It's also set to make more than Batman Begins ($48 million).

Funny because it's also in the exact same predicament as Batman Begins - a prequel/reboot coming after two poorly received sequels after the first two movies in the franchise were very well received.

Batman Begins opened mid-week though. It was at $70M by the end of it's 1st weekend. Not really comparable.

Narnia 3, Scream 4 and now XFC. If the movie doesn't make loadss of money to guarantee sequel then I'd be soooooooo disappointed !

Uh, while Narnia 3 had a weak opening ($24M), it had a 5x multiplier by the time its domestic theatrical run closed. And it had the benefit of a smaller budget than the second film. And it was Fox's first $100M grossing film in a year.

I'm just glad the film is good. The competition in the following weeks in insane, but I think First Class will do very well in the long run and on video.

True, I completely forgot it opened mid-week.

Same here. 2 down, 2 to go.

We'll have to wait and see how it does in the next few days and next weekend. Movies nowadays make the most in it's first few weeks, and it'll be a soft competition next week with only Super 8 coming into the mix.

It would be a shame if FOX starts to have second doubts on a sequel. I commend them for taking a risk. If it were me, I wouldn't give up especially since it would mean we wouldn't get to see Fassy and McAvoy again in these roles. But I do think they need to toy with the idea of bringing in the heavy hitter X-Men for the sequel. Please!!

Time to grey up Fassy's hair, slap a bald cap on McAvoy, jump a decade or two and have a battle royale of X-Men vs. Magneto. They need to fight him in a real fight at least once!!

I agree. If Fox does go for a sequel (which I personally think they will) they'll probably want Singer and Vaughn to at least include the three heavy hitters - Cylcops, Storm, and Jean.

Estimated at 53 Million "First Class" isn't going to beat the "X-Men" opening weekend of 54 Million +. If you adjust "X-Men" for inflation it beats "First Class" by a wider margin. Not to mention "First Class" opened in 3600 + theaters and "X-Men" opened in 3025 theaters.

The hold for "X-Men" is in it's 2nd weekend was 56.92 %, pretty standard for a major tentpole. Not bad, not great. Then it held impressive after that. 45.97%, 46.67%, 38.83%, and 38.30%. It will be interesting to see if "First Class" holds well with the only major competition being "Super 8" next weekend, which is a wild card. After that it will have to fend off "Green Lantern" & "Mr. Poppers Penguins".

Not a bad opening for the flick, below studio estimates, but not necessarily bad. Sequel talk is premature at this point, but by all accounts the movie is damn solid. I haven't seen it yet, but can't wait to see it. Isn't that all that matters, "First Class" being an entertaining movie filled with your favorite characters and doing said characters justice on screen?

It's going to get a sequel or at least we're going to see another X-Men film. I can't see Fox just dumping it altogether.

Well...I wouldn't say "It's going to get a sequel" just yet. It could for sure, but nothing is set in stone either way I would imagine. I agree with your second sentence a little more, that there will be another X-Men related film.

But there may be a drop in quality since they made more money with X3 and Wolverine.

Which benefited from riding the coattails of X1 and X2. FC is the first time in a long while that audiences left the theater feeling good about the series. In situations such as this, initial reception of a current movie corresponds more to the previous installments. FC will have to take the blunt end of having to rekindle an indifferent crowd. But now that it's over with, the sequel will fare a whole lot better because of it.

It will get a sequel. It will make a profit and the dvd sales will be good. Plus it will be cheaper to make a sequel to this than X4 so we will get a First Class sequel.

^At worst we'll get a Wolvie sequel.

I thought we were getting a wolvie sequel regardless?

I hope the studio understands this and doesn't just assume it's because the movie didn't cater to the mindless action crowd.

They do however need some lessons in marketing. That was a big factor this time.

Opening numbers are disappointing to say the least. This is what happens when a film has to follow the disaster that was Wolverine, I imagine that put a lot of people off from the X-Men. In fact I wasn't even hugely excited for this movie till reviews started to come back. And the general audience that doesn't look at overall reviews will just be left with fatigue due to X3 and X-Origins Wolverine.

But it's so great, this movie won't be passed up. HOpefully it has legs and also does killer numbers on dvd/bluray. We want a sequel!

Pretty much.

And yeah, if this film doesn't do as well, I hope this doesn't deter Fox's plans. If they realized the last two sucked and that this is an actual quality film then they'll give it another shot.

Either way, yes, we are going to see another X-Men movie. If Fox can fastrack this film with less than a year before relase we're going to get another one.

I hope FOX now realizes the damage that putting out crap movies does to a franchise. They rushed to make X3 and in effect basically knee-capped one of their biggest franchises. So eager to make a quick buck!

Seeing XM:FC, imagine what Vaughn could have done with X3 if they would have given him time and freedom (and his own screenwriters). ARGHHHHH!

The one thing we have to hope for is word of mouth.

X-Men movies are notorious for their big drop offs after the first and second week of release. Hopefully it hits big numbers before Green Lantern week.

Opening weekend was kind of disappointing.
Hopefully, it has strong legs.
Any talk of a sequel being a "sure thing" is a little premature.
The movie is said to have cost $120m.
IMO X-men needs to hit $150m domestically for a sequel to be considered.
