The Rank and Rate Man of Steel thread

Are you being sarcastic? If not, who else?
Ms. Marvel did like 3 posts above yours.

It just seems like such a strange, arbitutary number to give.

Hi guys, latecomer from South Africa here. I haven't been on the boards since the third trailer coz I didn't want the movie spoiled the way I ruined Superman Returns for me.

I don't want to speak much about the movie coz I'll probably never stop, but when it was over it was the only movie I didn't immediately get up from. I was simply stunned with what I just seen. The first sentence I could verbalize was: "That wasn't a movie, it was an EXPERIENCE!" Even if the sequels don't live up, we will always have this movie to show people who Superman really is. (Notice I didn't say "We'll have this movie to show people what a Superman MOVIE can be." Who cares whether Man of Steel was a movie, a book, or a song? This movie sincerely and IMO successfully modernizes one of the greatest fictional characters of all time for a whole new generation!

So so glad that Superman now has a movie to show Marvelites who the greatest is (yes, yes, I know it's not a contest, but I love DC. What can I say? :)

It's not perfect, but I truly believe I saw something special today, so I gave it a 10 in this poll, only because even a 9 felt like I was lying to myself. Avengers was a good movie. Dark Knight Rises was art. But Man of Steel is one of the closest things I've ever seen to a film taking you on a transcendental trip. The only other films I can think of that do this are Tree of Life and 2001. Yes, I think THAT MUCH of it. Of course, it's not ultimately a movie about existential questions, but I can't see a major blockbuster getting any closer to that.

Maybe it won't be good on the re-watches or in a few years, but I'm definitely still reelin' over it. It was even harder to wait an extra 2 weeks before it came out in South Africa.

As for the "changes" to the character, I have no problem with Superman killing Zod, or of meeting Lois Lane before he comes to the Daily Planet. Every origin story is different, so why shouldn't Nolan/Goyer have their own?

And yes, I have a few gripes. Why not? I felt the movie could've done with another 15-30 minutes, but again, it's not art house. Those theaters need to clear audiences fast to make way for the next batch. I also feel like....actually, I don't want to get into details here because, like I said, I probably won't stop.

I lurvvvved the "spacey" alien soundtrack of Zimmer's for the Krypton parts (I'm sure you know which one I'm talking about). Even "classic" isn't enough to describe it. It's freakin' beyond description! I'm more a visual person than an audiophile, and MOS was sooo sooo pleasing to the eyes. It wasn't just eye-candy. It wasn't just story-driven eye-candy. It was dessert for the soul! The same way Superman shows people how good they can be, this movie showed me how good a movie could be when made with love and respect.

I'll stop short here. Maybe one day I'll write my review and have my say. But I truly am pleased. It's so good to see DC superheroes given the attention and care they deserve. If we ever get a JL movie with this level of craftsmanship, I don't think I'm gonna walk out of that theater. :)

Will be on the boards now until a few months before MOS 2. Time to catch up and start thinking who the next villian is gonna be. I say: Lex and Brainiac. If we're lucky, Metallo too.

See you soon. :)

CConn for some reason i thought you would give MOS a bigger rating than SR. hmmmm :)

i gave MOS 7/10. i think liking the big scale actiong added to the rating.

Like it less and less after each viewing. I'll give it a 6/10 just because it's enjoyable and has enough positives that outweigh the negatives. Better than TDKR for sure, but not cerebral enough of a movie for my tastes. I'll be onboard for a sequel, but if it doesn't improve on this, I'm jumping ship.

Recent DC: BB-8.5/10, TDK-9/10, TDKR 4.5/10, GL- 3/10, SR- 5.5/10, MOS- 6/10.

Think I need to go watch it again before deciding on this score properly.

Thanks for the heartening review, Ohmshalone! Enjoyed reading that.

Glad that you enjoy it that much. yes, superman is back finally!!!
i was caught off guard how fast the movie runs in my first viewing. but i know i have seen something spectacular.
2nd viewing is just work perfectly for me. hope it will do the same to you.

it's weird that some of us didn't see what we see; the spectacle and the epicness of the movie.

btw, MOS hasn't open yet in South Africa? when will it open?

It opened on Friday. That's why I had to wait so long. :)

Japan is the worst. They'll have to wait until August IIRC.

Exactly. Even though I did score MOS after my 1st showing (7), I did admit I had to see it again for a final rating. After 2nd viewing I'm holding it at a solid 9-1/2, I enjoyed it that much.

This is just one of those movie's that is a MUST see 2nd showing! The second viewing helped me understand much more of what I missed the first time around, I walked out of the theater with a much greater appreciation for what Zack has done here. Now all that's left for me is an IMAX viewing! :)

2nd showing is definitely a must, after the second showing my rating went up to a 10

Man of Steel is a very amitious film. There is alot to take in. When I saw it the 2nd time, I could believe how much awesomeness of the film I had forgotten after my 1st viewing.

I think people give high ratings way too easy. Sometimes i wonder if those who gave this a "9" and a "10" have seen many movies over the years beside blockbusters.

I give this a 7, and i´m actually being nice by doing it, because i like the character. Good performances. Good action scenes. Unimpressive plot. Decent film. Not a 10, for sure.

That's fair. I only really watch blockbusters. And I judge them as such. I really dont compare other blockbusters to any other films as various genres have certain goals for their films.

I think Superman Returns is a poor blockbuster film. But if that movie was debuted on Lifetime in 2006, I would think it was pretty good.

after my 2nd viewing i'm sticking to a 8/10 .. gonna see it for 3rd time on big muliplex screen in 3D again .. my 2D showing was on a small s.hitty screen with crap sound .. good sound to me is half of the experience & most of the big screens here in ZA is dedicated to 3D .. ah well

Saw it, finally, loved it, thought it was a great modern re-telling of the origin, loved the cast, action scene's were awesome. But what I love most is that it had gravitas, emotion and that epic feel that any Superman film should have. I love Marvel and DC, but the character of Superman needs certain things to work, and MOS had them IMO.

I had a few problems, mainly the resolution of his relationship with Pa Kent and some other things but they didnt bother me too much and didnt effect my enjoyment at all. 9/10, I will be seeing this again.

After finally watching it, I couldn't agree more, AVEITWITHJAMON.

I'll post my review later this month!

I finally got to see it. Unfortunately I was disappointed overall.

Some things were better than I had expected though. The acting works well throughout the movie. I want scruffy-looking, bearded Superman though. He was the coolest version. :) My fears from the overacting Zod in the trailer were stilled since he worked well in the overall context. I don't really agree with the criticism against Lois either. She's solid in her role in my view. Costner and Crowe were probably my favorite performances.

I actually didn't mind Superman killing Zod as I thought I would. It's a strange that he was strong enough to Zod's his neck (that kind of neck breaks, as well as choking, are pet-peeves in movies for me though) but not move his head to point the beams away from the people, but the sentiment and reaction worked well.

The bad parts were that I thought the writing and editing was pretty bad. It feels pretty choppy and told in bullet point style, and there were quite a lot of smaller errors (things that were illogical, contradicted other things in the movie etc) that I won't go into. While quite a lot of people are tired of origin stories I'd still would have liked to see more of Superman growing up and, more importantly, instill better that the Kents are what made him into who he is (including the hero he is). I felt like Jonathan was mainly holding him back rather than inspire him to be great.

Jonathan's death scene didn't work for me. Clark had already exposed his powers to save lives despite his dad having forbidden it, and nothing really came out of it, but he wouldn't do it when his dad was about to die? That he didn't let Clark go back for the dog also felt a bit like a plot convenience since it was a time of stress and he surely knew that Clark would do it faster, even if he's just moving like a young adult. The fast pacing never let it show that Clark was tormented by having let his father die either.

The action was abundant but I unfortunately felt like less would have been much more. It quickly became too much so they couldn't escalate from there and it just got stuck in gear and never climaxed. It became like Transformers where huge things happen everywhere but it just doesn't make me care as I should. The Smallville battle worked best out of the final ones and showed that scale doesn't mean emotion. Superman wrestling those snakelike things felt completely pointless, the world engine broke too much and it made Superman vs Zod feel anticlimactic. And it all went on too long. The most memorable part of all that conflict was a scene where 3-4 people were in danger (Zod's death).

I would also have liked them to have shown the aftermath of all that as well. The Earth has been attacked by super-powered aliens and they destroyed so much of Metropolis that a decade probably wouldn't be enough time to rebuild. The filmmakers even talked about that they wanted to show what would happen if that were to occur but I didn't think they did.

It's still enough in there to be a good movie though, just not as good as I hoped. Perhaps it will be better on a second viewing as being disappointed in part has to do with expectations and I've seen that several have found it to be better after a second viewing. I likely won't see it again in the theaters but I'll check it out again when I've gotten some distance too it. Hopefully I'll change my mind a bit.

For the sequel, which I want to see, I hope they get a different writing team though. A team that writes something that won't let Snyder go overboard with the action. If that happens I think it can be very good. The ingredients are there.

If someone has an opinion about my opinion and want to discuss it I'm happy to do so, but please try to keep it on a level where we can respect differing opinions. I'm not writing what I found negative to annoy anyone, nor do I care the least about any DC vs Marvel, or Superman vs Batman or whatever fan wars are around.

yes and no. :D

1. we are not the film expert. we don't need to watch many movies in order to compare their notes, their strengths and weakness to give our rating. we don't judge a film base on all those technicalities.
2. it is a superman movie. we are superman fans. and you are in a superman forum. :D
3. we saw the grand picture of the movie. we saw the epicness it's trying to attain. most of all, we saw the most awesome superman movie ever made.

i regretted that i gave it a 9/10 only. :D :p

My heart says 10/10, I felt like they did a good job of making Kal emotionally relatable and connecting him with the audience, the main reason I think DC excels. But my head would probably say 8/10. After some consideration I can understand why some people find problems with the plot and some dialogue, the rest of the commonly mentioned 'faults' are honestly nitpicks.

I didn't really pay attention to it in TDKT but looking at the recurring trend I agree that someone needs to tone down Goyer's dialogue, what would work brilliantly in a speech bubble translates poorly to a movie with a serious tone.

Overall though I enjoyed it immensely, I can't quite understand why some people object to the amount of action? Superman is honestly one of the coolest heroes powers-wise, it's about time his abilities get showcased and I think Snyder did an amazing job with the fight sequences particularly. If the dialogue can be tidied up and plot made a bit more neat in MOS2 the signs are good that an awesome trilogy could be on the cards!

Just because there are more important and profound movies out there, doesn't mean we can't still love the hell out of a summer blockbuster now and then.

We're not scoring MOS against every movie ever made here (hell, by that measure even genre greats like TDK and Blade Runner would fall awfully short); the high score for MOS is simply a measure of how much we enjoyed this movie itself. And for me, it was an easy 9. Despite a few pacing issues, I left the theater more pumped and excited about a superhero than I have in quite a while.

i don't understand. u have enjoyed it immensely as you put it. why did you want to give a lower score just because they are complaints and you gotta acknowledge them, taking care their feeling and compromise???
i would say... go with your heart. :D the brain is thinking too much...

To some people it is a 10. To you it is not.

any update from newbies?
can they still vote?

I have to give this movie a 10! To me this movie is up there with The Dark Knight and The Avengers. A comic book come to life.
