The Avengers The Robert Downey Jr/Iron Man Thread

Yeah, well, Tony's personality, conflicts, and hero's journey does hold some fascination for some. His suit is cool and all, but so is War Machine's.

I'm taking a subject on mythology at school and we're comparing the hero archetypes of Hector and Achilles (of the Trojan War.) I noticed that Achilles is a lot like Tony. Thoughts?

Can you elaborate on this?

Achilles being arrogant, rash, fearless, disregarding authority, etc., and yet still managing to be the Greek ideal of a hero, a good leader and a well-appreciated character over the years. Plus it states in the Ilias that Achilles was 'invincible.' I still think though that Tony, having NOT been killed off permanently like Achilles, had more room to develop as a character and he has this incredibly noble way of trying to make things right after he's done wrong, and this responsibility for his actions is the Hector part of Iron Man.
Oh and Achilles DID have a lot of women...

This elaborate enough? :)

Interesting comparison. So would that make Steve Rogers his Hector....?

Wasn't Achilles also really, really angry? I don't think we've seen Stark lose his temper.

Yeah that's definately not going to happen, but it would be awesome if Iron Man shot several missiles from all over his body at the same time.
So much for me attempting to change the topic.

Well if I can't get a Gigantic proton canon beam. They can at lease give me a Gigantic Kamehamehaish unibeam.:woot:

Hell yeah, Iron Man's unibeam in A:EMH was pretty huge too so I would love to see a unibeam that size in the film.

Oh hell yeah, that helps renew my hopes of seeing Iron Man unleash a barrage of missiles at some point in the movie.

Actually! You're right. Though Iron Man DOES have a lot of Hector in him too. Bt their conflicts mimic each other. Also, Achilles was responsible for Hector's death, like
Cap dying at the end of Civil War was partly Tony's fault.
Hector's the patriotic type, just like Cap.

I fail to see how. Red Skull wanted Cap dead (Or lost in time. I forget what they kludged together to bring him back to life). Cap was arrested and out in the open, but that could've happened without Tony. Cap getting caught out in the open for whatever reason could've happened easily. Tony certainly had nothing to do with Sharon getting mind controlled.

They actually have Ironman flying and fighting like he's supose to. lol I love the way he faked out that chariot and zipped behind it and shot the driver in the back.

RDJ still is so fun watching as Tony Stark. He will be the reason I still see the Avengers, even though nothing else I've seen looks all that particularly interesting or note worthy. He's hilarious in the new trailer.

Iron Man seems to be getting some great aerial action in this movie.

I love the way Iron Man fights in this film, we've only seen two trailers and Superbowl spot and he already looks like he's a much better fighter than he was in IM and IM2.

i wonder if there will be much said about Caps relationship with Howard Stark and how Tony feels about it

Stark set Cap up. He Jack Ruby-ed him. He should've been providing security detail *himself* for Steve --- it's the least he could do for one of his closest friends and biggest comrades-in-arms. It was inexcusable that Captain Freakin' America wouldn't have had the tightest security detail that SHIELD and superhero-dom could offer him.

Cap was never dead actually. Just like Superman was never truly dead.

Also he was shot by a mind-controlled SHARON CARTER. Tighter security wasn't going to alter that.

I thought it was Crossbones, but my memory's getting foggy.

I've wondered that as well. I feel that at the very least they're going to touch on, even for just a brief moment, the connective tissue that holds all the MCU films together. They almost have to, in a way, at least with the Cap/Tony connection.

I love Iron Man and everything and he's like my favorite character, but WHY is he in the foreground of the poster? It makes him look like the leader. Cap's the leader right? Or is it because the focus has been on Tony more than anyone else because audiences have known him for longer?

I'm surprised that we haven't gotten a gif yet of Tony's walk on top of Stark Tower (when it's just him and not in the armor). That was such a badass look that he was sporting while walking (sans armor).lol
