We probably won't get the overseas totals for quite a while. :(

We should get international numbers within a few hours

Twentieth Century Fox’s prequel X-Men: First Class opened to $56 million at the domestic box office to win the weekend race, and enough for the studio to proclaim that a new era has begun for its marquee superhero franchise.

Overseas, First Class grossed $64 million from 74 territories for a worldwide bow of $120 million. First Class lost the international race to Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides ($87.4 million), but didn’t have as big a footprint.

First Class and a cadre of strong holdovers helped fuel a bumper weekend at the domestic box office, with revenues up a welcome 30% over the same frame a year ago.

Domestically, Fox said Matthew Vaughn’s First Class—costing close to $140 million to produce--achieved its goal in matching the $54.5 million opening of the first X-Men.

More bullish box office observers had expected First Class to hit $60 million in its debut, but Fox always kept its projections in the $45 million to $55 million range.

“The movie really excelled in successfully launching a brand new chapter in the X-Men franchise, or new beginning if you will,” Fox senior vice president of domestic distribution Chris Aronson said.

Well, if FOX is happy thats all that matters. Bring on the sequel.

$56 isn't bad at all. I thought it would do about $65-$70 but that isn't too far off. We will see how it stacks up against Super 8 next weekend. I don't think Super 8 is going to do that well anyways so I think First Class has a good shot at making some more cash next weekend.

reguardless if this movie does well or not...Fox will make another X-men movie no matter what. Whether it's x4 or X-men:second class....that's the real question.

Yeah I agree. I don't see Super 8 pulling in big numbers. I'm guessing about 40 or so million that weekend for that movie. But I don't think X-men might be number 1 that weekend. It will probably do about 25 or even 30 million next week.

That's a mediocre opening because grosses in overseas markets has increased a lot in the past couple of years.

Thor opened with 89m from 54 markets on 1st weekend
Iron Man opened with 99m from 56 markets on 1st weekend
Iron Man 2 opened with 92m from 51 markets on 1st weekend
Wolverine opened with 73m from 101 markets on 1st weekend (This movie leaked online a month in advance so that impacted the overseas boxoffice)

TIH opened at 55, but had massive drops every following weekend. Hope First Class doesn't experience the same thing.

There is a very good chance of that happening considering the competition.

Super 8, Green lantern, Cars 2, Transformers 3, Harry Potter, Captain America, Cowboys & Aliens.....

Yeah. The film is a hit . No , its not making Avatar, TDK,POTC, or X3 type numbers , but I doubt execs at Fox expected it to anyway. Like Thor, it had alot of people expecting it to be bad and as a result its something of an underdog. However, With the great word of mouth , the film will most likely have legs and earn steady buisness.

First Class would have probably made Thor numbers if it was 3D as well. 3D makes movies seem more popular than they actually are.

All the X-Men movies haven't had particularly great legs. Its biggest competition will come from Green Lantern in two weeks. The domestic box office for the other films stack up as

X-Men
Opening $ 54.5 M
Gross $ 157.3 M

X2
Opening $ 85.6 M
Gross $ 214.9 M

X3
Opening $ 102.7 M
Gross $ 234.4 M

Wolverine
Opening $ 85 M
Gross $ 179.9 M

HP, Cap, C&A are all way too far out to really affect X-Men. X-Men's main competition will come in the form of GL. Super 8 will not be a huge hit, probably a 30 mil max opening for that one. If the good WOM continues, I can see this X-Men film being the leggiest of the series, both here and abroad. At the very least, this should do well enough for a sequel.

Super 8 doesn't need to be a smash hit anyway. I believe the budget is around $30 million as someone mentioned in another thread.

If it only dropped 1% on Staurday and WOM is kicking in is that a good sign? Or can we even know what WOM is at right now? I uess we'll know during this week here.

No one ever expected it to make more than XMO:Wolverine or the Iron Man movies. And "fantasy" movies like Thor always do better internationally. Plus, we (or at least I) don't know which markets either movie opened in first. Some markets are more lucrative than others. One of the biggest growing markets nowadays is Russia and it might be a problem marketing XM:FC in Russia... you know, with the whole Cuban Missile Crisis!

The good news to take from this is that it looks like for once, an X-Men movie might do better overseas than domestically. :)

I love how every anticipated movie this year has started off with a ''THIS IS A FLOP." comment and yet not a single one has been a ''flop" yet. Some have underperformed, but none have outright flopped yet.

so is the budget 120 or 160 because box office mojo has it listed 160 but wiki has it listed as 120?

I've heard $140m too...I'll assume that the production was around $130-$140m and with marketing, it probably ended up over $160m altogether?

Im happy that its doing a bit better than X-men 1, (appart from the inflation).

Fox should be happy with this decent result, definetly.

Cant wait for the sequel already, with the addition of two or three well known actors.
