The Avengers The Robert Downey Jr/Iron Man Thread

Many times, it is the fans of a certain actor that raises the money for the star of their choice.

Actually I remember that now you mention it, and there's someone in particular I'm thinking of (but can't think who) whose fans bought a star for him or her. I don't remember the actor/ actress, but it was either a man or a woman and he knelt down and pressed his/her hands into the clay, if that narrows it down a little.

So, I've been under the impression that RDJ was signed to four movies. So, after IM3 is his contract up? If so, Marvel needs to give him whatever he wants to sign on to appear at least in TA2 and TA3. This ain't Norton as Banner. RDJ makes the Stark role. So, heres to hoping.

I wonder if he's still gonna use the Mark VII armor in IM3.

I guess not, since the armor looked really badly damaged at the end.

I wouldn't be surprised if he stays with the role even after the contract is up. From what I hear he really enjoys the role and as long as they keep it interesting he'll keep doing it.

I don't know if this is the right thread to ask this, but I will shoot away: During the moments when Tony is going through the portal with the nuke, he calls Pepper. The fact that we see her in the jet, not answering the phone, it's kind of baffling to me. What is this suppose to tell us?
Maybe it's Whedon, choosing to turn a cliché upside down, by not showing us a cheap, emotional scene where Tony and Pepper declare their love for each other over the phone.

I don't think there's any deep meaning behind that other than saying that Pepper wasn't paying focus to her phone at that moment.

If anything, it's just a callback to how Steve had his final convo with Peggy before making his own big sacrifice.

It showed how important Pepper is to Tony. As for Pepper missing the call, it happens in real life. I actually felt sad when the phrase "call failed" appeared, because Tony wasn't able to say goodbye to his woman. But yeah, he lived.

I really like the fact that Tony has become loveable again instead of annoying like he was in IM2.

If Tony hadn't solved the icing problem in high altitudes, then if he went through the portal, he could've ended up frozen like Captain America as well while making the ultimate sacrifice.

Now that we're comparing it with Cap, I wonder if a little flashback to him diving into the Atlantic Ocean with the plane could've been cool? Surely it must've brought back memories of his own sacrifice when he saw Tony do that?

Its supposed to build tension during that climactic scene. When Jarvis asks Tony if he should contact Pepper, you can tell in Tony's voice that in his mind, this'll probably be the last time they speak…only they never did.

The whole purpose of that scene with her in the jet not answering her phone as Tony heads upward into the portal is the idea that if Tony dies, he and Pepper never got the opportunity to say goodbye. :csad:

I got that scene from the get-go. Frankly, a little surprised some didn't.

I nearly cried in that scene. Okay, we know he's going to live; they're shooting IM3 already, but watching that scene, especially a sacrifice from someone who'd previously been so arrogant and insensitive, and Tony being my favorite character too, nearly made me weep.
And if Pepper had taken the call, well story-wise that would have been a recycled version of the final scene of CA:TFA, and Iron Man would have stolen some o Cap's thunder.
Again.
For me, their failure to talk one last time just showed the gravity of the situation and how much he cared.

LOL. My friend was watching the movie a 2nd time and he said that a little kid yelled, "NOOOOOO" during the scene where Tony is lies there unmoving after falling... so adorable. I guess he hasn't been keeping track of development news for Iron Man 3.

It's like, even though you knew he'd make it back, what made it work is that you felt that for Tony, he didn't know if he'd make it back and they really sold that emotion.

Has anyone taken note yet that at one point in the movie Cap and Tony are arguing and Cap states that Stark wouldn't ever be one to take a bullet for the team, yet
at the end who gets over his ego and ends up suicide running a nuke into a wormhole to save everyone?
That's some good stuff right there.

They're already shooting IM3?

Yep.

Not yet, they have started before this year is over though.

nice

Oh okay, cool.

It was a powerful scene. I loved how he wanted to hear Pepper's voice because he knew he might not be coming back.

I also think it was cool that Jarvis suggested that he call Pepper. I wonder if he grasps the concept of love... Tony is one hell of a genius, because Jarvis seems to know a lot about a lot. I know he's an A.I. but he really seems like a real person.

 :yay:

Really felt for Tony in that scene and Pepper not picking up the phone was a great touch to make it even more emotional.

:pal: aww that kid! :D I was at the edge of my seat on this and was really hoping that Thor would jump-start him!! That would have been so awesome, but I loved the way they actually woke him up :)

Does anyone notice in the trailer that in some shots Tony Stark is showing the reactor in his chest and in some others he's not??,, I found this really annoying, or was just that the CGI is not finished?, anyway, I thought they'd have fixed this for the trailer... your thoughts...

That bugged me too. It still was like that in the actual movie. Saw it for the second time the other night and I noticed in
scenes after them mourning Coulson's death. The scene where Fury is talking to Cap and Tony at the meeting room. There was no glow from the arc reactor. Then with the scene right after where Tony and Cap are talking in the Hulk prison room area. The arc reactor then was glowing through his shirt. At first I was like (It must be because he has a shirt and a thermal underneath) but yeah it was just inconsistent
It's like WTF?

Mark VII has all the chances to be the best armor Tony Stark has ever created! Well, only if Shane Black & the crew won't come up with something more advanced in Iron Man 3))

People seem to be mentioning the whole Extremis storyline. I barely read the Extremis story this past weekend. It seems too over the top, but it can already work with
how Tony puts on the Mark VII suit on in the Avengers scene with Loki.

Yeah, that's really inconsistent, if you look in IMDB it mentions them in the continuity goofs.

IM is either my 1st or 2nd favorite character in the Avengers. They really gave him an arc. And no, not the self-sacrifice stuff, that's the very least of what they did for him. This movie had him actually interact and connect to different people in different ways. He was likeable and Whedon gave you reasons to root for him. His relationship with Pepper was important and made a powerful impact, although it was shown briefly. Good stuff, hope Shane Black keeps this character development for IM3.

His supportive attitude towards Banner was awesome. As was his relationship with Rogers which started out sort of rocky but improved as time went on and Steve started to take notice of Starks bravery.

The one scene Stark and Banner shared makes me want them to appear in a movie together. If not IM3, then definitely the next Hulk. No Iron Man, just Stark.

Most definitely. Ruffalo and Downeys actual friendship really showed.

Really strengthened the performances from both of them.

They're actual friends? Wow. Great chemistry, great lines, great arcs.
