The Official 'Thor Rate & Review' thread - Part 1

I give this film a solid A, or 4.5 out of 5. I work til around 6 today, so I'll write up a formal review when I get home

In my opinion it was a solid superhero movie, like Spiderman 1 & 2, X-Men 1 & 2, and Ironman 1.

I wont go as far as to rank all these movies because it does come down to personal opinion and taste, but i think we can all agree that it was solid and tons of fun.

Flaws? Sure it had some, but there is no such thing as perfect. The best thing about the movies i mentioned (and Begins which i didnt because i think its in a superior tier) is that they re good while also capturing the tone of the comics and making very few compromises in their adaptation. I LOVE the Dark Knight, and it is by far the best movie in the genre, but i just miss that superhero element about it.

tl;dr Marvel Studios have produced some really good superhero movies, very close to the tone of their comics. They might not be masterpieces with deep themes like TDK but that's ok. Kudos to them that they re now gunning for the Avengers which should be AMAZING. Now lets hope that the general audience can get out of that "one hero per movie or its cheesy" mentality.

Watching Thor a second time made me realize how dishonest and terribly misguided Iron Man 2 is as the sequel to the first film.

Frankly, in a lot of respects, Iron Man 2 plays as a comedy more than anything else and that hurts it, considering what we know of Tony Stark from the first film and how he was supposedly changed by the end of it, even with his declaration at the very end of the film.

FLAWS:

Well i only saw it once and since i dont care all that much for Thor, i wont be too pedantic about it. I guess that helps my entertainment since i wont be noticing trivial plot holes or realismz issues.

1) Abrubt transitions between scenes and eras. Jumping from kid Thor to his corronation for example. I would have liked some filler in between.

2) His development to maturity was shown and explained, but somehow it felt like a shortcut. I guess it needed more moping around in flannel shirts but i cant blame them for thinking that its lame and wanting to go fast through it.

3) Asgard and the Ice realm felt... empty, like there were only 10-20 people living there. They didnt feel like entire worlds.

4) Loki should have used more trickery in his fights. Just like raw power is Thor's trademark, his is trickery. He barely fought though so...

5) I wanted more time about Thor and Loki's relationship before Loki's treason. They didnt explore it all that much. From the start we know he's a traitorous *****e, so... does he love his brother at first? Does he hate him from the get go? We dont see much about their early relationship.

Most of these flaws are trivial in my opinion and not enough to spoil a really solid movie. The average movie goer wont be so pedantic or knowledgeble on the mythos so he should be satisfied with Thor and Marvel in general.

I will say that of the 3 jarring transitions that I noted earlier, the first two were actually much better once I actually got to see the film on the big screen. The last one though is every bit as jarring as I thought.

Earle,

1. 2. and 5. are spot on.

If we would've gotten another scene between the two brothers as teenagers, with Odin teaching them another lesson in what it means to be a king, as well as seeing the rival and love between the two before we got to the coronation, that would've helped big time...

In the SCRIPT there's
A scene after the younger Princes where Thor, Loki, Frigga, Sif, and the Warriors III are in another room getting ready for the Coronation that DOES help out. I'm hoping they put that back in with the DVD.

Vartha,

Yeah, I'm finding myself even more anxious to view the Blu Ray to see what was cut out...because that sounds good.

Well I'm not sure that will be added back in, BUT, it does help alot. WITH it, it doesn't seem so much of a jolt.
I too can't wait to see what's not in the film.

Vartha,

Knowing Marvel, there won't be an extended cut. If Incredible Hulk, with it's fabulous deleted scenes, didn't get an extended cut, I don't see this one either...

Thanks! :woot:

Sounds good.

Saw this last night (or early morning) and I must say, definitely one of the top CBMs to have been made.

Depends on how much $ it makes. TIH may not have made enough $ in their eyes to justify an extended cut. Thor might though.

1) I assume so, yes.
2)...how in god's name could you have possibly missed it? It was the scene where he goes to get Mjolnor...how did you NOT see it...
I'm not familiar with
Hawkeye
beyond a couple comics, most notably Marvel Zombies, so I did not make the connection.

I haven't this yet, but I've been reading a ton of reviews. Most of them are very positive. I can't wait to see this tonight.

So was I, Iron Stark. What was added, because the deleted scenes on the Blu Ray were pretty damn good.

Pretty much all the Blu Ray deleted scenes. The biggest difference was that the cave scenes were longer and Yin Sen got more screen time and lines.

My biggest beef was that they took out the part where Tony got his head dunked into the water and heard Pepper calling his name. But it fixed the problem where he had his shirt wet in that scene and he walks outside with it being dry.

Iron Man got an extended cut on the FX channel.
And it wasn't as good as the original, theatrical one. Thor, on the other hand, needs the extended cut or at least 12 deleted scenes, cause I read the script & there are so many things, that weren't shown. So, I'm looking forward to movie's Blu-Ray release.

Should Man of Steel take a cue from this one as far as how to portray god-like powers in a realistic manner?
