We probably won't get the overseas totals for quite a while.![]()
Twentieth Century Foxs prequel X-Men: First Class opened to $56 million at the domestic box office to win the weekend race, and enough for the studio to proclaim that a new era has begun for its marquee superhero franchise.
Overseas, First Class grossed $64 million from 74 territories for a worldwide bow of $120 million. First Class lost the international race to Disneys Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides ($87.4 million), but didnt have as big a footprint.
First Class and a cadre of strong holdovers helped fuel a bumper weekend at the domestic box office, with revenues up a welcome 30% over the same frame a year ago.
Domestically, Fox said Matthew Vaughns First Classcosting close to $140 million to produce--achieved its goal in matching the $54.5 million opening of the first X-Men.
More bullish box office observers had expected First Class to hit $60 million in its debut, but Fox always kept its projections in the $45 million to $55 million range.
The movie really excelled in successfully launching a brand new chapter in the X-Men franchise, or new beginning if you will, Fox senior vice president of domestic distribution Chris Aronson said.
I don't know about that ratio, but I could see it hitting $285m worldwide. So what are the chances of FC making 150 domestic and 150 Overseas?
$56 isn't bad at all. I thought it would do about $65-$70 but that isn't too far off. We will see how it stacks up against Super 8 next weekend. I don't think Super 8 is going to do that well anyways so I think First Class has a good shot at making some more cash next weekend.
TIH opened at 55, but had massive drops every following weekend. Hope First Class doesn't experience the same thing.
reguardless if this movie does well or not...Fox will make another X-men movie no matter what. Whether it's x4 or X-men:second class....that's the real question.
There is a very good chance of that happening considering the competition.
Super 8, Green lantern, Cars 2, Transformers 3, Harry Potter, Captain America, Cowboys & Aliens.....
That's a mediocre opening because grosses in overseas markets has increased a lot in the past couple of years.
Thor opened with 89m from 54 markets on 1st weekend
Iron Man opened with 99m from 56 markets on 1st weekend
Iron Man 2 opened with 92m from 51 markets on 1st weekend
Wolverine opened with 73m from 101 markets on 1st weekend (This movie leaked online a month in advance so that impacted the overseas boxoffice)

So what are the chances of FC making 150 domestic and 150 Overseas?
