrug. If the film had shown the Ice Giants with an actual culture or some innocent people living their lives in that realm, sure, I would've cared about saving them. But no. The few times we saw the Ice Giant realm it was just a bunch of monster-men sitting around, waiting to be evil. Blast away, Loki. Blast away.

Gotta say, after seeing Thor fight the Ice Giants and the big armor-suit-laser-guy...I don't know who the Avengers could be fighting that would require more than Thor to handle. I mean, why even assemble a team to fight a badguy in the Avengers when you could just ask Thor to bring his other God-friends (I really liked his friends. All the good guys in this movie were very likeable). Also, I found it kind of odd that Thor never wore his helmet into any of the fights, but I guess you can chalk that up to him being so reckless and arrogant.

Those critiques aside, I really enjoyed this movie. Heck of a lot of fun. I'll be recommending it to everyone.

After having finally seen it, I have to say Thor is pretty good. It's not great, and it's not Marvel's best movie, but it's not terrible either. I really like Hemsworth's Thor, which is probably the most important thing. I like Portman as well and, surprisingly, don't hate Kat Dennings' character like I thought I would. Elba, Hopkins, and Hiddleston are all good too. The rest is okay.

My biggest complaint is that the movie doesn't flow together as well as it could, and that could be due in part to the alternating scenes between Asgard and Earth. I also don't care for Thor's merry bunch of companions. I don't mind them in the beginning, but they become increasingly annoying and are a bit too corny for me, especially when on Earth. I felt like I was a kid again and not in a good way. Other than that, it's okay. I've never been a huge fan of Thor, but this movie made me that much more of one. I might catch it again in theaters, and I'm definitely looking forward to seeing more of Thor in The Avengers.

7.5/10

In a town with a population of 5588 the midnight 2D showing was almost packed to capacity. There was also a 3D showing. I asked how sales were for each and got a vague reply that seemed to indicate most were opting for 2D tickets. I saw a guy with 3D tickets walk right by the long 2D line and enter his theater. Don't know if that means anything, but Thor may not get a huge boost from 3D if this is typical. He'll have to earn the money the old-fashioned way I guess.

Really had a good time once it got rolling. But felt like something was cut during the early parts of the movie. Things felt rushed. That may be where the extra 15 minutes was supposed to be. The proper "Thor geek moments" were all there....and they worked onscreen really well. Thor is a true bad-a$$. More action than the Iron Man movies.

The cast was really good. Hemsworth is great as Thor....cannot wait to see him and RDJ trade barbs in The Avengers. Hopkins was magnificent as Odin...."regal" is the proper word. Hiddleston was also great as Loki. The "warriors 3" were underwhelming though...though Alexander was really good as Lady Sif. Portman was better than I thought she would be. Dennings did not irritate me and even made me laugh a couple of times.

I'll give it a 8/10 for the moment. Not quite up to Iron Man level, but better than most super hero movies I've seen. Would probably be in my top 10. Something tells me the directors cut will have a higher score for me. That cut footage hurts it a little. But the crowd really seemed to like it. My first instinct is to say that's because it was a midnight showing that was full of fanboys...

...But at least half the theater got up and left when the credits started rolling.....this was not a theater full of fanboys. A harsh reminder that not everyone knows what we think they should know.

" Thor movie delivers a rather decent (or weak?) opening and the climax between Asgard was also rather weak, but thats because i was hoping for a Asgard vs. Jotunheim big battle with supporting characters and whatnot, but they sticked with the core of the movie being about the Odin family and the drama in this movie was incredibly satisfying and i enjoyed the humour too alot from Kate Dennings character to a certain drinking scene. Hogun lacking a moustache was abit bleh, i mean alot of people *****ed about Idris Elba's Heimdall but he was AWESOME. He had great lines and good ass kickery, tho its very questionable why Loki allowed him to keep the sword. Overall the movie is good and i hope it does well so people can see that "hey superheroes and fantasies are a good mix!" Oh and the setting was very visually beatiful and even tho the Frost Giants weren't as bigs as they are in comics (due to budget) they we're still very indimating. Loki steals the show tho, his scenes we're a thing of joy and Tom delivers a stunning act, definatly the best character for me. Last scene (post credit) was all kinds of awesome. 3.4/5 for me.

Awesome movie! Just got back from the IMAX 3D viewing. I don't know why people were saying not to see this in 3D. It was amazing looking! Hemsworth is Thor! Can't wait for The Avengers!

8/10

Great movie!! Just got home from watching the film in 3D. Alot better then I thought it would be and Hemsworth owned Thor! I cant wait for the Avengers!!

9/10

I saw the film at the midnight premiere last night and my god, it was brilliant!!!! Easilt one of the best superhero films ever made, IMO. I'll write my full review later.

9/10!

^ Of course, but it's still kind of annoying.

Indeed; not that it matters to me in terms of my enjoyment of the film, but I'm hoping that the a majority of the general public and reviewers still end up labeling the film for its true worth.

Hopefully with the film released in NA, that the reviews will go back up since this film easily deserves a 94%, and to compare it to the level that SR and Transformers had fallen too is just sad and pathetic and shows on how many trolls we have out there.

Ok, just got back from seeing it at an actual theater finally(in 2-D). My opinion is pretty much the same as it was when I saw it on my PC. 7.5/10

A good movie but it didn't make me go gaga over it. I will say that the crowd I saw it with was a pretty lackluster bunch which was kinda disappointing. But they didn't have ANY reaction to any of the trailers preceeding the film either(Captain America, Columbiana, Cowboys & Aliens, POTC4, X-Men: First Class). I guess it's just the luck of the draw and sometimes you get a dud audience. They did laugh plenty of times at the fish-out-of-water humor on Earth so they weren't completely without a pulse. But it's really hard to gauge their reaction. I guess that's too be expected when you haven't built up a rabid fanbase who'll cheer at anything(like when I saw X-Men 3 on midnight opening day). Will be seeing it again with my brother and sister-in-law later today so hopefully we draw a better crowd then.

Time to eat a slight bit of crow from my initial thoughts on Thor because a second screening did help.

In the end, it's easily behind the first Iron Man film in the Marvel Studios films. At an hour and 45 minutes without credits, it's simply 10 minutes too short but they make the most of the running time with a cast that really tries to sell this film, especially Hemsworth, Portman, and Hiddleston.

Part of my problem with the film is the Earth section...not so much the content but the fact that it is here where I feel that Marvel cut corners, in terms of cost. Frankly, it looks cheap. I don't believe that Captain America will get the same treatment which leads me to think that Marvel was hoping that Thor would work in some capacity. In a way, they shortchanged Branagh, the cast, and the material because the opening 30 minutes convince the audience that this story and this character could go really, really big.

It hurts the film that the best action sequence happens in the first 30 minutes and the film doesn't really recover. It also doesn't help that some of the visual effects just really don't work and in this day and age of visual effects, that's just inexcusable.

Even with all of that, Thor has the best villain of the Marvel Studios' films. It has the best romantic chemistry than any of the Marvel Studios's films. Hemsworth and Portman's story is one of instant attraction and flirtation. You absolutely buy that they are instantly attracted to each other and are intrigued by each other. The problem is that the film gives us no reason as to why Thor would choose her over all the ladies of Asgard that I know he at least has a chance at, considering he's heir to the throne...especially Lady Sif.

Portman's Foster is very interesting because she's completely intelligent and dedication to her lifelong research. Thor's her evidence, her validation. At the same time (and this is really, really apparent on the second viewing), she really wants to jump Thor's bones immediately. It's really fun to watch Portman play a character this loose, this giddy. It reminded me instantly of her character in Garden State.

Thor's redemption played slightly better the second time but it still needed more time to develop. On my initial viewing, I thought Thor's redemption didn't work because I felt he was being manipulative in his sacrifice. I felt that he knew that if he sacrificed himself, he knew he would be worthy to wield the Hammer and the power of Thor again. On second viewing, that's not the case. He was just trying to save his friends with his sacrifice with no hidden agenda.

Even with that realization, I still needed more time for Thor to understand what his father was trying to teach him. Hemsworth tries his hardest to sell it and he almost pulls it off. I'm pretty sure that the deleted scenes will have the other moments that will help this portion of the film.

All in all, it's way better than Iron Man 2 and the Incredible Hulk. I feel it's more honest and earnest than the Iron Man films even though, from a script and execution perspective, the original Iron Man film is still better than this.

Even with that, I hope that Thor goes really big with the sequel and away from Earth. I also hope that the arc of Thor for the sequels is that he continues to learn and finally ascends to the throne of Asgard. I also wish we get a serious, honest look at the love triangle that seems to be developing in the latter half of the film. We need to see Jane on Lady Sif's turf in the sequels.

I want more of this universe...but I want it executed better. But, I'm down with my first true encounter of Thor.

As an aside, what didn't get better was Patrick Doyle's score. It's still terrible.

Glad to hear that you like it a bit more now J.H.

What would have been better is if the earth scenes had conveyed a longer length of time that Thor was there. From the movie it seems like it only took him a day or two to learn humility which is kinda weak. I agree that we needed more of a reason that Thor would not just be infatuated with Jane(that works fine) but actually fall in love with her and have a significant emotional bond to her. Then when Loki later threatens to go pay her a visit it would have felt more right for Thor to go bezerk on him in the final fight. I have mucho problems with the Raimi Spidey series but when GG threatened to kill MJ in SM1 and Peter went spider-power on his ass...I felt it worked better there. But probably the best case of something like this working was when Vader told Luke he was going to tempt Leia to the dark side since Luke wouldn't go along and then Luke just goes bananas on his ass. I was hoping to get closer to that level in Thor(regarding this particular aspect of the film). It doesn't suck but it needed more.

kedrell,

Totally agree with everything you said...especially the Spider-Man analogy.
