It still keeps me wonder why nobody ever suggested him. 2005, the same year as Batman Begins there were 3 male performances in particular that got alotta praise; Philip Seymour Hoffman in Capote, Joaquin Phoenix in Walk the Line, & Heath Ledger in Brokeback Mountain. All nominated for an Oscar, Golden Globe, SAG, & Bafta. The Dark Knight had 3 new rumored characters; The Penguin, Harvey Dent, & The Joker. Hoffman was the most popular choice for The Penguin, Phoenix was one of the most popular choices for Dent. Heath was the leading actor in the biggest movie of that year. Why did nobody ever suggest him for the Joker?not much point in speculating.
nolan is probably going to throw us a curve ball like he did with ledger and it will likely fit perfectly.

Sorry for going a lil OT.
Edward Norton would be a terrible idea for the Joker. Whilst I think he's a good actor, he's already the lead in another superhero franchise... I for one don't like the idea of double-dipping in iconography.
On a purely aesthetical stand-point, a black actor would be interesting.
However, my choice which I think you should consider is:
Casey Affleck

The guy can seriously act. He's got a dark, mysterious look, and is currently just the right side of stardom level to be mouldable into a movie icon. I really think he'd be great.
Hmmm...Casey Affleck for Joker sounds REALLY interesting.
But to whoever, we were just shooting the breeze about a Black Riddler. I'm pretty sure we're just doing a little "WHAT IF?" sort of thing.
and yeah, there's room for Black characters in Batman. Like Crispus Allen and....
uh,...hmmm...
erm...

hmmm..that's more like Egon Spengler from the ghosbusters
I find that really annoying.I think David Tennant has become a very popular choice for the role of The Riddler, because he's gone on record in interviews saying that he wants the part.

That didn't help Glover or Josh Lucas win the role of joker and dent, respectively.
