The Rank and Rate Man of Steel thread

After a second watching I give it a solid nine. Something about watching Superman on the big screen is something special.

I know my rankings are probably completely different from everyone else, but here goes:
1. The Dark Knight - Transcended genre and completely changed the limits of what a CBM can and cannot be.
2. Batman Begins - Super solid origin story. Not a huge fan of the 3rd act, but the first 2/3rds of the movie are amazing to me.
3. Man of Steel - Its not without its flaws, but the scope, scale, ambition and visual flare is incredible. Extremely excited for the sequel.
4. The Dark Knight Rises
5. Thor

:up: well I like the Marvel films but agree with what you said.

You know more I think of it I think this film had the best ending of any CBM ever, it ended on such an uplifting note with the scenes where Superman smashed up the drone and Clark walked into the DP.
yup. you walked out from cinema felt so excited!

One of my favorite endings ever. Snyder and Co. totally nailed it. :supes:

SO MUCH POTENTIAL WITH THAT LAST MINUTE. It also may be my favorite ending to a CBM ever.

Having seen it again...it's still an 8/10. It's a flawed movie with serious issues, but I still had a blast with it. It's more fun the second time around, but fun can only make a movie so good. I thought Spider-Man 3 was fun, but it's a poorly paced movie with a ton of problems.

Still, I think my favorite Superman movie remains Superman II. I'm probably gonna piss half of you guys off for saying that...but I don't care.

Definitely :up: I think that last minute just made me so hopeful for the future, it set it up nicely for the sequel.

I think those that were disapointed with MOS whether it be the neck snap, the origin, or whatever will get the Superman film they wanted for this one in the sequel. The one where Clark works for the Daily Planet and his surrounding cast are around. I really cannot wait!

Fingers crossed and looking forward to it.:yay:

No really. I think they will keep on trying new things n think outside the box which will still test on their limit of acceptance.

There's no reason they can't do all those things and still do what you're saying.

I mean if lex luthor is in the sequel... they might complain this is not lex luthor as he will never behave such n such.... same goes to the mild reporter clark kent. The portrayal might piss them off.

Oh right I see what u mean. I don't mind if they go more left field and do something different in those respects. I know some people would be pissed off but that's a given.

I can see critics having a field day with Lex. "And why is Lex a billionaire business man. Where is the fun real estate scheme? This isn't the Lex I grew up with. This movie takes itself way too seriously..."

40% RT rating :dry:

+ the different portrayal of reporter clark kent... it can happen.

Critics will always be critics. That's what they get paid to do, criticize.

I tell you right away they're going to love Lex Luthor in the sequel. Nobody complained against Ledger's Joker because it wasn't like Nicholson's. I think critics complained against MOS because it really didn't show the impact of Superman in the people.

I agree with this. I am already a little disheartened that good old Clark is already evaporated.

Well, we do the same. For free. :csad:

Just saw this for the second time, I'm glad I gave it a week between repeat viewings. It really gave me time to think about this film and in my first viewing I thought the film had definite pacing problems. Now that I've seen it again I don't think that at all, whilst I thought from my initial viewing that the stuff in between the Destruction of Krypton and Zod & Co's arrival was poorly paced even and editing strangely, I did not think not think the same on this repeat viewing. Now whilst that part of the film was where my problems with the film were I now feel like I can rate this film a 10. No it's not perfect but it's definitely my ultimate movie. It's the Superman movie I wanted and it's what I got.

I think on the second viewing the main factor in my enjoyment was the fact that the audience were better participants than the previous time, they laughed at all the right moments and they gasped when Superman broke Zod's neck. Infact after that moment there were whispers; did he really do that? Hell yeah, and even some laughing (teenagers) etc. one if the most notable reactions with the audience was the scene where Zod's message played, a little girl sat a few rows across seemed a little scared of that scene but she cheered when Superman punched the hell out of Zod for threatening his mother.

It's amazing to me how much more I enjoyed it seen as though I am full of cold and I was even burning up before I sat down to watch(thank god for iced smoothies) but if anything my enjoyment let me forget how ill I felt for those 2 and a half hours.

I really cannot wait for the next chapter and I think I will now wait for the Blu Ray for my next viewing as I don't want to kill it off before I buy that (I did that with both Batman Begins and the Dark Knight).

So my rating goes from a 9.5 to a 10. Superman is back and he's top of the mountain.

I now rank my top ten CBMs thusly (as you can probably tell I'm a huge fan of origin stories):

1. Man of Steel
2. Avengers Assemble
3. Superman the Movie
4. Batman Begins
5. The Dark Knight
6. The Amazing Spider-Man
7. Captain America: The First Avenger
8. X-Men First Class
9. Batman (1989)
10. The Dark Knight Rises

I finally got see this on a rainy Saturday afternoon, and I enjoyed it so much.

One must concede that it isn't a perfectly made film. The non-linear arrangement of the chronology is in places effective but in others it interrupts the flow of the narrative. The crash-bang-booms become a little overstated, and one senses that the Kryptonians are secretly planning to demolish every multi-story building in Metropolis with Superman's head. It makes little sense that Superman and Zod have an epic fistfight all over Earth and its orbit, but return to the same square kilometer of Metropolis for the important dramatic bits, so that Lois and co and look up at the sky meaningfully, again and again.

BUT the movie does almost everything perfectly with the Superman mythos, in my opinon. Cavill, Crowe and Costner are all wonderful. It felt meaningful when a baby Kryptonian was blasted into the depths of space, and when the that baby became a man and flew for the first time. Bosworth's Lois was that rarest of things, a love interest that was more than a love interest, an a valuable representative of the audience within the film.

I found it, in terms of its delivery of the best of what is loveable about a comicbook property, to be the most satisfactory film since Batman Begins.

8/10.

Can't wait for the next.

but a few less Rugby tackles into skyscrapers and crowds looking in awe at the sky, please!

7/10 I liked it a lot for the most part, but it had too much sloppiness. Lots of forced drama and hollow character development.

I absolutely loved Adams as Lane, thought it was perfect. I knew it'd be perfect when I heard she was gonna be Lane. Cavil was a terrific Superman. Oh darn it, the entire cast was extraordinary. Haven't seen better casting since TDK trilogy.

I watched it again after a week and I admit it was better on 2nd viewing...I go from ranking it 6.5 to now 7.5. I suppose the high anticipation eclipsed my ability to enjoy it first time around. I feel little bit better now about this Clark Kent on 2nd viewing, he's not moping as much as I felt he did back then.
Good action, sci-fi, alien first contact thriller.

Pa Kent's decision to save a dog during his demise...and the last 10 minute Superman-General Zod bash-a-thon scene were obviously thousands of people are dying and Superman is not doing much to stop it...prevents me from giving the movie higher score. However, I can look towards the sequel a little bit better than I did before.

Didn't have any expectations at all. I was just impressed by trailers and was curious about the movie.

5/10. Super-flat characters, terrible pacing and editing. Weak story. Lecturing during fights. Fights come down to smashing bodies into walls/floors/roofs. But gorgeous designs and FX.

1. Batman Returns, The Dark Knight;
2. The Avengers;
3. Batman Forever;
4. Batman Begins, The Dark Knight Rises;
5. Iron Man, Iron Man 3, X2, First Class.

I don't want to watch Man Of Steel ever again.

Well, Batman Forever is No.3 on your list. :woot:
