The Rank and Rate Man of Steel thread

Ok, this isn't meant as a definitive score, but:

2,551/312=8.1762

So right now the board's current score of the movie indicates our average view as being very good, but not great. Of course, that depends on believing that 9-10 counts as great, 7-8 as good, 5-6 as okay, 3-4 as disappointing, and 1-2 as bad.

And that score is just us die-hard fanboys who voted on this board, so it's not representative of the Hype as a whole, but it does imply a certain satisfaction from most of us.
i think SR scored pretty high too among us in the beginning.
sorry to rain on your parade... :p :D

No, it's okay! I'm a social studies teacher, so I'm just kind of curious to see the implications of our debates and different perceptions of the scoring system. For instance, how many people who voted 10 or 1 did so because they genuinely considered it the best or worst film they'd ever seen? How does that impact the average? The sheer subjective nature of the scoring poll itself implies a huge amount of give and take. I just think it's fascinating.

I feel as though a lot of people on these boards would have been fine with SR if the GA enjoyed it and there was a sequel. :yay:

me for one. :p

because after the 20+ years of development hell superman had gone through, i had lost hope in WB in developing a great superman story/movie.

i'm now so damn happy for what we are getting.

My rate for Man of Steel is 6/10. Awful pacing with so many underdeveloped characters.

I hate this reasoning. No offense to you personally.

But who cares about the other characters at this point. Everyone in MOS seemed pretty established except Superman.

What is there to develop about Perry White, the military characters, Lois Lane is a reporter and a good one.

In Batman Begins it was the same thing. The origin is all about taking care of the hero.

In the Dark Knight, we really got to see the development of Gordon, Harvey, Rachel. Hell characters were developed so well in TDK people felt that Batman was barely in the movie.

Back to MOS, a lot of the characters had a lot of screen time. Superman did not win the day alone. Many characters played a part at the end. Lois got involved, Jor-El, Hardy, the other guy in charge, the scientist. A lot of people got plenty of shine.

Yeah to be fair, I probably would have scored SR as an 8 or 9 after the first viewing as well, inflated a bit by the rush and excitement of seeing Superman on the big screen again (it's only later, after taking a step back, that I'd rate it more as a 6 or 7).

Still though, while my 9 rating for MOS might decrease a bit after multiple viewings, I can't see it really falling that far. And in fact from what people are saying, it might actually even improve a bit on a second viewing (with some of the pacing issues smoothing out, for instance)-- which you couldn't really say about SR unfortunately.

very true.
i can be very certain that i will never get bored of multiple viewings of MOS. i can watch it from the beginning till the end of the whole movie. unlike STM, SII, SIII SIV and SR, which i will always fast forwarding most of the scenes while watching.

mmm... maybe i will only fast forwarding the earth machine scene. :D

For me, after the 1st time I seen MOS, I walked out rating it a 7, but i really, really wanted to see it again as it's simply one of them films you have to in order to get the whole gist of everything that is in this movie. I walked out the theater the second time with a rating of a 9-1/2. I got to understand more scenes since I wasn't being so cynical the 1st time around, the 2nd time i actually let my brain rest a bit ,payed better attention instead of thinking so dang much, and walked out with the biggest smile on my face!

Now as far as SR, I seen it at the theater back in June of 06 and never cared to go back. I felt so depressed after that movie that I waited until 2011 to purchase it on BluRay. And after trying to sit through it, I understood why it took me so long to purchase it. SR has to be one of the most boring movies I've ever sat through, it's as simple as that. The reason for me actually giving the BluRay a pass was because of the special features and making of the movie. As for now SR simply sits as a collectors piece in my theater library.

BTW, I can't wait, going to IMAX for the 1st time ever in my life in 2 weeks to go see MOS for a 3rd time with some friends, can't wait to see what IMAX has to offer to the MOS experience! :)

This discussion ties into the idea that once you know the spoilers of a movie, you can focus on everything else-like all the little character quirks actors add to their performances and the more brilliant storytelling decisions and beats. Because your mind is trying to enjoy the movie again, your mind thinks more and you know where to focus on the screen and can let your eyes wander if you get a little bored.

I had the same experience with Batman Begins. I was used to the Burton story. I thought reboot meant that they were going back to the beginning of the Burton version. In both Burton and Nolans Batman the killer of Bruce parents were blonde. So when Joe Chill died outside the courthouse it threw the whole film off for me. I couldnt enjoy it. I left say the movie wasnt that good.

When I finally understood exactly what Nolan was doing, it was like a veil was lifted from my face. I saw the movie on DVD alone in my apartment. I called my girlfriend and told her "Yooooooo, that was a good ass movie. It was really good!!!" There was so much stuff I missed because was so focused on something else.

That's "World Engine" (terrible name.) :woot:

After second viewing today, I am convinced that the movie has heart and emotion, so my earlier rating of 8 / 10 stands.

I was impressed by 3D conversion.

7.5 for me but I voted 8. Rank it at 8 in my top ten as well.

I AGREE,the others were supporting roles anyway.
Some Folks just don't get it.

I thought it was pretty mediocre. The action was great, but the whole movie looked dingy and ugly like the director didn't know how to frame shots properly. The score was terrible and although most of the actors were good, I thought Cavill was wooden. He certainly won't make anybody forget about Christopher Reeve. Both the problems and praises I have with this film are pretty much the exact opposite of Superman Returns. They end up at about the same spot in terms of how much I enjoyed them however. Both were tremendous disappointments that failed to reach their potential but are okay as films. At least it was a lot better than last year's superhero reboot, the Amazing Spider-Man.

Rankings:

Superman: The Movie - 10/10
Superman II - 8/10
Superman Returns - 6/10
Man of Steel - 6/10
Superman III - 3/10
Superman IV: The Quest for Peace - 1/10

I am curious: could you cite some scenes where Cavill came off as wooden? About half the critics who gave negative reviews to the film cited something similar. But the rest seem to believe that didn't happen at all. I tend to agree with the latter, but I feel you probably have some specific scenes you can talk about Cavill's acting. I kind of want to discuss where this judgement is coming from.

I loved Cavill as Superman. If there was any issue with any casting for me it was Adams. Not that she sucked, I just didn't buy her as Lane is all.

I think wooden as in he's basically only have 2 emotions in the movie... serious/angry... basically, not a gambit of emotions..

Now, personally i don't think this is Cavill's fault, because once or twice he did smile (but very briefly).. I think it's the script... Similarly, Zod is always angry...

After I saw it again the movie really slowed down for me. I liked it better the second time even better than the first & I have it a solid 9

U didn't see how happy he is when he found out he can fly? He shows a wide range of emotion in the movie.

We saw more of him angry in this movie than we usually see in other media, but I thought we saw plenty of joy anytime he was around his mom or Lois, and he smirked quite a bit, which kind of fits with the Golden Age Superman. I had no problem feeling an emotional empathy with the character thanks to his portrayal, though I do appreciate that Cavill and Reeves had different ways of portraying some of Supes' stoicism.

Reeves was more about showing Superman being guarded around potential enemies, and seems to have been more of a genuine nerd in personality, someone you could easily see as having plenty of friends but always being kind of more insular as Clark and more type-A personality as Superman. Cavill, on the other hand, is portraying a lonely and frustrated Superman who was even more of a social outcast then others.

Reeves' Clark was fully developed in every way from his rescue of Lois on. Cavill's Clark is still kind of looking for and hoping for some more human bonds, and has a kind of youthful anxiousness mixed with an adolescent frustration. I loved the way Cavill acted as teenaged Clark, obviously trying to express himself and try something different. And I love the way Clark is acting in the Planet after putting on the glasses. He finally belongs somewhere, and he couldn't be more overjoyed.

Yes I did... and like i said, it's not Henry's fault.. he can act.. just the script didn't call for much emotions.. just the dour mostly... Also i said you see him smile a couple times..

In anycase... that flying scene went by so fast like a speeding bullet, you can't see anything... it could have been done so much better... and you can't tell if he's laughing or constipated...
